In a previous work, we defined a novel HIV-1 fusion inhibitor peptide (E1P47) with a broad spectrum of activity against viruses from different clades, subtypes, and tropisms. With the aim to enhance its efficacy, in the present work we address the design and synthesis of several peptide amphiphiles (PAs) based on the E1P47 peptide sequence to target the lipid rafts of the cell membrane where the cell-cell fusion process takes place. We report the synthesis of novel PAs having a hydrophobic moiety covalently attached to the peptide sequence through a hydrophilic spacer of polyethylene glycol.

Low-Rank Plus Sparse Decomposition of Covariance Matrices Using Neural Network Parametrization.

This article revisits the problem of decomposing a positive semidefinite matrix as a sum of a matrix with a given rank plus a sparse matrix. An immediate application can be found in portfolio optimization, when the matrix to be decomposed is the covariance between the different assets in the portfolio. Our approach consists in representing the low-rank part of the solution as the product MM , where M is a rectangular matrix of appropriate size, parametrized by the coefficients of a deep neural network.

Engineering for the Production of Xylonic Acid from Sugarcane Bagasse Hydrolysate.

Sugarcane bagasse is an agricultural residue rich in xylose, which may be used as a feedstock for the production of high-value-added chemicals, such as xylonic acid, an organic acid listed as one of the top 30 value-added chemicals on a NREL report. Here, was engineered for the first time to produce xylonic acid from sugarcane bagasse hydrolysate. Seven coding genes for xylose dehydrogenase (XDH) were tested.

Background: The study of genetic mutations in thyroid nodules makes it possible to improve the preoperative diagnosis of and reduce unnecessary surgeries on benign nodules. In this study, we analysed the impact of implementing a 7-gene mutation panel that enables mutations to be detected in BRAF and RAS (H/N/K) and the gene fusions PAX8/PPARG, RET/PTC1 and RET/PTC2, in a population in northern Argentina.

Objective: In Belize, the main vector for Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease, is Triatoma dimidiata, but transmission cycles and the risk for human infection are unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify T. dimidiata blood feeding sources and its parasite and microbial diversity, in order to reconstruct T.

The microbial community from the early-plant colonizer (Baccharis linearis) is required for plant establishment on copper mine tailings.

Plants must deal with harsh environmental conditions when colonizing abandoned copper mine tailings. We hypothesized that the presence of a native microbial community can improve the colonization of the pioneer plant, Baccharis linearis, in soils from copper mining tailings. Plant growth and microbial community compositions and dynamics were determined in cultivation pots containing material from two abandoned copper mining tailings (Huana and Tambillos) and compared with pots containing fresh tailings or surrounding agricultural soil.

Background: To characterize their potential use in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) we compared the pharmacokinetics of raltegravir and lamivudine in genital tissue against ex vivo tissue infection with HIV-1.

Methods: Open-label trial of 36 HIV-negative females and males randomized to 7 days raltegravir 400 mg twice daily and 7 days raltegravir 400 mg+lamivudine 150 mg twice daily (after washout), or vice versa. Blood, saliva, rectal fluid, rectal tissue, vaginal fluid and vaginal tissue were sampled at baseline and on and off PrEP during a total of 12 days, for pharmacokinetics and antiviral activity via ex vivo HIV-1BaL challenge.

Toceranib phosphate-associated nephrotic syndrome in a dog: a case report.

Background: Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is rare in dogs and is characterized by concurrent clinical findings of proteinuria, hyperlipidemia, hypoalbuminemia, and edema. NS has been reported in humans receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) and in dogs receiving masitinib. This is the first report of NS in a dog receiving toceranib phosphate.

Shelter cats host infections with multiple Trypanosoma cruzi discrete typing units in southern Louisiana.

Trypanosoma cruzi is a zoonotic parasite endemic in the southern US and the Americas, which may frequently infect dogs, but limited information is available about infections in cats. We surveyed a convenience sample of 284 shelter cats from Southern Louisiana to evaluate T. cruzi infection using serological and PCR tests.

Prevalence and risk factors for vitamin D deficiency in long-term childhood cancer survivors.

Background: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) have increased risk of developing chronic health conditions, including musculoskeletal disorders. Little is known regarding vitamin D deficiency (VDD, <20 ng/ml) and its association with bone mineral density (BMD) in long-term CCS. We evaluated the prevalence and risk factors for VDD in a large, diverse population of long-term CCS, and examined the association between VDD and BMD in patients who underwent guideline-recommended dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) screening.
