Math attitudes and verbal memory in multilingual younger adults.

Previous research on attitudes towards mathematics has mostly been assessed in a single language. We examined whether math attitudes differ by language in multilingual younger adults (ages 18-25). Furthermore, we evaluated the relationships between math attitudes, verbal memory, and calculation fluency in this sample.

Are language-cognition interactions bigger than a breadbox? Integrative modeling and design space thinking temper simplistic questions about causally dense phenomena.

We affirm the utility of integrative modeling, according to which it is advantageous to move beyond "one-at-a-time binary paradigms" through studies that position themselves within realistic multidimensional design spaces. We extend the integrative modeling approach to a target domain with which we are familiar, the consequences of bilingualism on mind and brain, often referred to as the "bilingual advantage." In doing so, we highlight work from our group consistent with integrative modeling.

Using Similarity Metrics to Quantify Differences in High-Throughput Data Sets: Application to X-ray Diffraction Patterns.

The objective of this research is to demonstrate how similarity metrics can be used to quantify differences between sets of diffraction patterns. A set of 49 similarity metrics is implemented to analyze and quantify similarities between different Gaussian-based peak responses, as a surrogate for different characteristics in X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. A methodological approach was used to identify and demonstrate how sensitive these metrics are to expected peak features.

Effects of Tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius) protease inhibitor and semipure lectin fractions on cancer cells.

Some natural and synthetic protease inhibitors (PI), such as the Bowman-Birk PI from soybean, have anticancer effects. We previously purified and characterized a Bowman-Birk-type PI from Tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius) seeds (TBPI). A semipure protein fraction containing this inhibitor, when tested its in vitro effect on transformed cells, showed a differential cytotoxic effect, as well as an increase in cell attachment to culture dishes.

[Ten year experience with ocular lymphomas and ocular adnexae lymphomas].

Background: Ocular lymphomas and ocular adnexae lymphomas (OL and OAL) constitute 7-8% of all extranodal lymphomas.

Objective: Describe the clinical, morphologic and immunophenotypic characteristics of OAL seen in our hospital.

Material And Methods: Retrospective analysis of patient records with OL and OAL between July 1994 and July 2005.

[Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation in aplastic anemia].

Severe aplastic anemia is a rare syndrome characterized by bone marrow failure with cytopenias and hypocellular bone marrow biopsy (usually 10-15%), without blasts or myelodysplasia. The first choice treatment for these patients is allogeneic bone marrow transplantation from a sibling matched for HLA-A, HLA-B and HLA-DR. Unfortunately only 30% of patients have an HLA-matched sibling (a 25% chance per sibling).

The goal of this presentation is the description of the epidemiologic evolution and changes in natural history of the human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) epidemic itself and its relation with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related lymphoma (ARL). We have started with the description of the world's state of the HIV epidemic, its features since the first case report in the United States of America in 1981, through the peak of new diagnoses in 1993 until the event that changed the natural history of the disease: the era of the widespread use of the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), introduced in 1995 in the world and in 1997 in our country. The widespread introduction of HAART led to dramatic reductions in AIDS related mortality and morbidity throughout the developed world with a marked fall in the incidence of the major opportunistic infections in AIDS.
