Purpose: A pronounced loss of function of the lower limb of various origins, especially with an infection-related course, may require a minor (MIN) or major (MAJ) amputation of the lower limb. Our aim was to contrast the underlying etiology, including previous trauma, surgical procedure, and the subsequent function.
Methods: Between 2012 and 2022, 366 lower limb amputations were considered.
The non-invasive assessment of disease severity remains pivotal in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) as it has wide implications in predicting liver-related complications or death. Shear-wave elastography (SWE) is an emerging ultrasound-based method to non-invasively measure liver stiffness. The aim of our study was to evaluate two-dimensional (2D) and point (p) SWE to predict the presence of esophageal varices (EV) or clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH).

Purpose: Bloodstream infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PABSI) in hematological patients are associated with high morbidity and mortality. We investigated the epidemiology, risk factors, and outcomes of PABSI at our center.
Methods: All adult hematological patients with PABSI between January 2013 and July 2023 were included.
Introduction: Patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) often show disturbed bone metabolism, assessed using three-phase bone scintigraphy (TPBS). However, current methods lack automation and standardisation. Bone serum markers have been proposed as biomarkers, but their utility is unclear.

This study aimed to investigate the correlation between unsupervised daily physical activity and changes in daily pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) in patients with stable NYHA class III heart failure (HF) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of 45% or higher.
Methods: Daily physical activity was monitored over a 3-month period using a Holter-ECG with an accelerometer that calculated an activity-associated, heart rate-derived metabolic equivalent of task (MET) score.
To establish dual-energy-derived iodine density reference values in abdominopelvic organs in a large cohort of healthy subjects. : 597 patients who underwent portal venous phase dual-energy CT scans of the abdomen were retrospectively enrolled. Iodine distribution maps were reconstructed, and regions of interest measurements were placed in abdominal and pelvic structures to obtain absolute iodine values.

This combination may have an impact on in-hospital falls and mortality. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with the risk of falls and to analyze the consequences regarding in-hospital mortality.

In the current study, chimpanzees needed to recruit a conspecific partner for either a cooperative or competitive experimental task.

Unfortunately, large animal models using full blood draw and replenishment with balanced electrolyte solution (BES) lead to bleeding complications, as coagulation factors and platelets are also drawn. We therefore aimed to establish a model of selective red blood cell (RBC) depletion to the main endpoint of hemoglobin (Hgb) levels of 4-6 g dL using apheresis in sheep.

We aimed to compare the sex-specific differences in outcomes and objectify them using validated specific scores.
Methods: Between 2010 and 2021, 221 patients underwent ankle arthrodesis at our institution, including 143 men (MAA) and 78 women (FAA).
Background: Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) can quantify tissue biomechanics noninvasively, including pathological hepatic states like metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis.
Purpose: To compare the performance of 2D/3D-MRE using the gravitational (GT) transducer concept with the current commercial acoustic (AC) solution utilizing a 2D-MRE approach. Additionally, quality index markers (QIs) were proposed to identify image pixels with sufficient quality for reliably estimating tissue biomechanics.
We compute the potential-photon contributions to the classical relativistic scattering angle of two charged nonspinning bodies in electrodynamics through fifth order in the coupling. We use the scattering amplitudes framework, effective field theory, and multiloop integration techniques based on integration by parts and differential equations. At fifth order, the result is expressed in terms of cyclotomic polylogarithms.

A comprehensive quantitative biophysical understanding of intracellular virus replication mechanisms could aid in preparing for future virus pandemics. By elucidating the relationship between the form and function of intracellular structures from the host cell and viral components, it is possible to identify possible targets for direct antiviral agents and potent vaccines.

This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-based pre- and postoperative specialized HF management in reducing postoperative HF-associated complications in patients with known HF undergoing noncardiac surgery.
Methods: This prospective, randomized pilot study included patients with established HF requiring intermediate- to high-risk noncardiac surgery.
Ultrasound (US) has gained popularity as a guidance modality for percutaneous needle insertions because it is widely available and non-ionizing. However, coordinating scanning and needle insertion still requires significant experience. Current assistance solutions utilize optical or electromagnetic tracking (EMT) technology directly integrated into the US device or probe.

Here we examined whether tumour-specific enhancement of vascular permeability by the particular tumour homing peptide, iRGD, which carries dual function of binding to integrin receptors overexpressed in the tumour vasculature and is known to promote extravasation via neuropilin-1 receptor upon site-specific cleavage, might be useful to improve blood-based tumour detection by inducing a yet unrecognised vice versa tumour-to-blood transport.
Methods: To detect an iRGD-induced tumour-to-blood transport, we examined the effect of intravenously injected iRGD on blood levels of α-fetoprotein (AFP) and autotaxin in several mouse models of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or in mice with chronic liver injury without HCC, and on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in mice with prostate cancer.
Differences in the tool use of non-human primates and humans are subject of ongoing debate. In humans, representations of object functions underpin efficient tool use. Yet, representations of object functions can lead to functional fixedness, which describes the fixation on a familiar tool function leading to less efficient problem solving when the problem requires using the tool for a new function.

To effectively utilize THz radiation, modulators with precise control are imperative. While most recent THz modulators manipulate the amplitude, frequency, or phase of incident THz radiation, considerably less progress has been made toward THz polarization modulation.
