Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is characterized by excruciating facial pain usually caused by neurovascular compression of the trigeminal nerve roots. TN can be treated medically or invasively. Microvascular decompression is the procedure of choice and usually results in complete symptom relief.

Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state was less impacted due to the temperate climate preventing the spread of the vector. This study investigated the prevalence and etiology of congenital microcephaly in RS in two different periods.

Method: An experience report about the conduction of a university extension course with eight participants, developed at a public university in southern Brazil. It was a face-to-face course in November 2019.
Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the causes of congenital microcephaly in Rio Grande do Sul, a state in southern Brazil, where no ZIKV outbreak was detected, from December 2015 to December 2016, which was the period when ZIKV infection was at its peak in northeast Brazil.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study where all notifications of congenital microcephaly in the state of Rio Grande do Sul were included for analysis. Evaluation of cases followed the guidelines of the Brazilian Ministry of Health.
Objective: To characterize a sample of Brazilian patients with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) diagnosed between 1992 and 2011.
Methods: In this retrospective study, patients were identified through a national reference laboratory for the diagnosis of MSUD and through contact with other medical genetics services across Brazil. Data were collected by means of a chart review.
Mucopolysaccharidosis VI (MPS VI) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by deficient activity of Arylsulphatase B (ARSB). The disease is progressive and multisystemic, usually leading to death in the first decades of life. In addition to supportive management, specific treatments for MPS VI are the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and enzyme replacement therapy (ERT).

Life expectancy is measured in months after successful treatment, and in days to weeks with a persistent fistula.

In this calibration method, the FTsensor is rigidly connected to a FP and force/torque data are synchronously recorded while a dynamic functional loading procedure is applied by the researcher. Based on these data an accurate calibration matrix for the FTsensor can easily be obtained via least-squares optimization.

Patients exhibit multisystemic signs and symptoms in a chronic and progressive manner, especially with changes in the skeleton, cardiopulmonary system, cornea, skin, liver, spleen and meninges. Patients usually have normal intelligence.

Enzyme replacement therapy reduces the storage of these substances in the lysosomes. Oxidative stress is related to the pathophysiology of many disorders, including inborn errors of metabolism.

Aim: To compare the diagnostic capability of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tumour nodules and their effect on patient management.
Methods: A total of 28 patients (25 male, 3 female, mean age 67 +/- 10.8 years) with biopsy-proven HCC were investigated with 64-row MDCT (slice 3 mm native, arterial and portal-venous phase, 120 mL Iomeprol, 4 mL/s, delay by bolus trigger) and MRI (T1fs fl2d TE/TR 2.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical results, complications, and secondary interventions during long-term follow-up after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) and to investigate the impact of endoleak sizes on aneurysm shrinkage. From 1997 to March 2007, 127 patients (12 female, 115 male; age, 73.0 +/- 7.

Objective: Our objective was to identify and characterize novel mutations in the POMC gene found in patients with early-onset obesity.
Design And Patients: The POMC gene was screened in 500 patients with severe early-onset obesity.
The aim of this study was to analyze the technical results, the extraosseous cement leakages, and the complications in our first 500 vertebroplasty procedures. Patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures or osteolytic lesions caused by malignant tumors were treated with CT-guided vertebroplasty. The technical results were documented with CT, and the extraosseous cement leakages and periinterventional clinical complications were analyzed as well as secondary fractures during follow-up.

Colorectal cancer is an ideal opportunity for screening programs because of its long period of development. Our study investigated the applicability of iridology as an alternative screening method for colorectal cancer.

This approach proved to be a safe and efficient procedure in two patients. The procedure may be applicable in situations where endoscopic attempts fail.

Conclusions: Prognosis depends on local response, Okuda score, alpha-fetoprotein level, and tumor size and is independent of the presence of portal venous thrombosis.

The purpose of this study was to correlate histopathological with CT findings in patients suffering from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) eligible for orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), with a special focus on the antitumoral effect of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) therapy. A total of 42 consecutive patients suffering from HCC had been treated prior to OLT by means of TACE. TACE was carried out with a mixture of Lipiodol (10-20 ml) and mitomycin C (max.

The purpose of this study was to simplify a fluoroscopy guided gastrostomy technique using pull-type tubes which are traditionally introduced with gastroscopic assistance. The stomach was transorally probed with a 5-Fr catheter and a guidewire. A second access was performed percutaneously through the anterior abdominal and gastric wall using an 8-Fr sheath and an 8-Fr guiding catheter.
