We assessed adverse events in hospitalized patients receiving selected vesicant antibiotics or vasopressors administered through midline catheters or peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC). The rates of catheter-related bloodstream infections, thrombosis, and overall events were similar across the two groups, while occlusion was higher in the PICC group.

Introduction: There have been few empirical studies for diagnostic test accuracy of syphilis using a sequence of rapid tests in populations with low prevalence of syphilis such as pregnant women. Blood-culture overutilization is associated with increased cost and excessive antimicrobial use. We implemented an intervention in the adult intensive care unit (ICU), combining education based on the DISTRIBUTE algorithm and restriction to infectious diseases and ICU providers. Patients with severe refractory hypoxemic respiratory failure may benefit from extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for salvage therapy. The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic offered three high-volume independent ECMO programs at a large medical center the chance to collaborate to optimize ECMO care at the beginning of the pandemic in Spring 2020. COVID-19 disease has been a pandemic caused by a β-coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). A life-threatening multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS), secondary to SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, sharing common features with Kawasaki disease shock syndrome, staphylococcal/streptococcal shock syndrome, and macrophage activation syndrome in pediatric patients has been described. This study evaluated the impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) on immune activation during pregnancy in a Zambian cohort of HIV-exposed but uninfected children followed up from birth. Activated CD8+ T cells (CD38+ and HLA-DR+) were compared among HIV-uninfected (n = 95), cART experienced HIV-infected (n = 111), and cART-naive HIV-infected (n = 21) pregnant women. Immune activation was highest among HIV-infected/cART-naive women but decreased during pregnancy.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine if sequential deployment of a nurse-led Rapid Response Team (RRT) and an intensivist-led Medical Emergency Team (MET) for critically ill patients in the Emergency Department (ED) and acute care wards improved hospital-wide cardiac arrest rates.

Introduction: Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) plays an important role in the management of respiratory failure. However, since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, utilization of traditional face mask NIPPV has been curtailed in part due to risk of aerosolization of respiratory particles and subsequent health care worker exposure. Iron metabolism and the plant immune system are both critical for plant vigor in natural ecosystems and for reliable agricultural productivity. Mechanistic studies of plant iron home-ostasis and plant immunity have traditionally been carried out in isolation from each other; however, our growing understanding of both processes has uncovered significant connections. For example, iron plays a critical role in the generation of reactive oxygen intermediates during immunity and has been recently implicated as a critical factor for immune-initiated cell death via ferroptosis.
