Photon pair sources in the visible to NIR wavelength region play a key role in quantum optics. The wavelength range around 800 nm provides an opportunity for using low cost detectors, which makes it highly interesting for practical, large scale quantum applications. Here, we report on the realization of single mode Rubidium (Rb) exchanged waveguides in periodically poled (PP) Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (Rb:KTiOPO or Rb:KTP) for frequency-non-degenerate type II parametric down-conversion pumped at 400 nm and generating pairs of photons at around 800 nm.

Many technologies in quantum photonics require cryogenic conditions to operate. However, the underlying platform behind active components such as switches, modulators and phase shifters must be compatible with these operating conditions. To address this, we demonstrate an electro-optic polarisation converter for 1550 nm light at 0.

In an attempt to identify novel markers and immunological targets in leukemic stem cells (LSCs) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), we screened bone marrow (BM) samples from patients with AML (n = 274) or CML (n = 97) and controls (n = 288) for expression of cell membrane antigens on CD34+/CD38- and CD34+/CD38+ cells by multicolor flow cytometry. In addition, we established messenger RNA expression profiles in purified sorted CD34+/CD38- and CD34+/CD38+ cells using gene array and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Aberrantly expressed markers were identified in all cohorts.

The atmospheric reaction of OH radicals with dimethyl disulfide, CH3SSCH3, proceeds primarily via OH addition forming CH3S and CH3SOH as reactive intermediates, and to a lesser extent via H-abstraction resulting in the peroxy radical CH3SSCH2OO in the presence of O2. The latter undergoes a fast two-step isomerization process leading to HOOCH2SSCHO. CH3S and CH3SOH are both converted to SO2 and CH3O2 with near unity yields under atmospheric conditions.

Background: It is unknown whether transcatheter valves will have similar durability as surgical bioprosthetic valves. Definitions of structural valve deterioration (SVD), based on valve related reintervention or death, underestimate the incidence of SVD.

Objectives: This study sought to determine and compare the 5-year incidence of SVD, using new standardized definitions based on echocardiographic follow-up of valve function, in intermediate-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis given transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) or surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in the PARTNER (Placement of Aortic Transcatheter Valves) 2A trial and registry.

Article Synopsis
  • Photosynthesis adapts to environmental changes through a process called photosynthetic acclimation, which is sensitive to factors like temperature.
  • The study focused on Arabidopsis thaliana, revealing that a cytosolic fumarase known as FUM2 is crucial for acclimating to low temperatures; mutants lacking FUM2 failed to adapt their photosynthetic system.
  • Gas exchange measurements and metabolite assays demonstrated that acclimation led to altered carbon distribution in plants, and proteomic analysis indicated that significant changes in protein composition due to cold exposure were hindered in the fum2 mutant.

In a bearing state, touching spheres (disks in two dimensions) roll on each other without slip. Here we frustrate a system of touching spheres by imposing two different bearing states on opposite sides and search for the configurations of lowest energy dissipation. If the dissipation between contacts of spheres is viscous (with random damping constants), the angular momentum continuously changes from one bearing state to the other.

Background: The effect of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) on kidney function stage in patients with aortic stenosis remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that in some patients, TAVR results in improved kidney function by alleviating cardiorenal syndrome.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess change in chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage following TAVR, identify variables associated with pre- and post-TAVR estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and assess association of post-TAVR eGFR with mortality.

Background: For patients presenting with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction, national quality initiatives monitor hospitals' proportion of cases with door-to-balloon (D2B) time under 90 minutes. Hospitals are allowed to exclude patients from reporting and may modify behavior to improve performance. We sought to identify whether there is a discontinuity in the number of cases included in the D2B time metric at 90 minutes and whether operators were increasingly likely to pursue femoral access in patients with less time to meet the 90-minute quality metric.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the microbial composition of early (after 3 days, D3) and mature biofilms (after 31 days, D31) on materials typically used in implant/abutment buildups. Implant/abutment materials with different surface roughness values (R ) were compared to detect differences in the quantity and quality of bacterial composition.

Material And Methods: Four different materials were investigated: rough implant surface (sand-blasted acid-etched titanium, Ti-p), implant collar (machined titanium, Ti-m), titanium abutment (Ti6Al4V), and zirconium dioxide abutment (ZrO ).

Measuring gamma rays emitted from nuclear reactions gives insight into their nuclear structure. Notably, there are several nuclear reactions that produce gamma rays at ∼1 MeV-3 MeV energies such as T(He, γ)Li, He(He, γ)Be, and C(p, γ)N, which may solve questions lingering about big-bang nucleosynthesis and stellar nucleosynthesis. To observe 1 MeV-3 MeV gamma rays in an inertial confinement fusion system, a new style of the Cherenkov detector was developed using aerogel and fused silica as a Cherenkov medium.

Using additive manufacturing to generate a polymer-metal structure offers the potential to achieve a complex customized polymer structure joined to a metal base of high stiffness and strength. A tool to evaluate the generated interface during the process is of fundamental interest, as the sequential deposition of the polymer as well as temperature gradients within the substrate lead to local variations in adhesion depending on the local processing conditions. On preheated aluminum substrates, 0.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic is straining healthcare systems worldwide, leading to the use of epidemiological models for effective policy-making.
  • Many existing models overlook differences in individual interactions and assume random diffusion, despite the human interaction network being scale-free.
  • By utilizing these interaction networks, the study shows that targeting influential individuals (hubs) is a more effective mitigation strategy compared to randomly reducing connections, highlighting the potential of network science in improving COVID-19 predictions.

The capsid of human papillomavirus (HPV) consists of two capsid proteins - the major capsid protein L1 and the minor capsid protein L2. Assembled virus-like particles, which only consist of L1 proteins, are successfully applied as prophylactic vaccines against HPV infections. The capsid subunits are L1-pentamers, which are also reported to protect efficiently against HPV infections in animals.

Background: Although aortic valve replacement is associated with a major benefit in high-gradient (HG) severe aortic stenosis (AS), the results in low-gradient (LG, mean gradient <40 mm Hg) AS are conflicting. LG severe AS may be subdivided in classical low-flow (left ventricular ejection fraction <50%) and LG (CLF-LG); paradoxical low-flow (left ventricular ejection fraction ≥50% but stroke volume index <35 mL/m) and LG; and normal-flow (left ventricular ejection fraction ≥50% and stroke volume index ≥35 mL/m) and LG. The primary objective is to determine in the PARTNER 2 trial (The Placement of Aortic Transcatheter Valves) and registry the outcomes after aortic valve replacement of the 4 flow-gradient groups.

Despite new insights in molecular features of leukemic cells and the availability of novel treatment approaches and drugs, acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains a major clinical challenge. In fact, many patients with AML relapse after standard therapy and eventually die from progressive disease. The basic concept of leukemic stem cells (LSC) has been coined with the goal to decipher clonal architectures in various leukemia-models and to develop curative drug therapies by eliminating LSC.

The carnivorous Venus flytrap catches prey by an ingenious snapping mechanism. Based on work over nearly 200 years, it has become generally accepted that two touches of the trap's sensory hairs within 30 s, each one generating an action potential, are required to trigger closure of the trap. We developed an electromechanical model, which, however, suggests that under certain circumstances one touch is sufficient to generate two action potentials.
