Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a prevalent childhood cancer with high cure rate, but poses a significant medical challenge in adults and relapsed patients. Philadelphia-like acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph-like ALL) is a high-risk subtype, with approximately half of cases characterized by overexpression and frequent concomitant deletions. To address the need for efficient, rapid, and cost-effective detection of alterations, we developed a novel RT-qPCR technique combining SYBR Green and highresolution melting analysis on a single plate.

Nowadays there is an increasing demand for assisted reproductive technologies due to the growth of infertility problems. Naturally, fertilization occurs in the oviduct, where the oviductal epithelial cells (OECs) secrete many molecules that affect the embryo's metabolism and protect it from oxidative stress. When the OECs are grown in 3D culture systems, they maintain a great part of their functional characteristics, making them an excellent model for fertilization (IVF) studies.

Controlling transgene expression through an externally administered inductor is envisioned as a potent strategy to improve safety and efficacy of gene therapy approaches. Generally, inducible ON systems require a chimeric transcription factor (transactivator) that becomes activated by an inductor, which is not optimal for clinical translation due to their toxicity. We generated previously the first all-in-one, transactivator-free, doxycycline (Dox)-responsive (Lent-On-Plus or LOP) lentiviral vectors (LVs) able to control transgene expression in human stem cells.

While human in vitro embryo production is generally performed individually, animal models have shown that culturing embryos in groups improves blastocyst yield and quality. Paracrine embryotrophins could be responsible for this improved embryo development, but their identity remains largely unknown. We hypothesize that supplementation of embryotrophic proteins to a culture medium could be the key to improve individual embryo production.

Introduction: Controversy exists regarding the indication of beta-blockers (BB) in different scenarios in patients with cardiovascular disease. We sought to evaluate the effect of BB on survival and heart failure (HF) hospitalizations in a sample of pacemaker-dependent patients after AV node ablation to control ventricular rate for atrial tachyarrhythmias.

Methods: A retrospective study including consecutive patients that underwent AV node ablation was conducted in a single center between 2011 and 2019.

The European brown trout, Salmo trutta, is a cold-adapted fish reported as a Least Concern species in the IUCN Red List. This species colonized new territories from southern refuges during the last glacial melting, but during the 20th century suffered from anthropic impacts on its habitats. The long-time survival of the species relies on the genetic diversity within and among populations.

(Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a species native to East Asia, has been especially devastating in the Mediterranean region and Catalonia, northeast Spain, where is an essential component of the natural forest. As an invasive species, the lack of biotic mortality factors in the arrival region has been one of the main factors allowing its expansion. Therefore, this study aimed to collect and identify possible indigenous natural enemies adapting to the new species in the boxwood of the southwest Mediterranean region.

In this study, we quantified the three key biological processes, growth, recruitment, and dispersal pattern, which are necessary for a better understanding of the population dynamics of the blue and red shrimp Aristeus antennatus. This marine exploited crustacean shows sex-related distribution along the water column, being females predominate in the middle slope. The present study attempts to fill the existing gap in the females’ genetic demography, as scarce knowledge is available despite being the most abundant sex in catches.

In this work, consideration is given to an aerodynamic concept to boost the filtration in face masks of airborne hygroscopic particles such as those caused by an infected person when coughs or sneezes. Nowadays, increasing the filtration efficiency of face masks implies either increasing the number of crisscrossing fiber layers or decreasing the equivalent hydraulic diameter of the pore, however, both measures are in clear detriment of its breathability. Here, a novel strategy is proposed in which the filtration of an airborne particle is boosted by increasing its diameter.

Mounting evidence from scientific community seems to suggest that COVID-19 virus can potentially spread by airborne transmission. As a result, methods and techniques for preventing environmental contagious, such as ventilation or air filtration have been proposed. Here, it is investigated the effect of moisturization on airborne COVID-19 transmission from a mechanical point of view in which comparatively large water droplets promote the growth -by collision and coalescence, of suspended airborne COVID-19 and then accelerating its gravitational settling.

The population biology of the deep-sea shrimp , as with other exploited demersal species, is usually studied using data from fishery statistics. Such statistical analyses have shown female-biased sex ratios during the spawning season in this species. Because the abundance of males increases at greater depths that are not exploited by fisheries (virgin grounds), knowledge on their recruitment is limited.

Nearly half of the human genome is made of transposable elements (TEs) whose activity continues to impact its structure and function. Among them, Long INterspersed Element class 1 (LINE-1 or L1) elements are the only autonomously active TEs in humans. L1s are expressed and mobilized in different cancers, generating mutagenic insertions that could affect tumor malignancy.

The cell culture-based retrotransposition reporter assay has been (and is) an essential tool for the study of vertebrate Long INterspersed Elements (LINEs). Developed more than 20 years ago, this assay has been instrumental in characterizing the role of LINE-encoded proteins in retrotransposition, understanding how ribonucleoprotein particles are formed, how host factors regulate LINE mobilization, etc. Moreover, variations of the conventional assay have been developed to investigate the biology of other currently active human retrotransposons, such as Alu and SVA.

The blue and red shrimp Aristeus antennatus is a demersal marine species harvested by bottom trawling in the Mediterranean Sea, the adjacent Atlantic Ocean (AO) waters, and the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean (IO). As it is considered to be a priority species for sustainable fishing, identification of its genetic stocks and the connectivity between them is essential. Using 12 microsatellite loci we detected at least four genetic stocks distributed in the Western Mediterranean (WM), Eastern Mediterranean (EM), AO, and IO and signals for a possible fifth stock in the Alborán Sea.

Epigenetic silencing defends against LINE-1 (L1) retrotransposition in mammalian cells. However, the mechanisms that repress young L1 families and how L1 escapes to cause somatic genome mosaicism in the brain remain unclear. Here we report that a conserved Yin Yang 1 (YY1) transcription factor binding site mediates L1 promoter DNA methylation in pluripotent and differentiated cells.
