Evaluation of the QIAstat-Dx Meningitis/Encephalitis Panel, a multiplex PCR platform for the detection of community-acquired meningoencephalitis.

Rapid identification of the causative pathogens of central nervous system infections is essential for providing appropriate management and improving patient outcomes. The performance of QIAstat-Dx Meningitis/Encephalitis (ME) Panel-a multiplex PCR testing platform-in detecting pathogens implicated in meningitis and/or encephalitis was evaluated using BioFire FilmArray ME Panel as a comparator method. This multicenter study analyzed 585 retrospective residual cerebrospinal fluid specimens and 367 contrived specimens.

[Detection of latent fingerprints by the use of silver nitrate].

Silver nitrate has been an established agent for the detection of latent fingerprints for some 120 years, and it was one of the few reagents suitable for use on porous surfaces until ninhydrin was introduced in forensics. The method is based on the reaction of silver ions with chlorides in the fingerprints, which are visualized in brown, violet or black. The literature describes many variations of the procedure, but the information provided is often vague and imprecise.

[Humidity as a necessary condition for latent fingerprint detection with ninhydrin--a practice-oriented and inexpensive method using potassium citrate].

Ninhydrin is a common reagent for latent fingerprint detection on porous surfaces, and water in the form of humidity is an essential factor in the developing process. Beside climatic chambers running on electricity, the required humidity can also be reached by using saturated salt solution. The influence of different climatic conditions on the developing process is shown by using test strips (as analytical standards).

[Carbamide peroxide as source of hydrogen peroxide for the luminol application at crime scenes].

The solution of hydrogen peroxide is a critical ingredient of the Weber luminol application for blood detection at the crime scene. An ideal alternative to the unstable hydrogen peroxide is a solid compound which is easy to transport, stable and quick to solve in water at the crime scene. Carbamide peroxide (urea peroxide) is one of these solid hydrogen peroxide carriers which is easy to obtain as one gram tablets.

[Ninhydrin permeability tests of common packaging materials in the field of fingerprint examination].

With a simple experimental set-up, common packaging materials were tested for their ninhydrin permeability. The packaging material was loaded with a ninhydrin treated paper on the inside and covered with an amino acid treated paper on the outside. If ninhydrin penetrates through the packaging film, "Ruhemann's purple" will form on the amino acid treated paper.

[Malignant tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses in the years 1971-2005 in the material of the Otolaryngology Clinic WIM].

Unlabelled: The aim of this study was retrospective analysis of evidence concerning to malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses diagnosed in Otolaryngology Clinic of the Military Institute of the Health Service 1971-2005. The methods of therapy were also discussed.

Material And Methods: Material comprised 113 patients (35 females and 78 males) with diagnosis of malignant tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses.

[The large tumour of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses--a case report].

The authors described the case of the large tumour of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses caused total occlusion of the right nasal cavity. The greater part of the tumour was outside of the nasal cavity. Computed tomography showed: a mass, which filled nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, ethmoid, frontal and translocated the septum.

[Application of the fusafungine in perioperative period in patients after tonsillectomy].

The only treatment method in chronic palatine tonsillitis is the removal of tonsils (tonsillectomy). The study aimed at a clinical evaluation of postoperative fusafungine use in patients who underwent tonsillectomy. The study included 200 patients who underwent tonsillectomy for chronic palatine pyotonsillitis in the Otolaryngology Clinic of the Military Institute for the Health Services in Warsaw between 2000 and 2002.

[Sinus barotrauma and the functional endoscopic sinus surgery].

Sinus barotrauma is quite common illness, which affects the passengers of the planes and the air staff. The authors describe possibilities of the course of treatment these patients with special regard to the functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

[Rare case of a large foreign body in the orbital region].

The authors described a case of the patient with a foreign body of the orbit, which was glass-baquette. Arrived she at orbit by chance by skin of bottom eyelid below medial of angle of eye. Glassy foreign body (lengths about 6 cm) was removed during operation.

[Usefulness of neuron specific enolase in patients with head and neck malignant tumors].

The authors present results of evaluation of neuron specific enolase (NSE) in 146 persons. We analyzed a concentration of NSE in preliminary study and in monitoring depending on clinical advances of tumour, mass of primary tumour and metastases to lymph nodes. Neuron specific enolase was excluded because the number of positive results was the same both in the main and control group.

[Alpha-fetoprotein--diagnostic utility in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck].

The authors present results of evaluation of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in 146 persons (108 patients with head and neck carcinoma and 38 healthy persons as control group). We analyzed a concentration of AFP in preliminary study and in monitoring depending on clinical advances of tumour, mass of primary tumour and metastases to lymph nodes. Our results indicate that evaluation of AFP have not high value in diagnostic procedures and monitoring patients with head and neck carcinoma.

[Serum levels of tissue polypeptide antigen in patients with the head and neck cancer according to presence of metastases in lymph nodes].

[The value of gastrointestinal antigens in the monitoring of patients with malignant head neoplasms].

[Gastrointestinal cancer antigen and immunoglobulins G, A, M in patients with head cancer].

The authors present the results of examinations of immunoglobulins A, G, M serum concentrations and of a sensitivity of test of biochemical tumor marker (Ca 19-9) in a group of 35 patients with head malignant tumors. There was a statistically significant increase of immunoglobulins IgA, IgG and decrease of immunoglobulin IgM. We observed statistical correlation between serum concentrations of IgA, IgG and serum concentrations of IgA, IgM.

[A case of objective tinnitus].

The authors presented a case of objective tinnitus in patient with glomus tumor suspicion. Tinnitus epidemiology, classification, causes and diagnostic procedure were described. Any organic alterations, which would cause tinnitus, did not find.

[The influence of antihistamine agents on reaction time].

Authors carried out the study of reaction time on auditory stimulus in a group of 200 patients taking a single dose of: Clemastin, Phenazolinum, Zyrtec, Astemizol, Claritin, Disophrol and placebo. The results indicate the prolongation of reaction time after the administration of either first or second generation antihistaminics.

[A skull base tumor complicated by rhinorrhea].

The authors presented a case of rare skull base tumor complicated by rhinorrhoea. Diagnostic procedures and surgical treatment by laryngo-neurosurgical team was described.

[Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: diagnostic problems].

The aim of this article was to describe rarely occurred non-Hodgkin's lymphomas from peripheral lymphocyte T. Epidemiology, course of the disease and difficulties of diagnostic was described with the special regards of early diagnostic.

[Tumor markers in monitoring of neoplasms].

Prophylaxis, diagnosis, radical treatment and monitoring have a basic significance in the clinic of head cancers. The aim of the clinical course of malignant disease preferred prematurely detection of the recurrence. In the monitoring wide applications have tumor markers.

[Diagnostic difficulties in neck tumors].

Neck tumors classification and accessory investigations helpful in diagnosis were presented. An attention was paid to the fact, that not seldom provisional diagnosis appeared to be wrong. Due to exact examination necessity of surgical treatment in some cases was excluded.

[A case of laryngeal glandular cancer].

The authors described the rare case of larynx adenocarcinoma. T3 N3 M1 tumor of larynx in 53 years old patients was monitoring by the serum levels of cancer markers: AFP, CEA, Ca 19-9, ferritin, NSE, SCC. High levels of markers were observed.
