Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is an opportunistic viral infection primarily affecting immunocompromised patients. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease have an increased risk for developing CMV infections of the gastrointestinal tract. While receiving continuous infusion of 5-fluorouracil and interferon-alpha, a 72-year-old woman with stage IV pancreatic carcinoma developed severe colitis with diarrhea that was refractory to conventional antidiarrheals.

Whole cell currents were measured in HSG-PA cells (a proposed model for salivary gland duct cells) after muscarinic receptor activation or exposure to known signaling agents. Exposure to carbachol or oxotremorine M produced large and often oscillatory increases in outward current whose reversal potentials indicated a K current. The current was sensitive to extracellular atropine, charybdotoxin, and quinine, but not apamin, and to 1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid in the pipette.

In many developing countries, the immunogenicity of three doses of live, attenuated, oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) is lower than that in industrialised countries. We evaluated serum neutralising antibody responses in 368 children aged 6 months and 346 children aged 9 months in Côte d'Ivoire who had previously received three doses of OPV at 2, 3, and 4 months of age, and who were then randomised to receive a supplemental dose of OPV or enhanced-potency inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) at the time of measles vaccination. Although both vaccines increased seroconversion to all three poliovirus types, antibody responses were greater in the IPV group.

We are reporting on a nosocomial outbreak of 213 cases of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus infection involving 2,812 enterococcal isolates from patients over a period of 36 months. In 1990, the Enterococcus faecium vancomycin susceptibility rate was found to be 85.7% (36 of 42 cases), and an incidence of 10.

1. Low voltage-activated (LVA) Ca2+ current in clonal (GH3) pituitary cells was studied with the use of the whole-cell recording technique. The use of internal fluoride to facilitate the rundown of high voltage-activated (HVA) Ca2+ current allowed the study of LVA current in virtual isolation.

The effect of halothane on the physiological response to excitatory stimuli was assessed in clonal (GH3) pituitary cells. Halothane, at concentrations used to produce general anesthesia in animals (0.25-0.

The effect of halothane on isolated calcium (Ca2+) current of clonal (GH3) pituitary cells was investigated using standard whole-cell clamp techniques at room temperature. Halothane (0.1-5.

By the early part of this century, members of the Southern Surgical Association as well as others began to realize that gastroenterostomy alone was unacceptable for the treatment of gastric ulcer. Ulcer excision and some type of limited resection was advised. At a later date, gastric resection of varying extent, depending on ulcer size and location, became the appropriate treatment for complications of this disease.

Using Electron Spin Resonance spectroscopy at low temperatures, we find that thiyl radicals resulting from irradiation of frozen aqueous solutions of a variety of thiols, including cysteine, glutathione, and penicillamine react with oxygen to form sulfinyl (RSO.) radicals. The identity of the cysteine sulfinyl radical has been confirmed by the use of molecular oxygen isotopically labeled with 17O.

From January 1973 through December 1979, 131 patients underwent proximal gastric vagotomy (PGV) for duodenal ulcer. There were 78 men and 53 women, whose age ranged from 19 to 73 years, with a mean age of 45 years. One hospital death occurred as a result of pulmonary embolism (0.

Gastroduodenostomy (Billroth I) is our reconstruction of choice following gastric resection for gastroduodenal ulcer. Dissatisfaction with a Billroth II anastomosis has led us in recent years to employ a Roux-en-Y diversion in selected cases, particularly those in which the pathologic state of the pyloroduodenal canal would render a Billroth I anastomosis unsafe. During the past 7 years, truncal vagotomy-antrectomy and Roux-en-Y (VARY) has been carried out in 50 selected patients: duodenal ulcer (DU) 13 patients, gastric ulcer (GU) 11 patients, and stomal ulcer (SU) 26 patients.

Peritoneal fluid was examined for the presence of tumor cells in 94 patients with ovarian cancer. The findings were correlated with the type, grade, and stage of the tumor. Fluids that were positive for malignant cells were associated with serous and endometrioid carcinomas more often than with carcinomas of other types.

Dysphagia and chest pain are well-described symptoms in subjects with achalasia, diffuse esophageal spasm (DES), and high-amplitude peristaltic contractions, a subset of nonspecific motor disorders (NEMD). We observed a high incidence of chest pain and dysphagia in a different NEMD subgroup characterized by prolonged peristaltic contractile duration (PPCD) and normal contractile amplitude. We compared the manometric characteristics of patients with PPCD to healthy controls and compared the clinical profile of PPCD patients to that of patients with achalasia, DES, and high-amplitude peristalsis.

Perioperative parenteral cefoxitin was compared with oral erythromycin, neomycin and parenteral cefazolin in a prospective, double-blind, randomized evaluation of 119 patients undergoing colorectal operations. Patients receiving cefoxitin had a higher wound infection rate than patients receiving erythromycin-neomycin-cefazolin (12.5% v 3.

Recent literature has called attention to an esophageal motor abnormality characterized by high amplitude peristaltic contractions (HAPC). We characterized symptoms, manometric characteristics, and radiographic findings of 19 such patients and compared them to patients with other nonspecific esophageal motor disorders (NEMD). In the HAPC group, mean amplitude was 254 +/- 14 mm Hg, which was significantly higher than that of control subjects (94 +/- 8.
