Surface functionalization of the solid heteropolyacid H3PW12O40 with a bulky PEG-containing quaternary ammonium cation through partial proton exchange leads to a polyoxometalate-based liquid salt with high-temperature proton conductivity ( approximately 10-3 S cm-1 at 140 degrees C) under dry conditions. The proton conductivity of the liquid salt is 4 orders of magnitude higher than that of the solid analogue under identical conditions and shows super ionic behavior as defined by Walden plot.

Genetic polymorphisms at 13 STR loci in autochthonous Basques from the province of Alava (Spain).

In this study, allelic frequencies of the CODIS core short tandem repeat (STR) loci were estimated in a population sample consisting in 101 unrelated healthy autochthonous individuals from the Basque province of Alava (Northern Spain). Frequency distributions for all 13 STR loci were obtained using the AmpFlSTR Profiler Plus and AmpFlSTR COfiler amplification kits. The allelic frequencies generated were employed to calculate genetic and forensic useful parameters.

Synthesis of alpha-hydrazino ketones via regio- and stereoselective electrophilic amination of manganese enolates and enamines.

A straightforward procedure for the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of alpha-hydrazino ketones is described. Manganese enolates and manganese enamines derived from ketones and from the corresponding N-sulfinylimines react with azodicarboxylate esters (DTBAD and DEAD) in a regioselective fashion to afford in good to excellent yields the kinetic alpha-hydrazino ketones as sole or highly prevalent products. When enantiopure N-sulfinyl manganese enamines were used the stereoselectivity of these reactions ranged from 40% to 68% ee.

Purpose: This multicenter, open-label, phase II study was undertaken to assess the antitumor activity and safety of the oral mitogen-activated extracellular signal regulated kinase kinase (MEK) inhibitor, CI-1040, in breast cancer, colon cancer, non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and pancreatic cancer.

Patients And Methods: Patients with advanced colorectal, NSCLC, breast, or pancreatic cancer received oral CI-1040 continuously at 800 mg bid. All patients had measurable disease at baseline, a performance status of 2 or less, and adequate bone marrow, liver, and renal function.

The kidney transplant experience at Hospital de Especialidades, Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente, IMSS, Guadalajara México.

A total of 1,356 kidney transplants has been performed in the Hospital de Especialidades del Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente, IMSS, in Guadalajara Mexico, including 935 in the past 8 years. This represents an important increase of this activity in our country. Of the total transplants, 1,218 (90%) were from living donors and only 138 (10%) were from cadaveric donors, a number that we hope to increase.

D1S80 single-locus discrimination among African populations.

The highly polymorphic D1S80 locus has no known genetic function. However, this variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) locus has been highly valuable in forensic identification. In this study we report the allele and genotype frequencies of five African populations (Benin, Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, and Rwanda), which can be used as databases to help characterize populations and identify individuals.

Variants of U1 small nuclear RNA assemble into spliceosomal complexes.

In this study, the existence of additional U1 snRNA variants in the posterior silk gland of the Bombyx mori Nistari strain from India was investigated. Three new U1 variants were detected. One of the new isoforms (U1 SG1) was found to be preferentially assembled into high molecular weight spliceosomal complexes in comparison with the total cellular lysate RNA control.

Diels-Alder reactions of masked o-benzoquinones: new experimental findings and a theoretical study of the inverse electron demand case.

Diels-Alder reactions of the masked o-benzoquinone (MOB) 2 with vinylene carbonate (3), the bicyclic derivatives 4, 5, and 6, and the intramolecular version of the 2-hydroxymethylfuran-MOB Diels-Alder reaction are described. In addition, a theoretical study of the Diels-Alder reactions of MOBs with enol and thioenol ethers is presented.

Sequence variability in the fibroin-H intron of domesticated and wild silk moths.

The single intron of the heavy-chain fibroin gene in domesticated (Bombyx mori) and wild (B. mandarina) silk moths has a length of approximately 1000 nucleotides. It is located only 57 bp from the gene's core promoter and harbors multiple AT-rich regulatory elements that have been found to enhance the basal level of transcription in vitro.

Measurement of the electric form factor of the neutron at Q2=0.5 and 1.0 GeV2/c2.

The electric form factor of the neutron was determined from measurements of the d-->(e-->,e'n)p reaction for quasielastic kinematics. Polarized electrons were scattered off a polarized deuterated ammonia (15ND3) target in which the deuteron polarization was perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The scattered electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons in a large solid angle detector.

The Levant versus the Horn of Africa: evidence for bidirectional corridors of human migrations.

Paleoanthropological evidence indicates that both the Levantine corridor and the Horn of Africa served, repeatedly, as migratory corridors between Africa and Eurasia. We have begun investigating the roles of these passageways in bidirectional migrations of anatomically modern humans, by analyzing 45 informative biallelic markers as well as 10 microsatellite loci on the nonrecombining region of the Y chromosome (NRY) in 121 and 147 extant males from Oman and northern Egypt, respectively. The present study uncovers three important points concerning these demic movements: (1) The E3b1-M78 and E3b3-M123 lineages, as well as the R1*-M173 lineages, mark gene flow between Egypt and the Levant during the Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic.

Smallpox and pan-orthopox virus detection by real-time 3'-minor groove binder TaqMan assays on the roche LightCycler and the Cepheid smart Cycler platforms.

We designed, optimized, and extensively tested several sensitive and specific real-time PCR assays for rapid detection of both smallpox and pan-orthopox virus DNAs. The assays are based on TaqMan 3'-minor groove binder chemistry and were performed on both the rapid-cycling Roche LightCycler and the Cepheid Smart Cycler platforms. The hemagglutinin (HA) J7R, B9R, and B10R genes were used as targets for the variola virus-specific assays, and the HA and DNA polymerase-E9L genes were used as targets for the pan-orthopox virus assays.

The effective mutation rate at Y chromosome short tandem repeats, with application to human population-divergence time.

We estimate an effective mutation rate at an average Y chromosome short-tandem repeat locus as 6.9x10-4 per 25 years, with a standard deviation across loci of 5.7x10-4, using data on microsatellite variation within Y chromosome haplogroups defined by unique-event polymorphisms in populations with documented short-term histories, as well as comparative data on worldwide populations at both the Y chromosome and various autosomal loci.

The dynamic mobility of histone H1 is regulated by cyclin/CDK phosphorylation.

The linker histone H1 is involved in maintaining higher-order chromatin structures and displays dynamic nuclear mobility, which may be regulated by posttranslational modifications. To analyze the effect of H1 tail phosphorylation on the modulation of the histone's nuclear dynamics, we generated a mutant histone H1, referred to as M1-5, in which the five cyclin-dependent kinase phosphorylation consensus sites were mutated from serine or threonine residues into alanines. Cyclin E/CDK2 or cyclin A/CDK2 cannot phosphorylate the mutant in vitro.

Two problematic human polymorphic Alu insertions.

Analysis of two previously described polymorphic Alu insertions (Sb19.3 and NBC3) in world-wide human populations generated genotypic frequencies grossly in violation of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium expectations. GenBank searches at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and sequencing analyses revealed that samples homozygous for the Sb19.

Inferring recent human phylogenies using forensic STR technology.

STR loci are characterized by extremely high mutation rates and thus, high levels of length polymorphism both within and among populations. In addition, much of the observed variation is believed to be nearly selectively neutral. Because of these features, STRs are ideal markers for genetic mapping, intra-species phylogenetic reconstructions and forensic analysis.

[The prothrombotic state in early stages of chronic chagas' disease].

Objective: This study was designed to explore the presence of a prothrombotic state in the early stages of chronic Chagas' disease by evaluating serum markers of thrombosis and fibrinolysis.

Patients And Method: Forty-two patients with chronic Chagas' disease (12 men and 30 women, 32.5 6.
