Fertility preservation counselling and practice among women with lymphomas: a retrospective study.

Background: Research on fertility preservation among women diagnosed with lymphoma is very limited. We aimed to assess the receipt of fertility preservation information and use of fertility preservation among women diagnosed with lymphoma.

Methods: This was a retrospective, single-centre study.

Analysis of Structural Changes of pH-Thermo-Responsive Nanoparticles in Polymeric Hydrogels.

The pH- and thermo-responsive behavior of polymeric hydrogels MC-co-MA have been studied in detail using dynamic light scattering DLS, scanning electron microscopy SEM, nuclear magnetic resonance (H NMR) and rheology to evaluate the conformational changes, swelling-shrinkage, stability, the ability to flow and the diffusion process of nanoparticles at several temperatures. Furthermore, polymeric systems functionalized with acrylic acid MC and acrylamide MA were subjected to a titration process with a calcium chloride CaCl2 solution to analyze its effect on the average particle diameter Dz, polymer structure and the intra- and intermolecular interactions in order to provide a responsive polymer network that can be used as a possible nanocarrier for drug delivery with several benefits. The results confirmed that the structural changes in the sensitive hydrogels are highly dependent on the corresponding critical solution temperature CST of the carboxylic (-COOH) and amide (-CONH) functional groups and the influence of calcium ions Ca2+ on the formation or breaking of hydrogen bonds, as well as the decrease in electrostatic repulsions generated between the polymer chains contributing to a particle agglomeration phenomenon.

Meat-Borne-Parasite: A Nanopore-Based Meta-Barcoding Work-Flow for Parasitic Microbiodiversity Assessment in the Wild Fauna of French Guiana.

French Guiana, located in the Guiana Shield, is a natural reservoir for many zoonotic pathogens that are of considerable medical or veterinary importance. Until now, there has been limited data available on the description of parasites circulating in this area, especially on protozoan belonging to the phylum Apicomplexa; conversely, the neighbouring countries describe a high parasitic prevalence in animals and humans. Epidemiological surveillance is necessary, as new potentially virulent strains may emerge from these forest ecosystems, such as Amazonian toxoplasmosis.

Influence of income on in-hospital mortality in older adults during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic: results from the EDEN-33 study.

Objectives: To determine whether income was associated with unexpected in-hospital mortality in older patients treated in Spanish public health system hospital emergency departments.

Material And Methods: Fifty-one public health system hospital emergency departments in Spain voluntarily participated in the study. Together the hospitals covered 25% of the population aged 65 years or older included in all patient registers during a week in the pre-pandemic period (April 1-7, 2019) and a week during the COVID-19 pandemic (March 30 to April 5, 2020).

Antifungal Activity of Avocado Seed Recombinant GASA/Snakin PaSn.

The avocado fruit () has become a significant fruit in the human diet for its nutritional properties. However, the seed is a source of bioactive molecules and has been poorly utilized. Previously, we reported that the PaSn gene is expressed in the avocado seeds, a cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide (GASA/Snakin), and demonstrated its antibacterial activity.

Unclassifiable lymphoma in pregnancy.

A 28-year-old woman, 15 weeks pregnant, consulted for cervical ache and left laterocervical mass. Imaging scans revealed a large mediastinal mass that had spread to supraclavicular and left axillar spaces, including cervicobrachial plexus. Pathological anatomy confirmed an unclassifiable lymphoma, with intermediate features between diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and classical Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Opsoclonus-myoclonus-ataxia syndrome associated with central nervous system HIV-1 escape phenomenon.

Introduction: Opsoclonus-myoclonus-ataxia (OMA) syndrome is a rare neurological disorder characterized by involuntary conjugate saccadic eye movements, myoclonus, and ataxia. Few reports exist on patients with HIV and OMA.

Case Report: A 41-year-old man diagnosed with HIV-1 infection in 1997 coursed with multiple anti-retroviral schemes as a consequence of poor adherence.

Invisible Bruises: Theoretical and Practical Considerations for Black/Afro-Latina Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

This article focuses on the intersectionality of race, gender, and violence in the lives of Black/Afro-Latinas who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. First, we discuss the trauma of slavery, racism, and colonization in Latin America and the Caribbean, which objectifies Black bodies and renders Blackness invisible. Second, we identify institutional and interpersonal barriers to seeking trauma support.

Computational analysis of the interactions of a novel cephalosporin derivative with β-lactamases.

Background: One of the main concerns of the modern medicine is the frightening spread of antimicrobial resistance caused mainly by the misuse of antibiotics. The researchers worldwide are actively involved in the search for new classes of antibiotics, and for the modification of known molecules in order to face this threatening problem. We have applied a computational approach to predict the interactions between a new cephalosporin derivative containing an additional β-lactam ring with different substituents, and several serine β-lactamases representative of the different classes of this family of enzymes.

Polymorphisms associated with fentanyl pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and adverse effects.

Fentanyl is an agonist of the μ-opioid receptor commonly used in the treatment of moderate-severe pain. In order to study whether pharmacogenetics explains some of the variability in the response to fentanyl, several genes related to fentanyl receptors, transporters and metabolic enzymes have been analysed. Thirty-five healthy volunteers (19 men and 16 women) receiving a single 300 μg oral dose of fentanyl were genotyped for 9 polymorphisms in cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes (CYP3A4 and CYP3A5), ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1), opioid receptor mu 1 (OPRM1), catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and adrenoceptor beta 2 (ADRB2) by real-time PCR.

Use of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics for the authentication of avocado oil in ternary mixtures with sunflower and soybean oils.

Avocado oil is a high-value and nutraceutical oil whose authentication is very important since the addition of low-cost oils could lower its beneficial properties. Mid-FTIR spectroscopy combined with chemometrics was used to detect and quantify adulteration of avocado oil with sunflower and soybean oils in a ternary mixture. Thirty-seven laboratory-prepared adulterated samples and 20 pure avocado oil samples were evaluated.

Self-Empowerment of Immigrant Latina Survivors of Domestic Violence: A Promotora Model of Community Leadership.

This article presents the results of a self-empowerment leadership intervention program for Latina immigrant survivors of domestic violence in Atlanta, Georgia. It builds on the literature base of the Promotora model, a public health model using peer information sharing as a tool for health promotion. This study used an embedded mixed-methods design with quantitative and qualitative components to evaluate the impact of a peer community leadership program called Líderes Results of single-subject analyses show that the participants experienced change in three components of self-empowerment: intrapersonal, interactional, and behavioral.

Antigenic diversity of the Plasmodium vivax circumsporozoite protein in parasite isolates of Western Colombia.

Circumsporozoite (CS) protein is a malaria antigen involved in sporozoite invasion of hepatocytes, and thus considered to have good vaccine potential. We evaluated the polymorphism of the Plasmodium vivax CS gene in 24 parasite isolates collected from malaria-endemic areas of Colombia. We sequenced 27 alleles, most of which (25/27) corresponded to the VK247 genotype and the remainder to the VK210 type.

Becoming baby-friendly in Spain: a quality-improvement process.

Aim: To describe the implementation process and effect of a quality-improvement intervention aimed at achieving compliance with the Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI).

Methods: We conducted a prospective study of the development and evaluation of a quality-improvement intervention at the Yecla Hospital, Spain. A random sample of 1273 infants born in the hospital was followed up in primary care centres between 1997 and 2005.

Synchronicity of pollination and inoculation with Claviceps africana and its effects on pollen-pistil compatibility and seed production in sorghum.

Sorghum ergot (caused by Claviceps africana) is a disease that affects sorghum seed development and yield. The interaction between pollen tube growth and hyphal development determines whether ovaries will be fertilized or colonized. Thus their respective deposition times on the stigma are critical.

Acanthamoeba spp. in domestic tap water in houses of contact lens wearers in the metropolitan area of Mexico City.

A survey was carried out in the metropolitan area of Mexico City to determine the presence of Acanthamoeba in the tap water of houses of contact lens wearers. Water samples were taken from the mains water entry, bathroom sinks and storage containers (roof tanks, cisterns) of 27 houses; and from the solution contained in the contact lens cases. Samples were filtered and cultured onto NNE medium.

[Gestational diabetes. Behavior factors risk in Mexican population].

Background: Gestational diabetes (GD) is third in frequency according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and it affects 7% of pregnancies in Mexico, it is related with greater morbidity and mortality. An early diagnosis can avoid pregnancy problems, however the detection of these cases depends on the presence risk factors. Our objective was to know which are the risk factors more frequent for identifiying GD.

Mortality predictive indexes in non-critical inpatients.

Background: Mortality predictive indexes have not been applied to patients in general wards out of the ICU.

Methods: Retrolective study aimed to evaluate the value of mortality prediction indexes in a cohort of 944 non-critical patients. Three indexes were evaluated according to their calibration and discriminative power: the Mortality Probability Model II (MPMII), the Simplified Acute Physiology System II (SAPS II) and the Logistic Organ Dysfunction System (LODS).

[Gender and accessibility barriers to treatment in alcohol abuse patients in the Autonomous Region of Valencia].

Introduction: This study aimed at identifying the factors that contribute to delaying the access of alcohol abuse patients to specific treatment centres in the Autonomous Region of Valencia (Spain).

Method: 563 patients from Addictive Behaviours Units (UCA) and Alcohology Units (UA) were interviewed. A survey was conducted which included items on previous requested treatment in other centres and on barriers of accessibility to treatment in specific ambulatory centres.

Late Pleistocene/Holocene craniofacial morphology in Mesoamerican Paleoindians: implications for the peopling of the New World.

Several studies on craniofacial morphology showed that most Paleoindians, who were the first settlers of the New World, clearly differ from modern Amerindians and East Asians, their supposed descendants and sister group, respectively. Here we present new evidence supporting this view from the Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene horizon from Mexico, as well as from the most complete set of dated Paleoindian remains. We analyzed the phenotypic resemblance of early Mexicans with other South Paleoamerican and modern human series.

[Emboligenic mitral papillary fibroelastoma and positive antiphospholipid antibodies].

Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma has been associated to high levels of antiphospholipid antibodies, either primary or in the context of systemic lupus erythematosus. We present the case of a young female with several episodes of peripheral emboli. Two-dimensional echocardiography demonstrated a tumor on the anterior mitral leaflet.

[Arterial hypertension in pediatrics].

Several aspects related to arterial hypertension in children are reviewed: definitions, frequency, classification, etiology, pathogenesis, symptomatology and the treatment that is available, stressing emphasis on available data in relative national literature. It is concluded that more investigations are needed to answer the questions and doubts that exist at present.
