Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated the effectiveness and persistence of golimumab (GLM) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis, and psoriatic arthritis who previously used other TNF inhibitors compared to those who haven't.
  • A total of 192 patients were included, with follow-up results indicating that the majority discontinued GLM due to inefficacy, and the median survival for GLM treatment was similar for both experienced and naive patients.
  • The study concluded that prior TNFi experience did not significantly affect the survival or persistence of GLM treatment, but having public health insurance was linked to higher discontinuation rates.

Article Synopsis
  • Uveitis is a common complication in patients with Spondyloarthritis (SpA), and this study examined how frequently it occurs, its geographical variations, and whether it has changed since the introduction of biologic treatments.
  • A total of 3984 patients across 22 countries were assessed, revealing that the likelihood of experiencing uveitis increases significantly over time, with various factors like HLA-B27 positivity and a family history of uveitis linked to a higher risk.
  • Results indicated a drastic reduction in the prevalence and incidence of uveitis in patients who started treatment after 2000, suggesting that biologic therapies may help mitigate this condition.

Background/objective: This study describes the impact of immunomodulatory and/or immunosuppressive (IM/IS) drugs in the outcomes of COVID-19 infection in a cohort of patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs).

Methods: Adult patients with IMIDs with a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were included. Data were reported by the treating physician between August 13, 2020 and July 31, 2021.

Background/objective: This study aims to describe the course and to identify poor prognostic factors of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with rheumatic diseases.

Methods: Patients ≥ 18 years of age, with a rheumatic disease, who had confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were consecutively included by major rheumatology centers from Argentina, in the national, observational SAR-COVID registry between August 13, 2020 and July 31, 2021. Hospitalization, oxygen requirement, and death were considered poor COVID-19 outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify factors linked to severe outcomes in individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who contracted COVID-19, using data from a global registry.
  • Significant findings revealed that older age, male sex, higher doses of prednisone, the presence of comorbidities (like kidney or cardiovascular disease), and moderate to high SLE disease activity were associated with more severe outcomes.
  • Furthermore, the type of medication used affected the severity, with treatments like mycophenolate, rituximab, and cyclophosphamide correlated with worse outcomes compared to hydroxychloroquine, while methotrexate and belimumab showed more favorable results.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of depression among rheumatoid arthritis (RA) Argentinean patients and its association with sociodemographic and clinical factors.

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of consecutive adults with RA. Sociodemographic data, comorbidities, RA disease activity, and current treatment were assessed.

To validate the Quality of Life-Rheumatoid Arthritis Scale II (QOL-RA II) in an Argentinean cohort of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Patients ≥ 18 years old, with a diagnosis of RA according to ACR-EULAR 2010 criteria, were included in a cross-sectional study. Sociodemographic data, comorbidities, RA characteristics, disease activity, and current treatment were registered.

Background/objective: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is preceded by psoriasis in approximately 80% of cases. Dermatologists are pivotal for early detection. It is important to have simple tools that allow the detection of PsA in patients with skin psoriasis.

Background: The SpENAT, a Spanish version of the Educational Needs Assessment Tool, is a self-completed questionnaire that assesses educational needs (ENs) with the purpose of providing tailored and patient-centered information. It consists of 39 questions grouped into the 7 following domains: Pain management, Movement, Feelings, Arthritic process, Treatments, Self-help measures and Support system.

Objectives: The objective of the study was to describe the ENs of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients using the SpENAT and to determine the main sources of information consulted by these patients.

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or undifferentiated arthritis (UA) in the CONAART database (Argentine Consortium for Early Arthritis) were assessed for genetic risk factors for RA, specifically for HLA-DRB1 alleles and the PTPN22 rs2476601 polymorphism associated with progression to RA. This is a case-control study. Blood samples were obtained to determine HLA-DRB1 genotypes by PCR-SSO Luminex and PTPN22 (rs2476601) polymorphism by allelic discrimination.

Objective: The aims of this study were to describe the indications for, and features of, axial/peripheral joint magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and to examine the influence of MRI findings on clinical practice.

Methods: All axial and peripheral (hand and/or foot) MRI scans on patients attending the Toronto PsA clinic l between 2003 and 2014 were included. Scan details were garnered from the radiologist's official report.

The aim of the study was to compare clinical manifestations, disease activity, functional capacity, spinal mobility, and radiological findings between men and women from a multicenter, multiethnic Ibero-American cohort of patients with Spondyloarthritis (SpA).This observational cross-section study included 1264 consecutive SpA patients who fulfilled the modified New York criteria for ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Demographic, clinical, and radiologic data were evaluated.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is the second most common chronic inflammatory joint disease. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is another less common but equally chronic and disabling spondyloarthritis (SpA). Therapeutic agents for the treatment of these diseases have been somewhat lacking as compared with those available for rheumatoid arthritis, which represents a significant challenge for both the treating physician and the pharmaceutical industry.

Musculoskeletal symptoms are the most frequent extra-intestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ranging between 10 and 40 % of cases. Pathogenesis is still unclear, although several factors have been associated (genetic, environmental, and immunologic pathways). Rheumatic manifestations in IBD patients are heterogeneous, including axial and peripheral involvement, dactylitis, enthesitis, uveitis, as well as skin involvement.

The systemic vasculitis is a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by the inflammation of blood vessels. The development of advanced diagnostic tests and genetic studies have resulted in greater improvement in our understanding of vasculitis pathogenesis and thus in the development of newer therapies. However, there is still an unmet need in the management of systemic vasculitis, focused on developing of new biomarkers that would enable distinction between active disease from damage or infection and predict treatment response and prognosis.

Our objective was to analyze the effects of cigarette smoking on disease activity, functional capacity, radiographic damage, serology and presence of extraarticular manifestations in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and undifferentiated arthritis. This is a cross-sectional study of 1,305 patients (729 with rheumatoid arthritis and 576 with undifferentiated arthritis) from CONAART, the Argentine Consortium for Early Arthritis that includes patients older than 16 years with <2 years of disease. Sociodemographic data, clinical characteristics of the disease and smoking history were collected.
