Potassium currents play a critical role in action potential repolarization, setting of the resting membrane potential, control of neuronal firing rates, and regulation of neurotransmitter release. The diversity of the potassium channels that generate these currents is nothing less than staggering. This diversity is generated by multiple genes (as many as 100 and perhaps more in some creatures) encoding the pore-forming channel alpha subunits, alternative splicing of channel gene transcripts, formation of heteromultimeric channels, participation of auxiliary (non-pore-forming) beta and other subunits, and modulation of channel properties by post-translational modifications and other mechanisms.

The mechanism and regulation of this release was now studied in cerebral cortical and striatal slices with D-[3H]aspartate, a non-metabolized analogue of L-glutamate and a poor substrate for vesicular uptake. View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe studied 479 perimenopausal Danish women aged 45-58 years to examine differences between APOE genotypes with respect to (1) baseline total body bone mineral density (BMD) and densities measured in five different regions (ultradistal forearm, proximal forearm, lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip region); (2) serum levels of alkaline phosphatase, bone isoenzyme alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and urine hydroxyproline/creatinine excretion ratio; and (3) changes in bone mineral during 5 years of follow-up. Baseline BMDs were identical, whereas serum levels of alkaline phosphatase and its bone isoenzyme were higher in women with APOE 2-2 and APOE 2-3 than in women with APOE 3-3 and APOE 3-4 and lower in women with APOE 4-4. Among women not receiving hormonal-replacement therapy (HRT; n = 262), those with APOE 2-2 and APOE 2-3 had 30-40% lower rates of femoral neck and total hip bone mineral loss than women with APOE 3-3 and APOE 3-4, whereas the rates of mineral loss in other skeletal regions did not differ between these APOE genotypes.

In both compounds the synperiplanar orientation of the O-CF(3) groups relative to the C=O double bond is preferred. If heated Ar/1 and Ar/2 mixtures are deposited as a matrix at 14 K, new bands appear in the matrix IR spectra which are assigned to the anti form of 1 and to the syn/anti form of 2.

The aim of this study was to correlate changes in bone mineral density (BMD) at different skeletal sites during the first 5 years after menopause and determine if forearm measurements can substitute for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the spine and hip. BMD was measured at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 5 years using Hologic 1000/W and 2000 densitometers in 2,016 perimenopausal women participating in a national cohort study.

Helix H-ferritin cDNA contains a 519-bp open reading frame (ORF) and predicts an iron-responsive element (IRE) at the 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR) of the ferritin mRNA. The deduced amino acid sequence revealed 86% similarity with Lymnaea stagnalis ferritin and about 70% similarity with vertebrate H-ferritin.

The neurotransmitter receptor anchoring protein gephyrin is encoded by a highly mosaic gene whose primary transcript is subject to extensive alternative splicing. Gephyrin mRNAs are widely expressed in various mammalian tissues, and gephyrin has been implicated in neuron-specific and general metabolic functions. Using a novel affinity isolation procedure, we report the identification of different gephyrin variants in various organs of the adult rat.

The average carbon isotope value (delta(13)C) of 63 samples of glycerol from over 30 different sources has been determined. The results indicate that it is possible to distinguish the glycerol obtained from the glycerides produced in plants following C-3 and C-4 carbon fixation pathways. The samples obtained from animal sources seem to reflect the composition of the material consumed, as well as that produced by sugar fermentation.
