Background: Basophils in acute asthma exacerbation are activated as evidenced by their increased expression levels of activation markers such as CD203c and CD63. However, whether basophils of allergic asthmatics who are in stable phase and have no asthma exacerbations display a specific and distinctive phenotype from those of healthy individuals has yet to be well characterized.

Objective: We aimed to identify the phenotype of basophils from allergic asthmatics in the stable phase and investigate whether such a phenotype is affected by allergen stimulation.

Background: Amiodarone is a class III antiarrhythmic drug used to prevent supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias. It has substantial toxicity; however, the use of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) seems unclear in the absence of a therapeutic range or an association between amiodarone blood concentration and effect. In this review, the authors examined the reported amiodarone blood concentration measurements in the last 10 years and subsequently noted the frequency by which TDM was used to optimize therapy.

The aging population and the associated demand for orthopedic surgeries are increasing health costs. Although the Diagnostic Related Groups (DRG) system was introduced to offer incentives for hospitals, concerns remain that reimbursements for older and frail patients do not cover all hospital expenses. We investigated further: (1) Does age influence net financial results in orthopedic surgery? (2) Are there patient or surgical factors that influence results? This retrospective, monocentric study compares costs and reimbursements for orthopedic patients in a tertiary care hospital in Switzerland between 2015 and 2017.

Intra-hemispheric interference has been often observed when body parts with neighboring representations within the same hemisphere are stimulated. However, patterns of interference in early and late somatosensory processing stages due to the stimulation of different body parts have not been explored. Here, we explore functional similarities and differences between attention modulation of the somatosensory N140 and P300 elicited at the fingers vs.

Background: No surgical intervention is without risk. Readmissions and reoperations after elective orthopedic surgery are common and are also stressful for the patient. It has been shown that a comprehensive ortho-medical co-management model decreases readmission rates in older patients suffering from hip fracture; but it is still unclear if this also applies to elective orthopedic surgery.

Numerous studies have shown that perioperative heparin bridging in patients treated with a vitamin K antagonist leads to an increased incidence of bleeding and so far, there is no evidence that it leads to a significant reduction in postoperative thromboembolism as summarised in this review. Prophylactic dosage of heparin is recommended after major surgery. Heparin bridging is not relevant in patients receiving a direct oral anticoagulant due to the rapid onset and offset of action of DOACs.

The preparation of nucleic acid nanostructures has relied predominantly on procedures of additive fabrication in which complex architectures are assembled by concerted self-assembly and sequential addition of building blocks. We had previously established RNA-DNA hybrid nanoshapes with modular architectures that enable multistep synthetic approaches inspired by organic molecular synthesis where additive and transformative steps are used to prepare complex molecular architectures. We report the establishment of module replacement and strand exchange as synthetic transformations in nucleic acid hybrid nanoshapes, which are enabled by minimally destabilizing sequence elements such as a single unpaired overhang nucleotide or a mismatch base pair.

The protection of groundwater resources from non-point-source pollutants, such as those coming from agricultural practices, is the focus of several European Directives, including the Water Framework Directive and the Pesticide Directive. Besides the environmental goals to be reached by the single EU member state, these directives clearly underline the role of experts in supporting planners and public authorities to fulfil these objectives. This work presents a new web-based, freely-available dynamical tool, named the pesticide fate tool, developed within the geospatial Decision Support system (DSS), LandSupport, for the assessment of groundwater vulnerability, specific for type of pollutant.

Design and preparation of layered composite materials alternating between nucleic acids and proteins has been elusive due to limitations in occurrence and geometry of interaction sites in natural biomolecules. We report the design and kinetically controlled stepwise synthesis of a nano-sandwich composite by programmed noncovalent association of protein, DNA and RNA modules. A homo-tetramer protein core was introduced to control the self-assembly and precise positioning of two RNA-DNA hybrid nanotriangles in a co-parallel sandwich arrangement.

Purpose: Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) prevents surgical site infections (SSI). In orthopaedic surgery, the use of prolonged SAP (PSAP) has been reported in daily routine, despite guidelines advising against it. Therefore, we asked: What is the proportion of PSAP use, defined as administration of SAP ≥24 h after elective orthopaedic surgery? Are there patient- and surgery-related predictors of PSAP use?

Methods: This cross-sectional analysis investigated 1292 patients who underwent elective orthopaedic surgery including total joint arthroplasties at one Swiss centre between 2015 and 2017.

The design of hybrid nucleic acid nanomaterials capitalizes on the partitioning of architectural and functional roles between structurally diverse RNA modules and chemically robust DNA components. Selecting optimal combinations of RNA and DNA building blocks is the key to preparing stable polygonal RNA-DNA hybrid nanoshapes. Here, we outline a simple screening strategy by gel electrophoresis under native folding conditions to identify combinations of RNA and DNA modules that self-assemble to robust polygonal hybrid nanoshapes.

Preoperative decolonization, especially of Staphylococcus aureus carriers, has been proposed to reduce periprosthetic joint infections (PJI), but the evidence-based consensus is still lacking and data on long-term outcomes is scarce. In a previous randomized, single-blinded trial, decolonization produced no significant reduction of surgical site infections in overall elective orthopedic surgery at 3-month follow-up. A 2-year follow-up was then performed to specifically detect the impact of decolonization on delayed-onset PJI (3-24 months after surgery).
