Skeletal muscle (SkM) comprises slow and fast-twitch fibers, which differ in molecular composition, function, and systemic energy consumption. In addition, muscular dystrophies (DM), a group of diverse hereditary diseases, present different patterns of muscle involvement, progression, and severity, suggesting that the regeneration-degeneration process may differ depending on the muscle type. Therefore, the study aimed to explore the expression of proteins involved in the repair process in different muscles at an early stage of muscular dystrophy in the δ-sarcoglycan null mice (Sgcd-null), a limb-girdle muscular dystrophy 2 F model.

Co-clinical trials are the concurrent or sequential evaluation of therapeutics in both patients clinically and patient-derived xenografts (PDX) pre-clinically, in a manner designed to match the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the agent(s) used. The primary goal is to determine the degree to which PDX cohort responses recapitulate patient cohort responses at the phenotypic and molecular levels, such that pre-clinical and clinical trials can inform one another. A major issue is how to manage, integrate, and analyze the abundance of data generated across both spatial and temporal scales, as well as across species.

The success of treatment for condylar fractures is usually assessed by functional outcomes, while studies on patient perceptions are scarce. A cross-sectional study was performed to assess the middle-term quality of life, related to both general health and oral health, of patients treated for subcondylar fracture, either by open reduction or by closed fixation, compared to healthy volunteers. In a single trauma centre, among 226 consecutive patients with subcondylar fractures that were treated in years 2018-2019 (two to three years prior to the survey), 148 fulfilled the selection criteria.

Background: There are many clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) in Nephrology; however, there is no evidence that their availability has improved the clinical competence of physicians or the outcome of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of implementation of CPGs for early CKD on family physicians (FP) clinical competence and subsequently on kidney function preservation of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) patients at a primary healthcare setting.

Methods: A prospective educative intervention (40-h) based on was applied to FP; a questionnaire to evaluate clinical competence was applied at the beginning and end of the educative intervention (0 and 2 months), and 12 months afterwards.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on three diterpenes from Salvia ballotiflora, evaluating their immunomodulatory effects on innate immunity and cytokine production in human alveolar cells infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • - Findings indicate that anastomosine and 7,20-dihydroanastomosine significantly boost reactive nitrogen species (RNS) production after 36 hours and reactive oxygen species (ROS) after 12 hours post-treatment, showcasing their potential role in enhancing innate immunity.
  • - The diterpenes exhibited an anti-inflammatory effect by modulating TGF-β levels; however, they did not significantly affect TNF-α release, suggesting a selective immune response to the tuberculosis infection.

Background: Immunization or vaccination is the process of inducing artificial immunity against an antigen taking advantage of the mechanisms of immunological memory. Current vaccines include substances known as adjuvants, which tend to improve the immunogenicity of the antigen, reduce the antigen quantity employed, and boost the immune response in weak responders. Unfortunately, only a few vaccine adjuvants are approved for human use.

Background: Over 96% of high-grade ovarian carcinomas and 50% of all cancers are characterized by alterations in the p53 gene. Therapeutic strategies to restore and/or reactivate the p53 pathway have been challenging. By contrast, p63, which shares many of the downstream targets and functions of p53, is rarely mutated in cancer.

Rationale: The jumbo squid Dosidicus gigas is a fishery resource of considerable economic and ecological importance in the Mexican Pacific. Studies on its habitat preferences are needed to understand recent fluctuations in the abundance and availability of the species. Stable isotope analysis allows us to infer ecological aspects such as spatial distribution and trophic preferences.

In Mexico, there is a high prevalence of early nephropathy that usually goes unnoticed and may in part be due to the acquisition of “moderns” negative habits a lifestyle from an early age like physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, smoking and alcohol intake abuse associated with the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity, diabetes and hypertension, leading causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Mexico. These behaviors are difficult to control by medical intervention alone and may be associated with lack of resources of patients to perform self-care activities and the health care-model predominant in México also may be insufficient to generate healthy behaviors. To improve the care of patients from early stages of CKD, is necessary to implement multidisciplinary strategies to empower the patient and develop their self-efficacy to carry out self-care actions to manage their disease, control risk factors, promotion of healthy habits and modify risk behaviors.

Ovarian cancer presents as an aggressive, advanced stage cancer with widespread metastases that depend primarily on multicellular spheroids in the peritoneal fluid. To identify new druggable pathways related to metastatic progression and spheroid formation, we integrated microRNA and mRNA sequencing data from 293 tumors from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) ovarian cancer cohort. We identified miR-509-3p as a clinically significant microRNA that is more abundant in patients with favorable survival in both the TCGA cohort (P = 2.

Reproductive characteristics of the Pacific angel shark, Squatina californica, were evaluated from 420 specimens obtained from the artisanal fishery in La Paz Bay, Gulf of California, Mexico. Females (99 cm, 6000 g) were larger than males (95 cm, 5000 g) in terms of both total length (L(T)) and body mass (M(T)). The overall sex ratio was significantly different from the expected 1:1, suggesting sexual segregation of mature individuals in La Paz Bay.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide epidemic especially in developing countries, with clear deficiencies in identification and treatment. Better care of CKD requires more than only economic resources, utilization of health research in policy-making and health systems changes that produce better outcomes. A multidisciplinary approach may facilitate and improve management of patients from early CKD in the primary health-care setting.

Background: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Network recently comprehensively catalogued the molecular aberrations in 487 high-grade serous ovarian cancers, with much remaining to be elucidated regarding the microRNAs (miRNAs). Here, using TCGA ovarian data, we surveyed the miRNAs, in the context of their predicted gene targets.

Methods And Results: Integration of miRNA and gene patterns yielded evidence that proximal pairs of miRNAs are processed from polycistronic primary transcripts, and that intronic miRNAs and their host gene mRNAs derive from common transcripts.

To study the potential of three bacterial pathogens to cross-contaminate orange juice during extraction, normal operation conditions during juice preparation at food service establishments were simulated. The spread of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes from inoculated oranges to work surfaces and to the final product was determined. The transference of these three bacterial pathogens to orange juice made from uninoculated oranges with the use of contaminated utensils was also studied.
