Cushing's disease is a rare condition that occurs due to an adrenocorticotrophin-producing corticotrophinoma arising from the pituitary gland. The consequent hypercortisolaemia results in multisystem morbidity and mortality. This study aims to report incidence, clinicopathological characteristics, remission outcomes and mortality in a regional pituitary neurosurgical cohort of patients diagnosed with Cushing's disease in Northern Ireland (NI) from 2000 to 2019.

The shoot apical meristem (SAM) gives rise to the aboveground organs of plants. The size of the SAM is relatively constant due to the balance between stem cell replenishment and cell recruitment into new organs. In angiosperms, the transcription factor WUSCHEL (WUS) promotes stem cell proliferation in the central zone of the SAM.

Multidisciplinary Educational Program to Standardize Education and Management of Immune-related Adverse Events: Review and Outcomes of a Single-institution Initiative.

Objectives: The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) as anticancer therapy across a variety of malignancies has led to durable efficacy in a subset of patients. However, associated side effects denoted immune-related adverse events (irAEs) have emerged and can result in substantial morbidity and mortality. Particularly early in the experience of using these agents, a lack of standardized education regarding irAEs among patients and clinical providers may have contributed to poor outcomes.

We are studying the mechanisms of H-reflex operant conditioning, a simple form of learning. Modelling studies in the literature and our previous data suggested that changes in the axon initial segment (AIS) might contribute. To explore this, we used blinded quantitative histological and immunohistochemical methods to study in adult rats the impact of H-reflex conditioning on the AIS of the spinal motoneuron that produces the reflex.

Assessment of Disaster Preparedness at the Household Level in a Pediatric Cardiology Clinic Population.

Natural and human-provoked disasters pose serious health risks to children, particularly children and youth with special healthcare needs, including many cardiology patients. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) provides preparedness recommendations for families, but little is known about recommendation adherence. Caregivers of children seen in a pediatric cardiology clinic network were recruited to complete an electronic survey.

A multimodality assessment of the protective capacity of statin therapy in a mouse model of radiation cardiotoxicity.

Purpose: Despite technological advances in radiotherapy (RT), cardiotoxicity remains a common complication in patients with lung, oesophageal and breast cancers. Statin therapy has been shown to have pleiotropic properties beyond its lipid-lowering effects. Previous murine models have shown statin therapy can reduce short-term functional effects of whole-heart irradiation.

Tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV) is one of the most successful pandemic agricultural pathogens transmitted by several species of thrips in a persistent propagative manner. Current management strategies for TSWV heavily rely on growing single-gene resistant cultivars of tomato ("" gene) and pepper ("" gene) deployed worldwide. However, the emergence of resistance-breaking strains (RB) in recent years has compounded the threat of TSWV to agricultural production worldwide.

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccination as defense against SARS-CoV-2 (BADAS): a randomized controlled trial to protect healthcare workers in the USA by enhanced trained immune responses.

Background: A large epidemic, such as that observed with SARS-CoV-2, seriously challenges available hospital capacity, and this would be augmented by infection of healthcare workers (HCW). Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is a vaccine against tuberculosis, with protective non-specific effects against other respiratory tract infections in vitro and in vivo. Preliminary analyses suggest that regions of the world with existing BCG vaccination programs have lower incidence and mortality from COVID-19.

Seed Transmission of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus and Triticum Mosaic Virus in Differentially Resistant Wheat Cultivars.

Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV) are important viral pathogens of wheat in the Great Plains. These viruses individually or in mixed infections with High Plains wheat mosaic virus cause a devastating wheat streak mosaic (WSM) disease. Although seed transmission of WSMV has been studied, no information is currently available on that of TriMV.

Ethylene-mediated metabolic priming increases photosynthesis and metabolism to enhance plant growth and stress tolerance.

Enhancing crop yields is a major challenge because of an increasing human population, climate change, and reduction in arable land. Here, we demonstrate that long-lasting growth enhancement and increased stress tolerance occur by pretreatment of dark grown seedlings with ethylene before transitioning into light. Plants treated this way had longer primary roots, more and longer lateral roots, and larger aerial tissue and were more tolerant to high temperature, salt, and recovery from hypoxia stress.

The effect of systemic antibiotics on periodontal regeneration: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Objective: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the use of systemic antibiotics in regenerative periodontal surgery for treating teeth affected by periodontitis.

Data Sources: Electronic (MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, Scopus, and Cochrane) and manual literature searches for human randomized controlled trial studies published up to November 2022 were conducted by two reviewers. Meta-analysis was performed to assess probing pocket depth (PPD) reduction and clinical attachment level (CAL) gain in groups receiving systemic antibiotics compared to those not receiving systemic antibiotics.

Wheat is one of the oldest and most widely cultivated staple food crops worldwide. Wheat encounters an array of biotic and abiotic stresses during its growth that significantly impact the crop yield and consequently global food security. Molecular and imaging methods that can be used to detect such stresses are laborious and have numerous limitations.

Inhibition of ATR Reverses a Mitochondrial Respiratory Insufficiency.

Diseases that affect the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) often manifest as threshold effect disorders, meaning patients only become symptomatic once a certain level of ETC dysfunction is reached. Cells can invoke mechanisms to circumvent reaching their critical ETC threshold, but it is an ongoing challenge to identify such processes. In the nematode , severe reduction of mitochondrial ETC activity shortens life, but mild reduction actually extends it, providing an opportunity to identify threshold circumvention mechanisms.

Cerebral Nocardiosis: A Rare Cause of Hemiplegia in the Acute Medicine Unit.

Nocardiosis, a rare infection occurring mostly in immunosuppressed patients can present with neurological complications including cerebral abscess formation, and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We describe the case of a 54-year-old immunocompetent man with cerebral nocardiosis, who presented with sudden onset hemiparesis in an acute medicine unit. He required three craniotomies with excision, following failure to respond to antimicrobial therapy, with subsequent clinical improvement and radiological resolution of multiple cerebral abscesses.

Empirical treatment with parenteral acyclovir in a child with herpes simplex virus hepatitis and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Introduction: Hepatitis secondary to Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infection is a complication that often leads to fatal hepatic failure. Early treatment with the anti-viral drug, acyclovir, is life-saving. In view of the non-specific nature of the signs and symptoms associated with HSV hepatitis, diagnosis is often made late during the course of the disease; a factor that largely contributes to the high mortality rate of this treatable disease complication.

Dumbell atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumour (AT/RT) of the cervical spine.

Spinal Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumour (AT/RT) is a highly malignant tumour, and its prognosis is dismal especially for very young patients. In this article, we present the case of a teenage boy with AT/RT in the cervical spine and its multimodality management. A review of the literature on ATRT of the spine is also presented.

A 'second truncation' in TTN causes early onset recessive muscular dystrophy.

Mutations in the gene encoding the giant skeletal muscle protein titin are associated with a variety of muscle disorders, including recessive congenital myopathies ±cardiomyopathy, limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) and late onset dominant distal myopathy. Heterozygous truncating mutations have also been linked to dilated cardiomyopathy. The phenotypic spectrum of titinopathies is emerging and expanding, as next generation sequencing techniques make this large gene amenable to sequencing.

Epilepsy has many causes and comorbidities affecting as many as 4% of people in their lifetime. Both idiopathic and symptomatic epilepsies are highly heritable, but genetic factors are difficult to characterize among humans due to complex disease etiologies. Rodent genetic studies have been critical to the discovery of seizure susceptibility loci, including mutations identified in both mouse and human cohorts.
