With the aim of obtaining improved molecular scaffolds for F binding to use in PET imaging, gallium(III) and iron(III) complexes with a macrocyclic -phosphinate chelator have been synthesized and their properties, including their fluoride binding ability, investigated. Reaction of Bn-tacn (1-benzyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) with paraformaldehyde and PhP(OR) (R = Me or Et) in refluxing THF, followed by acid hydrolysis, yields the macrocyclic (phosphinic acid) derivative, H(Bn-NODP) (1-benzyl-4,7-phenylphosphinic acid-1,4,7-triazacyclononane), which is isolated as its protonated form, H(Bn-NODP)·2HCl·4HO, at low pH (HCl), its disodium salt, Na(Bn-NODP)·5HO at pH 12 (NaOH), or the neutral H(Bn-NODP) under mildly basic conditions (EtN). A crystal structure of H(Bn-NODP)·2HCl·HO confirmed the ligand's identity.

Several families of neogastropod mollusks independently evolved the ability to drill through mineralized prey skeletons using their own mineralized feeding teeth, sometimes with shell-softening chemical agents produced by an organ in the foot. Teeth with more durable tooth shapes should extend their use and improve predator performance, but past studies have described only the cusped-side of teeth, mostly overlooking morphologies related to functional interactions between teeth. Here, we describe the three-dimensional morphology of the central drilling tooth (rachidian) from four species of the neogastropod family Muricidae using synchrotron tomographic microscopy and assemble a three-dimensional model of a multitooth series in drilling position for two of them to investigate their dynamic form.

Electronic cigarette (Ecig) use has become more common, gaining increasing acceptance as a safer alternative to tobacco smoking. However, the 2019 outbreak of Ecig and Vaping-Associated Lung Injury (EVALI) alerted the community to the potential for incorporation of deleterious ingredients such as vitamin E acetate into products without adequate safety testing. Previous work has shown that different sensory channels are prioritized across the life course, with children preferentially responding to auditory information. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether the mechanism that drives this auditory dominance in children occurs at the level of encoding (overshadowing) or when the information is integrated to form a response (response competition). Given that response competition is dependent on a modality integration attempt, a combination of stimuli that could not be integrated was used so that if children's auditory dominance persisted, this would provide evidence for the overshadowing over the response competition mechanism.

People with a depressed mood tend to perform poorly on executive function tasks, which require much of the prefrontal cortex (PFC), an area of the brain which has also been shown to be hypo-active in this population.
