Objectives: Pregnancies affected by opioid use disorder (OUD) face difficulties with postpartum pain control. This study aims to determine if prenatal anesthesia consultation for patients on medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) affects maternal postpartum pain control.
Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of pregnant patients diagnosed on MOUD who received prenatal care and delivered at a single academic institution between January 2017 and July 2023.
Objective: There has been limited research on the influence of race and ethnicity on treatment decision-making for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). This prospective study aims to investigate potential factors linked to treatment modality choice among patients with medically refractory CRS, distinguishing between Chinese American and non-Chinese American patients.
Methods: CRS patients with persistent symptoms despite prior medical treatment were prospectively enrolled.
Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) is widely used to preserve fresh fruits. In the case of exporting products in bulk formats (2-5 kg), perforated MAP can help extend shelf life if appropriately configured to reach suitable gas levels. This study evaluated the configuration of a perforated MAP system for purple passion (Passiflora edulis Sims) fruits based on modeling and simulation of changes in gas levels within the package headspace and experimental data on the respiration and transpiration of the fruits.

Study Design: Retrospective, cross-sectional survey.
Methods: A survey was distributed to individuals who received a tracheostomy at a tertiary care center in the last five years as well as in Facebook support groups for tracheostomy and head and neck cancer patients.
Unlabelled: Telemedicine has grown during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gastroenterology at Clínica Universidad de los Andes has continued it post-pandemic. Usability is the measure by which users evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in telemedicine.

We have previously used super-resolution light microscopy and platinum replica electron microscopy to elucidate the ultrastructural organization of the CR in first division sea urchin embryos. To date, our studies indicate that the CR initiates as an equatorial band of clusters containing myosin II, actin, septin and anillin, which then congress over time into patches which coalesce into a linear array characteristic of mature CRs.

Umbilical cord-derived MSCs from Wharton jelly (WJ) offer advantages such as low immunogenicity and potent immune modulatory effects. However, ensuring consistent quality and safety throughout their manufacturing process remains critical.

Background: Outside of randomized controlled trials, there are limited data regarding the acceptability of injectable long-acting cabotegravir + rilpivirine (LA-CAB+RPV) among persons living with HIV. To evaluate acceptability, we described participant-reported outcomes of LA-CAB+RPV among a population underrepresented in randomized controlled trials.

Introduction: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease characterized by periods of inflammatory activity and remission, which vary from the rectum to the proximal colon. Currently, mucosal healing is a long-term goal in the management of inflammatory bowel disease, with colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy being the recommended tools for evaluation.
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of both examinations in determining the presence of inflammatory activity in the follow-up of patients with UC.
Background: Bioresorbable nasal packing is associated with a decreased incidence of adhesions and bleeding postoperatively after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). However, discomfort during postoperative debridement is still a major area of concern for patients. Our objective was to compare the efficacy of a peptide hydrogel to that of a chitosan-based polymer in reducing pain during debridement after ESS.

Since the introduction of vaccines for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in the United States, there has been significant vaccine hesitancy, in part due to fear of adverse effects. We sought to investigate the rates of smell and taste changes after COVID-19 vaccination compared to other common vaccines. Our study cohort included individuals identified by Current Procedural Terminology code in the TriNetX database receiving the COVID-19 first series, COVID-19 booster, influenza, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (TDAP), or pneumococcal vaccines between December 15, 2020, and August 15, 2023.

Limited data exist about VTE in patients with adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). The primary objective of this study was to identify the prevalence of VTE in a cohort of patients with ACC.

Objectives: To investigate whether hormone replacement therapy (HRT) impacts health care resource utilization in the management of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in older women.
Methods: Using the TriNetX US health record database, women 55 years or older with a diagnosis of CRS were included and followed for 3 years. The cohort was stratified into two groups: women who received HRT at the beginning of the study were compared to women who did not receive HRT.
Introduction: In Chile, more than 70% of adults are infected by Helicobacter pylori. Clarithromycin should not be used in any regimen if there is >15% resistance to this antibiotic, being greater than 26% in our population. In this scenario, the effectiveness of triple therapy (proton pump inhibitor [PPI], clarithromycin, amoxicillin) was only 63.

Curcumin, a bioactive polyphenolic substance, may help ameliorate inflammation-related conditions including osteoarthritis and pain.
Methods: We conducted a multisite randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind pilot trial (Alliance A22_Pilot9) to evaluate the effects of nanoemulsion curcumin (NEC, 200 mg/day) in postmenopausal women experiencing AIIA for ≥ 3 months.
HIV is associated with severe mpox. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) could facilitate mpox transmission. We estimated HIV and STI frequency among patients with mpox and compared characteristics associated with mpox severity.

Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated an association between maternal obesity and intellectual disability/cognitive deficits like autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in offspring. Experimental findings have consistently been indicating that maternal supplementation with methyl donors, attenuated the social alterations and repetitive behavior in offspring.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFExpression of multiple hemoglobin isoforms with differing physiochemical properties likely helps species adapt to different environmental and physiological conditions. Antarctic notothenioid fishes inhabit the icy Southern Ocean and display fewer hemoglobin isoforms, each with less affinity for oxygen than temperate relatives. Reduced hemoglobin multiplicity was proposed to result from relaxed selective pressure in the cold, thermally stable, and highly oxygenated Antarctic waters.
