Characterization of inflammation in chronic rhinosinusitis with (CRSwNP) and without nasal polyps (CRSsNP) is an ongoing research process. To overcome limitations of current cytologic techniques, we investigated whether immunofluorescence multiplex image cytometry could quantify intact neutrophils, eosinophils, and other immune cells in solid upper airway mucosa. We used a four-channel immunofluorescence-microscopy technique for the simultaneous detection of the leukocyte marker CD45, the neutrophil marker myeloperoxidase, two eosinophil markers, i.

Methods: Segmented computed tomography cross-sectional areas of the nasal airway anterior (CT-CSA) and posterior to the piriform aperture (at the level of the head of the inferior turbinate; CT-CSA) were compared between patients with nasal obstruction (cases) and trauma controls.
Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) are highly heterogeneous tumors. In the harsh tumor microenvironment (TME), metabolic reprogramming and mitochondrial dysfunction may lead to immunosuppressive phenotypes. Aerobic glycolysis is needed for the activation of cytotoxic T-cells and the absence of glucose may hamper the full effector functions of cytotoxic T-cells.

Current literature regarding survival and treatment outcome of SBRT in patients with pulmonary oligometastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is limited. Additionally, most of the published studies include metastatic lesions deriving also from primaries with histologies other than SCC when investigating the outcome of SBRT. The aim of the present retrospective study is to explore local control (LC) of treated metastases, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) of exclusively pulmonary oligometastatic HNSCC-patients treated with SBRT.

Despite intensity modulation, the desired radiation-induced effects observed in HNSCC may also be observed as side effects in healthy tissue, e.g.

Considering regulatory working hour constraints, we investigated whether a two-staged reconstructive approach with temporary defect coverage by an artificial tissue substitute would be feasible. HNC patients underwent either immediate or delayed reconstruction after tumor resection.

In our study we aimed to investigate the detection of respiratory viruses in middle ear effusions (MEE) as well as the association with local bacteria, respiratory viruses in the nasopharynx and cellular immune response of children with COME.
Methods: This 2017-2019 cross-sectional study included 69 children aged 2-6 undergoing myringotomy for COME.
In head and neck oncology, surgical treatment frequently results in microvascular reconstruction. Oncologic resection followed by immediate reconstruction is often associated with prolonged working and surgical duration, challenging a surgeon's concentration level and potentially worsening patient outcome. To improve the surgeon's performance and to reduce risk of potential complications, we implemented a two-stage procedure in patients with head and neck cancer.

Until now, preserving structure and viability for several days has been difficult. The aim of this study was to optimize cultivation conditions for HNC SC and analyze the added effects of platelet rich fibrin (PRF) on these conditions.

These results were compared with the findings of the OSA-18 questionnaire.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of surgically treated patients with incident HNC with and without perioperative blood transfusion between 2008 and 2019 at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Medical University of Innsbruck, according to the department's clinical Head and Neck Tumor Registry.
Results: Of the 590 patients included, perioperative transfusions were administered in 6.
Unfavorable clinical outcomes mean that cancer researchers must attempt to develop novel therapeutic strategies to overcome therapeutic resistance in patients with HNSCC. Recently, ferroptosis was shown to be a promising pathway possessing druggable targets, such as xCT (SLC7A11). Unfortunately, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying the susceptibility of HNSCC cells to ferroptosis.

In a hospital-based case-control study, we compared cross-sectional areas of the nasal cavities anterior to the piriform aperture determined by computed tomography (CT-CSA) in patients with nasal obstruction (cases) and unselected patients with trauma unrelated to the head and face (controls).
Methods: CT-CSA could be reproducibly identified at angles of 0, 30°, 60°, and 90° to the nasal floor approximately perpendicular to the arcuate direction of nasal airflow using bony landmarks.
Head and neck cancer etiology and architecture is quite diverse and complex, impeding the prediction whether a patient could respond to a particular cancer immunotherapy or combination treatment. A concomitantly arising caveat is obviously the translation from pre-clinical, cell based in vitro systems as well as syngeneic murine tumor models towards the heterogeneous architecture of the human tumor ecosystems. To bridge this gap, we have established and employed a patient-derived HNSCC (head and neck squamous cell carcinoma) slice culturing system to assess immunomodulatory effects as well as permissivity and oncolytic virus (OV) action.

With their potential to break through tumor immunoresistance, OV might be a future combination treatment option in patients with advanced head and neck cancer (HNC). Modes of action, biological modifications, handling and side effects of OV for treatment of HNC are reviewed.

We reported the functional outcomes of HNC patients using the HNC-Functional InTegrity (FIT) Scales, which is a validated tool for the rapid clinical assessment of functional status based on observable clinical criteria. Patients with newly diagnosed HNC treated at the Medical University of Innsbruck between 2008 and 2020 were consecutively included, and their status in the six functional domains of food-intake, breathing, speech, pain, mood, and neck and shoulder mobility was scored by the treating physician at oncological follow-up visits on a scale from 0 (loss of function) to 4 (full function).

Cochlear implantation is a standard treatment option due to expanding indications. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) has become a widespread diagnostic tool. Therefore, an increased number of cochlear implant (CI) users are undergoing cMRI scans.

EMT often correlates with invasion and an increased cell migration potential by losing cellular polarity and cell-cell junctions. It is mainly induced by tumor-microenvironment factors, such as TGF-beta 1 and IL-6, which activate the increased expression of the EMT-transcription factor (TF) Slug.
