Intervention accelerator to prevent and respond to abuse of older people: insights from key promising interventions.

Globally, abuse of older people (AOP) affects one in six individuals aged 60 years and older every year. Despite the widespread prevalence of AOP, evidence-based interventions for preventing and responding to this issue are insufficient. To address this gap, WHO proposed an initiative to accelerate the development of effective interventions for AOP across all country income levels.

Efficacy of subcutaneous sumatriptan in postcraniotomy pain and opioid consumption.

Objective: Traditional pain management pathways following craniotomy are predicated on opioids. However, narcotics can confound critical neurological examination, contribute to respiratory depression, lower the seizure threshold, and lead to medication habituation, dependence, and/or abuse. Alternative medications to better address postoperative pain while mitigating opioid-related adverse effects remain insufficiently studied.

Trigeminal nerve hemangioblastoma in the setting of undiagnosed von Hippel-Lindau disease: illustrative case.

Background: Von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) is an autosomal dominant tumor predisposition syndrome caused by mutations in the VHL gene. Patients with VHL are predisposed to developing numerous neoplasms, including central nervous system hemangioblastomas that typically arise within the cerebellum, brainstem, or spinal cord. The authors present the unusual case of a 69-year-old patient with a hemangioblastoma of the trigeminal nerve as his initial presentation of VHL.

Evaluation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Essentials for Parenting Toddlers and Preschoolers on parent behavioral outcomes.

Background: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's web-based behavioral parent training (BPT) program, Essentials for Parenting Toddlers and Preschoolers (EfP), uses a psychoeducational approach to promote positive parenting and address common parenting challenges. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of EfP on parenting behavior and whether implementation format impacted behavioral outcomes.

Methods: A sample of 200 parents of 2- to 4-year-old children were recruited via Internet advertising.

Review of Policies and Practices to Prevent Technology-Facilitated Child Sexual Abuse Within Youth-Serving Organizations in the United States.

Technology-facilitated child sexual abuse (TF-CSA), or child sexual abuse that occurs online or through electronic communication, is a preventable public health problem that can be addressed within youth-serving organizations (YSOs). This study is a review of a purposive sample of organizational policies and practices designed to prevent TF-CSA collected from 13 national and local YSOs in the United States. Documents were coded to identify practices to prevent TF-CSA related to YSO activities or YSO staff, volunteers, or participants.

Embedding textile capacitive sensing into smart wearables as a versatile solution for human motion capturing.

This work presents a novel and versatile approach to employ textile capacitive sensing as an effective solution for capturing human body movement through fashionable and everyday-life garments. Conductive textile patches are utilized for sensing the movement, working without the need for strain or direct body contact, wherefore the patches can sense only from their deformation within the garment. This principle allows the sensing area to be decoupled from the wearer's body for improved wearing comfort and more pleasant integration.

Waste to resource recovery at a marina: Empirical evidence of upstream and downstream innovation for circularity.

In 2021, an Australian research centre partnered with a regional marina and shipyard where 90 businesses build, refit, and maintain boats in premium condition. Tenants and owners grapple with environmental waste management issues. Since there is a gap in applying action research but numerous calls to co-produce solutions and participate in translating ideas into practice, action research was used in this case study involving upstream and downstream innovation for circularity.

National trends in the treatment of adult diffuse midline gliomas: a rare clinical scenario.

Purpose: Diffuse midline gliomas (DMG) include all midline gliomas with a point mutation to the histone H3 gene resulting in the substitution of a lysine with a methionine (K27M). These tumors are classified as World Health Organization grade 4 with a mean survival between 9- and 19-months following diagnosis. There is currently no standard of care for DMG, and palliative radiation therapy has been proven to only extend survival by months.

Mechanistic insights into DNA damage recognition and checkpoint control in plants.

The plant DNA damage response (DDR) pathway safeguards genomic integrity by rapid recognition and repair of DNA lesions that, if unrepaired, may cause genome instability. Most frequently, DNA repair goes hand in hand with a transient cell cycle arrest, which allows cells to repair the DNA lesions before engaging in a mitotic event, but consequently also affects plant growth and yield. Through the identification of DDR proteins and cell cycle regulators that react to DNA double-strand breaks or replication defects, it has become clear that these proteins and regulators form highly interconnected networks.

Detection of Multiple HPV Types in Liquid Biopsies of Cervical Neoplasia.

Background: More than 95% of cervical cancers and their precancerous lesions are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Cell-free (cf) HPV DNA detection in blood samples may serve as a monitoring tool for cervical cancer.

Methods: In our methodological study, an HPV panel for simultaneous detection of 24 types using mass spectrometry-based analysis was developed for liquid biopsy approaches and tested on HPV positive cell lines, plasmid controls, and cervical high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) in positive smear samples (n = 52).

The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) is a nationally-representative, telephone survey for non-institutionalized adults in the United States. To determine the prevalence and factors of intimate partner psychological aggression and physical violence and sexual violence by any perpetrator against older adults, we analyzed NISVS 2016/2017 data ( = 10,171, aged ≥ 60 years).

Background And Objectives: Folic acid is an important supplement to take for women with epilepsy on antiseizure medications (ASMs). Determination of baseline counseling given to women with epilepsy and the association with folic acid being recommended were evaluated. Factors surrounding the association were reviewed.

Development of the NOGGO GIS v1 Assay, a Comprehensive Hybrid-Capture-Based NGS Assay for Therapeutic Stratification of Homologous Repair Deficiency Driven Tumors and Clinical Validation.

The worldwide approval of the combination maintenance therapy of olaparib and bevacizumab in advanced high-grade serous ovarian cancer requires complex molecular diagnostic assays that are sufficiently robust for the routine detection of driver mutations in homologous recombination repair (HRR) genes and genomic instability (GI), employing formalin-fixed (FFPE) paraffin-embedded tumor samples without matched normal tissue. We therefore established a DNA-based hybrid capture NGS assay and an associated bioinformatic pipeline that fulfils our institution's specific needs. The assay´s target regions cover the full exonic territory of relevant cancer-related genes and HRR genes and more than 20,000 evenly distributed single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci to allow for the detection of genome-wide allele specific copy number alterations (CNA).

High time for an intervention accelerator to prevent abuse of older people.

Currently, there are no evidence-based interventions to prevent and respond to abuse of older people. We propose to create, within the Decade of Healthy Ageing 2021–2030, an intervention accelerator to speed up the development of effective interventions for abuse of older people in community and institutional settings within low-, middle- and high-income countries.

A comparative study on culture-specific and cross-cultural aspects of intercultural relations in Hungary, Serbia, Czech Republic, and Germany.

The ability, will, and belief that it is possible to deal effectively with members of other cultural/ethnic groups are still gaining importance all over the world. However, the majority of studies on intercultural relations focus on Western Europe and the USA, applying constructs and theories that replicate a western-centered worldview. As a consequence, it is unclear whether established measures for intergroup attitudes and intercultural competence may be applied in Eastern European countries and to what extent they display comparable ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

Prioritizing Hormone Therapy Over Vigabatrin as the First Treatment for Infantile Spasms: A Quality Improvement Initiative.

Background And Objectives: Infantile spasms (IS) are early childhood seizures with potentially devastating consequences. Standard therapies (adrenocorticotropic hormone [ACTH], high-dose prednisolone, and vigabatrin) are strongly recommended as the first treatment for IS. Although this recommendation comes without preference for one standard therapy over another, early remission rates are higher with hormone therapy (ACTH and high-dose prednisolone) when compared with vigabatrin.

Combined Liquid Biopsy Methylation Analysis of CADM1 and MAL in Cervical Cancer Patients.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, which is associated in >95% with a high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Methylation of specific genes has been closely associated with the progress of cervical high-grade dysplastic lesions to invasive carcinomas. Therefore, DNA methylation has been proposed as a triage for women infected with high-risk HPV.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is an infectious carcinogenic agent. Nearly all cervical cancers are positive for one of the high-risk HPV subtypes. Although the introduction of the HPV vaccines in many countries have shown tremendous positive effects on the incidence of both cervical intraepithelial lesions (CIN) and invasive cancer, the large majority of females worldwide are still not vaccinated.
