Sustaining a nurse-led community partnership to promote environmental justice.

The Westlawn Partnership for a Healthier Environment (WPHE) is a longstanding group of community stakeholders that was formed over a decade ago to identify, prioritize, and address environmental health (EH) concerns in a low-income, predominantly African American, urban neighborhood, which faces a disproportionate burden of EH risks, particularly asthma. Launched by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Nursing, which established a nurse-managed health center within the community 30 years ago, WPHE utilized the Protocol of Assessing Community Excellence in Environment Health methodology to develop, implement, and sustain the partnership. WPHE implemented programs for Healthy Homes, Healthy Day Cares, and bicycling, and made system and infrastructure changes within the community to address the top identified EH concerns: indoor and outdoor air pollution, mold exposure, access to safe and healthy food, and pesticide exposure.

Irrigation with phosphate-buffered saline causes corneal calcification during treatment of ocular burns.

Corneal calcification is a vision-threatening manifestation of calcium containing agents in ocular burn. As we previously reported, our interest was sparked by a particular discrepancy of a case: A patient treated for a non-calcium containing agent in eye burn from exposure to an alkaline mixture of NaOH and KOH, who unexpectedly developed corneal calcification. This current study aims to elucidate whether the 2min lasting irrigation with a phosphate-buffered saline itself, regardless of rinsing regimen, triggers corneal calcification.

Targeted delivery of nanoparticles to cells or tissues of interest is arguably the "holy grail" of nanomedicine. Using primary human macrophages and ovarian cancer cells, we evaluated the biocompatibility and specific targeting of folic acid (FA)-conjugated iron oxide nanoparticles with organic [poly(ethylene glycol), PEG] or inorganic (SiO2) intermediate surface coatings. Reduction of folate receptor-α expression using specific siRNA resulted in a significant decrease in cellular uptake of the SiO2-coated nanoparticles, but did not affect uptake of PEG-coated nanoparticles.

In the course of collecting historical material about the first psychoanalytic in-patient clinic ("Sanatorium Schloss Tegel") in the years 1927-1931, the authors discovered an unpublished typescript by Ernst Simmel entitled "Neurotic criminality and lust murder". On the basis of clinic records, excerpts from letters, and personal information, the authors supplement Simmel's treatment report of a lust murderess with a historical, documentary text, which is followed by Simmel's paper.

Under the conditions of persecution and repression imposed by Nazi Germany there was no productive contribution to psycho-analytical science. The limitations responsible for this are outlined. After classing the psycho-analytical writings of these years into groups, the production and publication practice of the period is examined through the works of Alexander Mette.

[Results and critical analysis of the treatment of obesity with the intragastric balloon].
