Two ELC isoforms are expressed in fast skeletal muscle, a long isoform and its NH(2)-terminal approximately 40 amino acid shorter counterpart, whereas only the long ELC is observed in the heart. Biochemical and structural studies revealed that the NH(2)-terminus of the long ELC can make direct contacts with actin, but the effects of the ELC on the affinity of myosin for actin, ATPase, force, and the kinetics of force generating myosin cross-bridges are inconclusive.

The structures of 4-dimethylamino-beta-nitrostyrene (DANS), C10H12N2O2, and 4-dimethylamino-beta-ethyl-beta-nitrostyrene (DAENS), C12H16N2O2, have been solved at T=100 K. The structure solution for DANS was complicated by the presence of a static disorder, characterized by a misorientation of 17% of the molecules. The molecule of DANS is almost planar, indicating significant conjugation, with a push-pull effect through the styrene skeleton extending up to the terminal substituents and enhancing the dipole moment.

The purpose of our study was to determine the diagnostic significance of an elevated CD4/CD8 ratio in lymph node fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens.
Design: Between 1996 and 2002, out of 837 lymph node FNAs submitted for flow cytometry analysis, 85 cases showed an elevated CD4/CD8 ratio, defined as greater than or equal to 4, without definitive evidence of a lymphoproliferative disorder.
We have studied the physiological effects of the troponin T (TnT) F110I and R278C mutations associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (FHC) in humans. Three to four-month-old transgenic (Tg) mice expressing F110I-TnT and R278C-TnT did not develop significant hypertrophy or ventricular fibrosis even after chronic exercise challenge. The F110I mutation impaired acute exercise tolerance, whereas R278C did not.

Based on qualitative criteria [J Neurosci 21 (2001) 7303], FRAs were classified as V-shaped in 69% of neurons, non-V-shaped in 29%, and unclassifiable in the remaining 2%.
