Computer-Based Instruction (CBI) has been gaining increasing popularity in the health professions and especially in dental education, but its development is seldom problem-free. This paper describes a longitudinal study of endodontic simulations for senior dental students which employ latent image, computer-assisted video interactive (CAVI), and computer text instruction (CTI). Particular attention is devoted to developmental problems, use of time and manpower, and student performance on and reaction to the pilot test.

The major volatile component in the extract of the female sex pheromone gland ofScrobipalpa heliopa was shown to be (E)-3-tridecen-1-ol acetate (V). The identification was based on mass spectral analyses, comparison of retention times with those of synthetic compounds on polar, nonpolar, and liquid crystal gas chromatographic columns and microchemical studies. The latter included hydrolysis and reacetylation, and mass spectral studies of the derivatives formed by epoxidation and methoxymercuration-demercuration.

With the virtual explosion of biomedical information, the medical educator regularly faces a quandary regarding how much to include in the medical curriculum. Opinions differ regarding how much of the available information on a particular topic should be presented in a medical school lecture. To understand better the effect of lecture information density on learning by medical students, one of the authors gave a basic clinical lecture only or clinical lectures with varying amounts of semirelated information.

Grey scale ultrasound provides a valuable non-invasive method of investigating the kidneys. It is usually a complementary examination to intravenous urography. When the ultrasonic findings are considered along with the clinical history, the results of the urogram and the results of any other relevant investigations then an accurate diagnosis can often be made.

The aim of this study was to follow the career development of all 103 former students of the BSc (Hons) degree in human biology at the University of Surrey who also took the nursing option leading to qualification as SRN, at St George's School of Nursing, London. These individuals qualified between 1970 and 1980. A postal questionnaire was used and a 97% response was obtained.

Rhodopseudomonas acidophila strain 7050 achieved balance growth when provided with either asparagine or glutamine as nitrogen source. Under these growth conditions R. acidophila synthesized a mixed amidase which exhibited similar activity (223--422 nmol/min .

An integrated computer system with a central data-base and decision-making capabilities is the basis of an investigation of a computerized alerting program that rapidly detects, analyzes, and generates diagnostic interpretations and treatment protocols for life-threatening laboratory abnormalities. Preliminary study data suggests that use of the alerting program to promptly notify physicians of abnormal laboratory values results in more prompt and correct treatment of patients.

The free fatty acid and phospholipid composition of 5 psychrotrophic marine Pseudomonas spp. have been determined in chemostat culture with glucose as the limiting substrate over the range 0--20 degrees C. The predominant fatty acid present in all the isolates was hexadecenoic acid (C 16:1) together with lesser quantities of octadecenoic acid (C 18:1) whilst none contained acids with chain lengths exceeding 18 carbon atoms.

At dissolved oxygen tensions of 15 mmHg (2 kPa) and below, nitrate-limited continuous cultures of Klebsiella K312 synthesized nitrate reductase (NR) and nitrite reductase (NiR) and excreted ammonia. Under anaerobic conditions over 60% of the nitrate-nitrogen utilized was excreted as ammonia. In contrast, carbon-limited cultures excreted nitrite at dissolved oxygen tensions of 15 mmHg or below and synthesized NR but not NiR.

Rhodopseudomonas acidophila strain 7050 assimilated ammonia via a constitutive glutamine synthetase/glutamate synthase enzyme system. Glutamine synthetase had a Km for NH+4 of 0.38 mM whilst the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide linked glutamate synthase had a Km for glutamine of 0.

The extent of migration of plasticizer from haemodialysis lines into saline and plasma has been examined and a number of different types of tubing have been compared. A model system designed to simulate in vivo haemodialysis was evolved. The method uses a continuous cyclohexane extraction in order to mimic uptake of plasticizer by body tissues.
