The cellular isoform of prion protein, PrPc, may confer neuroprotection in the brain, according to recent studies. To elucidate the role of PrPc in stroke pathology, we subjected PrPc-knockout (Prnp(0/0)), wild-type and PrPc-transgenic (tga20) mice to 30 min of intraluminal middle cerebral artery occlusion, followed by 3, 24 or 72 h reperfusion, and examined how PrPc levels influence brain injury and cell signaling. Side effects from a high-dose clozapine treatment for a schizophrenic patient led to massive compliance problems. The dose of clozapine could be halved without recurrence of an acute psychotic symptomatology by concomitantly administering amisulpride. The side effects, especially hypersalivation, disappeared almost entirely, which in turn led to good compliance.

We demonstrate that the infiltration of individual pores of certain two-dimensional photonic crystals with liquid crystals and (or) polymers provides an efficient platform for the realization of integrated photonic crystal circuitry. As an illustration of this principle, we present designs for monomode photonic crystal wave-guides and certain functional elements, such as waveguide bends, beam splitters, and waveguide intersections. These devices exhibit very low reflection over broad frequency ranges.

Objective: To test the association between thyroid dysfunction and psychiatric diagnostic group in a large sample of consecutive patients, while controlling for the effects of age, sex, medication and concomitant medical conditions.

Methods: We compared the distribution of psychiatric diagnostic groups according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision (ICD-10), and of selected psychopathological symptoms in 100 newly admitted psychiatric patients who had genuine thyroid disease and 92 psychiatric patients who had nonspecific alterations of thyroid function with the corresponding items for the whole group of admitted patients (n = 1134) during the observation period. This analysis was then repeated using an age-matched and sex-matched comparison group selected from all admitted patients in a random order.

Background: The pleasant effects of food and alcohol intake are partially mediated by mu-opiate receptors in the ventral striatum, a central area of the brain reward system. Blockade of mu-opiate receptors with naltrexone reduces the relapse risk among some but not all alcoholic individuals.

Major depression is conditionally linked to a polymorphism of the human serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4). During the presentation of aversive, but not pleasant, pictures, healthy carriers of the SLC6A4 short (s) allele showed stronger activation of the amygdala on functional magnetic resonance imaging. s carriers also showed greater coupling between the amygdala and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, which may contribute to the abnormally high activity in the amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex seen in major depression.

Apart from its hematopoietic function, erythropoietin (Epo) exerts neuroprotective activity upon reduced oxygenation or ischemia of brain, retina, and spinal cord. To examine whether Epo has an impact on the retrograde degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) following optic nerve transection in vivo, we made use of our transgenic mouse line tg21 that constitutively expresses human Epo preferentially in neuronal cells without inducing polycythemia. We show that the tg21 retina expresses human Epo and that RGCs in this mouse line carry the Epo receptor.

Objective: Alcohol and other drugs of abuse stimulate dopamine release in the ventral striatum, which includes the nucleus accumbens, a core region of the brain reward system, and reinforce substance intake. Chronic alcohol intake is associated with down-regulation of central dopamine D(2) receptors, and delayed recovery of D(2) receptor sensitivity after detoxification is positively correlated with high risk for relapse. Prolonged D(2) receptor dysfunction in the ventral striatum may interfere with a dopamine-dependent error detection signal and bias the brain reward system toward excessive attribution of incentive salience to alcohol-associated stimuli.

The superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1)G93A mouse was recently established as transgenic model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We were interested to know whether the SOD1 G93A mutation promotes neuronal injury after intraluminal middle cerebral artery thread occlusion and/or retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axotomy in mice, which are highly reproducible and clinically relevant in vivo models of acute and subacute neuronal degeneration, respectively. In our experiments, G93A mutant SOD1 neither influenced ischemic injury after 90 or 30 min of focal ischemia, nor had an impact on the severity of RGC degeneration after optic nerve transection, when human SOD1 G93A mutant mice were compared to human wild-type SOD1 mice.

We report on an 11-year-old pupil who present-ed to a neurological practice in the company of his parents because of migraine and strong headaches. Precise anamnesis of drugs yielded the diagnosis of a drug-induced headache with underlying migraine disease. The boy was afflict-ed with a hereditary taint, as both parents also suffered from migraine.
