The development of alloplastic resorbable materials can revolutionize the field of implantation technology in regenerative medicine. Additional opportunities to colonize the three-dimensionally (3D) printed constructs with the patient's own cells prior to implantation can improve the regeneration process but requires optimization of cultivation protocols. Human platelet lysate (hPL) has already proven to be a suitable replacement for fetal calf serum (FCS) in 2D and 3D cell cultures.

Methods: We conducted a prospective study to compare inflammatory markers in patients diagnosed with aseptic or septic prosthetic loosening.
Purpose: This retrospective follow-up study investigates whether cytochrome P450-2D6 (CYP2D6) genotype explains variability in plasma concentrations of psychotropic drugs in daily psychiatric practice.
Methods: The study population consisted of 62 hospitalised psychiatric patients genotyped for CYP2D6. Primary endpoint was the normalised plasma concentration ratio which was defined as the [measured concentration]/[mean therapeutic concentration] allowing comparison of plasma concentrations of different substrates.
Background: Telomerase activity (TA) indicates malignancy, but activated lymphocytes also express TA. Correlation between TA in thyroid tissues and fine-needle aspiration (FNA) samples and knowledge about TA in adjacent tissue are of importance.
Methods: The telomeric repeat amplification protocol assay followed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay detection was performed on 78 thyroid cases including 53 suspected malignancies, preoperative and perioperative FNA specimens, and adjacent tissue.
Background: Telomerase is a specific enzyme that appears to have a key role in cellular senescence and the progression of neoplastic tissue. High telomerase activity has been found in several cancers, but not in most normal and benign tissue. Little is known about the influence of telomerase on the abnormal growth associated with hyperparathyroidism.

A case of primary adenocarcinoma of distal ileum used as intussuscepted nipple valve and outlet from a right colonic reservoir is reported. The tumour was diagnosed 5.5 years after the patient was operated on with cystectomy and right colonic reservoir for a moderately differentiated, muscle-invasive transitional carcinoma of the bladder.

Two hundred thirty-three patients with an unstable trochanteric hip fracture were randomized prospectively for stabilization with a fixed angle blade plate or a compression hip screw. Twenty patients had the implant removed after the fracture was healed (average, 20.5 months; range, 12-42 months).

To examine the role of radical retropubic prostatectomy in clinically localised prostatic cancer we reviewed a series of 201 patients all of whom had undergone bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy. Frozen section showed metastatic pelvic lymph nodes in 13 cases and 6 cases were too locally advanced for operation; prostatectomy was done for the remaining 182. The pathological staging was based on examination of sections of the whole organ.

Laboratory studies disclosed high levels of anticardiolipin antibodies. Anticoagulant treatment restored circulation in the remaining leg and also normalized platelet levels.

Rectal examination was performed independently by a GP and by a urologist at the GP's surgery. Carcinoma of the prostate was suspected by one or both physicians in 45 cases, and subsequently confirmed by cytological investigation in 13 cases.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLaser Doppler flowmetry was used for pre- and intraoperative assessment of gastrointestinal blood flow and vascular damage in eight patients with late radiation injury of the gastrointestinal tract. The flowmeter recordings were compared with reference values previously obtained in unaffected tissue from corresponding gastrointestinal sites. Marked reduction of blood flow was demonstrated in macroscopic areas of radiation injury in all eight patients.

The grade of nuclear atypia was objectively assessed in 21 cases of non-invasive WHO II transitional cell bladder neoplasm. Measurements were performed by stage scanning absorbance cytophotometry, registering nuclear optical density, nuclear area, and the variability of these two factors, in 5 microns thick Feulgen-stained paraffin sections. The material was subgrouped into a 2- and a 2+ group according to the degree of histopathological atypia.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe WHO classification of urothelial bladder tumours is widely used, but does not seem to be entirely satisfactory. The main problem is the unhomogeneous WHO II group, and borderline cases in particular are difficult to evaluate histopathologically. Objective assessment of atypia would allow more reliable correlation between morphology and biological behaviour of the tumours to be made.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe grading of nuclear atypia has a great and well recognized value when predicting the malignancy of neoplastic processes. Although the basic criteria for the grading are generally agreed upon, in the individual case, the final judgement is to some extent still a matter of subjectivity, which naturally impairs reproducibility. The present paper describes a method for quantification of variability of nuclear size and Feulgen-stainability.
