Antimicrobial drug resistance is an important problem that challenges veterinary clinicians to provide effective treatments without further spreading resistance to other animals and people. The most commonly used pharmacodynamic parameter to define potency of antimicrobial drugs is minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibiotic susceptibility of thirty-six strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from dairy goats with mastitis and rabbits with chronic staphylococcosis.

Mastitis is a significant disease in dairy ruminants, causing economic losses to the livestock industry and severe risks to public health. Antibiotic therapy is one of the most crucial practices to treat mastitis, although the susceptibility of caprine mastitis pathogens to current antibiotics has not been tested under standard or modified incubation conditions. This work evaluated the in vitro activity of tildipirosin, gamithromycin, oxytetracycline, and danofloxacin against caprine mastitis pathogens incubated following standard conditions of Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and deviation method by 25% supplementation with goat serum.

Tylvalosin (TV) is a macrolide antibiotic that is used for treating respiratory and enteric bacterial infections in swine and in poultry. In the coming years, the use of this drug will probably be widely studied in different species, but before its use in each veterinary species, macrolide analytical determination in various biological fluids is a pre-requisite step for the rational dose calculation of TV based on specific pharmacokinetic information. Its quantification is essential for detecting and avoiding the appearance of residues in animal products intended for human consumption.

Tildipirosin is a macrolide currently authorized for treating respiratory diseases in cattle and swine. The disposition kinetics of tildipirosin in plasma, milk, and somatic cells were investigated in dairy goats. Tildipirosin was administered at a single dose of 2 mg/kg by intravenous (IV) and 4 mg/kg by intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SC) routes.

Delafloxacin is a novel fluoroquinolone antibiotic that was approved by the European Medicine Agency to treat bacterial infections of the skin and underlying tissues, and community-acquired pneumonia. Despite being in the market since 2019 in the European Union, there is no published liquid chromatography-fluorescence method for delafloxacin quantification in biological samples. A novel, rapid, and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed to determine delafloxacin in human plasma using its native fluorescence.

Cefuroxime (CFX) is a broad-spectrum second-generation cephalosporin and one of the best choices for antibiotic prophylaxis. However, when used in critically ill patients, it may present changes in its pharmacokinetic properties. Therefore, therapeutic drug monitoring of CFX is necessary for effective dosing strategies.

This study aimed to investigate the specific pharmacokinetic profile and effects of alfaxalone after intravenous (IV) and intramuscular (IM) administration to rabbits and evaluate the potential interaction with dexmedetomidine. The study design was a blinded, randomized crossover with a washout period of 2 weeks. Five New Zealand white rabbits were used.

The single-dose disposition kinetics of cefonicid were determined in clinically normal lactating goats (n = 6) after intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SC) administration of a conventional formulation, and after subcutaneous administration of a long-acting formulation (SC-LA). Cefonicid concentrations were determined by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The concentration-time data were analysed by noncompartmental pharmacokinetic methods.

The disposition kinetics of norfloxacin, after intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous administration was determined in rabbits at a single dose of 10 mg/kg. Six New Zealand white rabbits of both sexes were treated with aqueous solution of norfloxacin (2%). A cross-over design was used in three phases (2 × 2 × 2), with two washout periods of 15 days.

A microwave-based thermal nebulizer (MWTN) has been employed for the first time as on-line preconcentration device in inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). By the appropriate selection of the experimental conditions, the MWTN could be either operated as a conventional thermal nebulizer or as on-line analyte preconcentration and nebulization device. Thus, when operating at microwave power values above 100 W and highly concentrated alcohol solutions, the amount of energy per solvent mass liquid unit (EMR) is high enough to completely evaporate the solvent inside the system and, as a consequence, the analyte is deposited (and then preconcentrated) on the inner walls of the MWTN capillary.

A new system has been developed for the determination of total organic carbon (TOC) and inorganic carbon (IC) or total inorganic carbon (TIC) in waters. Only nonvolatile organic compounds can be detected through the present method. The system presented in this work is based on the measurement of the carbon atomic emission intensity in inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES).

The behaviour of a single-bore high-pressure pneumatic nebulizer (SBHPPN) as a tool for the analysis of lubricating oils by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was investigated. The effects of the sample oil content [from 10% to 100% (w/w) oil in 4-methylpentan-2-one, IBMK] and the carrier nature (IBMK and methanol) on the characteristics of the aerosols generated, on the analyte transport efficiency and on the analytical figures of merit in FAAS were studied. A pneumatic concentric nebulizer (PCN) was used for comparison.

A new thermospray nebulizer based on the absorption of microwave radiation (MWTN) by aqueous solutions of strong acids is presented for the first time. To this end, a given length of the sample capillary is placed inside the cavity of a focused microwave system. A small piece of a narrower capillary tubing is connected at the tip of the sample capillary, outside the microwave cavity, to build up pressure.

Results are shown obtained in the optimization of an automatic flow injection system that combines microwave digestion with atomic spectrometric detection (FAAS, ICP/AES) for the determination of heavy metals in sewage sludge. Digestion is performed by preparing a suspension of the sample in 1.5 mol/l HNO(3) and making it flow through a PTFE capillary tube placed inside a conventional microwave oven.
