Localization of 3H-dihydrotestosterone in the pituitary gland of the rhesus monkey.

The uptake and retention of radiolabelled dihydrotestosterone by the pituitary gland was examined in the rhesus monkey. Two animals were given an intravenous injection of 1.0 microgram/kg 3H-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) alone while one monkey received both the labelled androgen and 100 micrograms/kg of unlabelled steroid.

Postnatal development of the ventral prostate gland in normal versus protein-calorie malnourished rats.

The ultrastructure of the postnatal development of the secretory cells within the ventral prostate gland was studied in the protein-calorie malnourished rat. Twenty-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either a low protein diet (LPD) containing 8% protein in the form of vitamin free casein or a standard laboratory diet (SLD) containing 27% protein. Animals maintained on the LPD and SLD were sacrificed every 7 days, beginning on Day 27 and ending on Day 55.

Early response of the dopaminergic tuberoinfundibular neurons to anterior pituitary homografts.

Two anterior pituitary homografts were inserted under the left kidney capsule of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (experimental rats). Sham-treated rats were exposed to identical surgical manipulations, but no tissue was inserted under the kidney capsule. The concentrations of dopamine (DA) and noradrenaline (NA) were determined in the median eminence, intermedioposterior pituitary and telencephalon by a radioisotope-enzyme technique.

Morphology of the mammotrophs and gonadotrophs in the anterior pituitary gland of rats with protein-calorie malnutrition.

The structure of the anterior pituitary gland of rats with protein-calorie malnutrition was studied at the light and electron microscopic levels. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a low-protein diet from 20 to 50 days of age. The hypophyses from these animals, along with those from age-matched controls, were then removed and fixed for light microscopic immunocytochemical analyses, using anti-rat PRL or anti-ovine LH beta serum, or for routine ultrastructural study.

Immobilization of coastal grizzly bears with etorphine hydrochloride.

Seventeen coastal grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) from southwestern British Columbia were captured and immobilized a total of 27 times with etorphine hydrochloride (M99). Effective dosages administered ranged from 0.011 to 0.

Growth patterns and hormonal profile of male rats with protein-calorie malnutrition.

A condition of protein-calorie malnutrition was precipitated in young Sprague-Dawley male rats at 20 days of age using an 8% low protein diet (LPD). At five-day intervals for up to 50 days of age, the rats were studied to determine the effect of an LPD on the reproductive axis of the endocrine system. Daily monitoring of the body weight, as well as the consumption of food, kilocalories, and protein was conducted.

Significance of Aspergillus species isolated from respiratory secretions in the diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis.

To determine the significance of Aspergillus species isolated from sputum or other respiratory secretions with respect to the diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, the clinical records and radiographs of all patients whose respiratory secretion cultures yielded an Aspergillus species between 1972 and 1978 were reviewed. Castrated adult male hamsters and castrated adult female rats were injected with either 0.2 microgram (hamsters) or 0.5 microgram (rats) of 3H-dihydrotestosterone (107 Ci/mmole)/100 grams body weight and killed 1 1/2 h later.

Epididymal androgen binding protein in protein-calorie malnourished rats.

Androgen binding protein (ABP) was measured at five-day intervals from 20 to 50 days of age in the epididymides of rats fed a low protein diet. The results were compared to findings made in age-matched controls fed a standard laboratory diet. ABP was consistently lower in the caputs of the malnourished rats throughout the entire study.

Costs in a clinical pharmacological laboratory.

As a measure of the efficiency of service provided to the Groote Schuur group of hospitals by the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, certain costs were analaysed. The approximate annual cost of routine analytical work was R40 000 $45 000 or 22 000 pounds). The average cost per assy was R9,50 ($11,30 or 5,50 pounds).

The significance of concordance in mammographic interpretations.

Twenty-eight women participating in a screening program had a breast cancer diagnosed subsequent to the report of a negative mammogram which was read by only one of a group of radiologists. Fourteen occurred prior to a scheduled routine screening visit (interval cancers) and 14 were detected during such an examination. The negative mammograms from the 28 cancer patients, together with those from 120 women without cancer (controls) were independently reviewed by each member of a panel of three radiologists.

Intercellular junctions in the rhesus monkey pars distalis.

Four rhesus monkey pituitary glands were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Three types of intercellular junctions, desmosomes, hemidesmosomes and zonula adherens-type junctions, were observed between adjacent granular cells, folliculo-stellate cells, and joining a folliculo-stellate cell with a granular cell. Demosomes were most commonly observed between granular cells while the zonula adherens-type junctions were generally found between the folliculo-stellate cells.

An autoradiographic and immunocytochemical study of the neonatal rat pituitary gland.

Two-day-old female rats were injected with 5 nmole/kg of 6,7-3H-11 beta-methoxy-17-ethylestradiol (R 2858 = moxestrol) and killed one hour later. The animals were decapitated and, the pituitary glands were removed, mounted on tissue holders and frozen in liquified propane. The tissue was then processed for autoradiography according to the thaw-mount technique.

Bone stress: a radionuclide imaging perspective.

Thirty-five college athletes with lower leg pain underwent radiography and radionuclide studies to rule out a stress fracture. Their asymptomatic extremities and 13 pain-free athletes served as controls. Four main patterns were observed: (a) sharply marginated scintigraphic abnormalities and positive radiographs; (b) sharply marginated scintigraphic abnormalities and negative radiographs; (c) ill-defined scintigraphic abnormalities and negative radiographs; and (d) negative radionuclide images and negative radiographs.

Effects of dopamine, norepinephrine and 5-hydroxytryptamine on the carotid body of the dog.

The effects of bolus intracarotid (IC) infusions of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on activity in single or few-fiber carotid chemoreceptor afferent nerve preparations were studied in pentobarbital anesthetized dogs. In addition, the effects of intravenous (IV) infusions of DA were also assessed. IC injections of DA (10 microgram) and (5-HT) (1 microgram) consistently produced a burst of intense activity followed by a period of inhibition.

Normal sellar variations in frontal tomograms.

Frontal tomograms of 100 normal sellae were examined. The sellar floor was usually flat or had a smooth central depression of less than 2 mm. Six per cent had a marked central depression.

Evidence for the autoregulation of hormone secretion by prolactin.

The cells from the 2B8 clonal strain of pituitary cells which previously have been reported to produce only PRL were incubated with varying amounts of ovine PRL (oPRL) ranging from 0.01--1000 ng/ml. After 1 h, significantly less PRL was measured in culture media from cells incubated with all doses of oPRL employed.

Elevation of serum prolactin levels after the inhibition of serotonin uptake.

Although earlier investigators showed that serotonin produced an elevation in serum PRL, recent studies indicate that serotonergic mechanisms are not of importance, at least in older adult animals, in the tonic regulation of serum PRL levels. As the activity of neuronal pathways may vary in activity at different chronological ages, the present study was undertaken to further evaluate the role of serotonergic pathways in the regulation of serum PRL levels. During the course of the study, animals in two different weight ranges were studied.

Casein and alpha-lactalbumin detection in breast cancer cells by immunocytochemistry.

Casein and alpha-lactalbumin are characteristic proteins produced by normal mammary cells under hormonal stimulation. Specific antisera were used to immunochemically stain for these two proteins in the unstimulated R3230AC transplantable rat mammary tumor as well as in normal lactating rat mammary tissue. Specific staining was observed in the lactating rat alveolar epithelial cells and in the cells lining the intraalveolar ducts with both antisera.

Immunocytological localization of LH, FSH, TSH and their subunits in the pituitary of normal and anencephalic human fetuses.

Immunostaining with antisera to oLH, hCG, hLH, pLHbeta, hFSH, hFSHbeta, hTSHalpha and bTSH was used to delineate the gonadotropic and thyrotropic cells of the human fetal anterior pituitary. Hypophyses from 29 normal fetuses, 3 newborn infants, and 5 totally ancencephalic fetuses were used. Several controls to check for the specificty of the immunocytological reaction were made.
