Introduction: Exit-site infections (ESI) of central venous catheters for hemodialysis (CVC-HD) has been associated with early catheter removal and an increased risk of CVC-HD related bacteremia. No specific clinical scales to predict ESI have previously been validated.

Methods: A multicenter prospective cohort study was performed to validate the proposed scale, which is based on the following 5 signs and symptoms: (i) pain at exit site during interdialytic period; (ii) hyperemia or erythema ≥2 cm from exit site; (iii) inflammation, induration, or swelling at exit site; (iv) fever ≥38 °C not attributable to other causes, and (v) obvious abscess or purulent exudate at the exit site.

We tested the idea that functional trade-offs that underlie species tolerance to drought-driven shifts in community composition via their effects on demographic processes and subsequently on shifts in species' abundance. Using data from 298 tree species from tropical dry forests during the extreme ENSO-2015, we scaled-up the effects of trait trade-offs from individuals to communities. Conservative wood and leaf traits favoured slow tree growth, increased tree survival and positively impacted species abundance and dominance at the community-level.

An F-scan nonlinear spectrometer is used to measure the two-photon absorption coefficient for CHNHPbBr perovskite films from 690 to 995 nm. This spectrometer uses an electrically focused tunable lens and a tunable femtosecond-pulse laser (Mai Tai-HP) with a resolution of 5 nm. Tropical forests disappear rapidly because of deforestation, yet they have the potential to regrow naturally on abandoned lands. We analyze how 12 forest attributes recover during secondary succession and how their recovery is interrelated using 77 sites across the tropics. Tropical forests are highly resilient to low-intensity land use; after 20 years, forest attributes attain 78% (33 to 100%) of their old-growth values.

The use of wave-based locomotion mechanisms is already well established in the field of robotics, using either standing waves (SW) or traveling waves (TW). The motivation of this work was to compare both the SW- and the TW-based motion of a 20-mm long sub-gram glass plate, with attached 3D printed legs, and piezoelectric patches for the actuation. This paper reports the design, fabrication and performance of MEMS-based piezoelectric bidirectional conveyors featuring 3D printed legs, driven by linear travelling waves (TW). The structures consisted of an aluminium-nitride (AlN) piezoelectric film on top of millimetre-sized rectangular thin silicon bridges and two electrode patches. The position and size of the patches were analytically optimised for TW generation in three frequency ranges: 19, 112 and 420 kHz, by the proper combination of two contiguous flexural modes.

In this article, we show nanosecond switchable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) dipole and quadrupole modes from silver (Ag) nanoparticles on fused quartz substrates. Near-spherical Ag nanoparticles (contact angle of 166± 9 ) were synthesized by Ultra Violet (UV) laser dewetting of Ag thin films under a glycerol fluid environment. Under a single 9 nanosecond laser pulse irradiation of the particles in air, the particles were changed into a near-hemispherical shape (with contact angle of 103± 7 ).

Purpose Of Review: The objective of this study is to explore the current literature supporting the use oral multivitamins and multi/minerals (OMVMs) for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) treatment and prevention.

Recent Findings: Data on multivitamins, vitamin C and D, coenzyme Q, calcium, and selenium, has showed no consistent benefit for the prevention of CVD, myocardial infarction, or stroke, nor was there a benefit for all-cause mortality to support their routine supplementation. Folic acid alone and B vitamins with folic acid, B and B, reduce stroke, whereas niacin and antioxidants are associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Old-growth tropical forests harbor an immense diversity of tree species but are rapidly being cleared, while secondary forests that regrow on abandoned agricultural lands increase in extent. We assess how tree species richness and composition recover during secondary succession across gradients in environmental conditions and anthropogenic disturbance in an unprecedented multisite analysis for the Neotropics. Secondary forests recover remarkably fast in species richness but slowly in species composition.

Cantilever resonators based on the roof tile-shaped modes have recently demonstrated their suitability for liquid media monitoring applications. The early studies have shown that certain combinations of dimensions and order of the mode can maximize the Q-factor, what might suggest a competition between two mechanisms of losses with different geometrical dependence. To provide more insight, a comprehensive study of the Q-factor and the resonant frequency of these modes in microcantilever resonators with lengths and widths between 250 and 3000 µm and thicknesses between 10 and 60 µm is presented.
