Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation is used to study the adsorption of nitrogen at 77 K and ammonia at 240 K to represent weakly polar and polar molecules, respectively, on infinite and finite graphite surfaces. These graphite surfaces were modeled with different percentages of carbons removed (defects) from the top graphite layer. Increasing the number of defects increases the adsorption and the isosteric heat of nitrogen at low pressure.

The monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) HD37 and RFB4 bind to receptors on precursor B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells. These MAbs were tested alone and in combination with chemotherapy for their anti-leukemic activity. Elite suppressors maintain normal CD4(+) T cell counts and viral loads of <50 copies of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) RNA per milliliter of plasma without antiviral therapy. We report here a case of virologic escape in a human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B*57-positive patient shortly after seroconversion. This escape was associated with the development of mutations in 2 HLA-B*57-restricted CD8(+) T cell Gag epitopes, reversion of the drug-resistance mutation M184V, and reversion of a novel polymorphism in Vpu.

Feasibility of elemental sulfur reduction by Desulfovibrio desulfuricans in anaerobic conditions in a stirred reactor was studied. The anti-CD19 immunotoxin (IT) (HD37-dgRTA) is effective in killing B-lineage leukemia cells and in curing severe combined immunodeficient mice with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The present study aimed to identify effective combinations of HD37-dgRTA and chemotherapeutic agents. Albendazole (ABZ), a benzimidazole carbamate used for the treatment of several human helminthiases has high affinity for tubulin, which results in an inhibition of microtubule polymerization, blocking several vital processes in the parasites, such as motility and nutrient uptake. This study examined if a series of epidermal growth factor (EGF) local infiltrations can enhance the healing process of complicated diabetic wounds. Twenty-nine in-hospital patients with diabetic neuropathic or ischaemic lesions with high risk of amputation were treated in a non controlled pilot study conducted at the National Institute of Angiology, Havana. Lesions, classified as Wagner's grade 3 or 4, included ulcers > or = 20 cm2 for > or = 25 days or amputation residual bases > or = 30 cm2 for > or = 15 days, healing refractory despite comprehensive wound care.
