In the rapidly evolving field of structured light, self-torque has been recently defined as an intrinsic property of light beams carrying time-dependent orbital angular momentum. In particular, extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) beams with self-torque, exhibiting a topological charge that continuously varies on the subfemtosecond time scale, are naturally produced in high-order harmonic generation (HHG) when driven by two time-delayed intense infrared vortex beams with different topological charges. Until now, the polarization state of such EUV beams carrying self-torque has been restricted to linear states due to the drastic reduction in the harmonic up-conversion efficiency with increasing the ellipticity of the driving field.

Ir(III) and Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes are promising photosensitizers (PSs) for photodynamic therapy (PDT) due to their outstanding photophysical properties. Herein, one series of cyclometallated Ir(III) complexes and two series of Ru(II) polypyridyl derivatives bearing three different thiazolyl-β-carboline N^N' ligands have been synthesized, aiming to evaluate the impact of the different metal fragments ([Ir(C^N)] or [Ru(N^N)]) and N^N' ligands on the photophysical and biological properties. All the compounds exhibit remarkable photostability under blue-light irradiation and are emissive (605 < λ < 720 nm), with the Ru(II) derivatives displaying higher photoluminescence quantum yields and longer excited state lifetimes.

Bidimensional spectroelectrochemistry (Bidim-SEC) is an instrumental technique that provides UV/vis absorption information on electrochemical processes from two different points of view, using concomitantly a parallel and a normal optical configuration. The parallel configuration provides information about chemical species present in the diffusion layer, meanwhile the normal arrangement supplies information about changes occurring both in the diffusion layer and, mainly, on the electrode surface. The choice of a suitable cell to perform Bidim-SEC experiments is critical, especially while working under a thin-layer regime.

T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma is an uncommon lymphoid neoplasm in adults, although more frequent in children and teenagers, that often affects the mediastinum and bone marrow, requiring intensive chemotherapy protocols. Its prognosis is poor if a cure is not achieved with first-line treatments. We present a case report of a 19-year-old man diagnosed with this type of lymphoma due to significant respiratory distress and a mediastinal mass.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) and non-compressible artery disease (NCAD) constitute predictors of subclinical atherosclerosis easily assessed through the ankle brachial index (ABI). Although both diseases show substantial genetic influences, few genetic association studies have focused on the ABI and PAD, and none have focused on NCAD. To overcome these limitations, we assessed the role of several candidate genes on the ABI, both in its continuous distribution and in the clinical manifestations associated to its extreme values: PAD and NCAD.

Coherent control over electron dynamics in atoms and molecules using high-intensity circularly polarized laser pulses gives rise to current loops, resulting in the emission of magnetic fields. We propose, and demonstrate with ab initio calculations, "current-gating" schemes to generate direct or alternating-current magnetic pulses in the infrared spectral region, with highly tunable waveform and frequency, and showing femtosecond-to-attosecond pulse duration. In optimal conditions, the magnetic pulse can be highly isolated from the driving laser and exhibits a high flux density (∼1 T at a few hundred nanometers from the source, with a pulse duration of 787 attoseconds) for application in forefront experiments of ultrafast spectroscopy.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by recurrent episodes of chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), which has been linked to the development of sympathoexcitation and hypertension. Furthermore, it has been shown that CIH induced inflammation and neuronal hyperactivation in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), a key brainstem region involved in sympathetic and cardiovascular regulation. Since several studies have proposed that NTS astrocytes may mediate neuroinflammation, we aimed to determine the potential contribution of NTS-astrocytes on the pathogenesis of CIH-induced hypertension.

In this study, water-soluble chitosan salts (chitosan amine sulfopropyl salts) were prepared from chitosan samples with different molecular weights and deacetylation degrees. These soluble-in-water polymer salts allowed us to produce, in an eco-friendly and facile method, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with better control on size and polydispersity, even at large silver concentrations than their corresponding chitosan sample. Chitosan salt-based materials (films and scaffolds) were analyzed in terms of antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC23915 or Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) are essential nutrients that can affect inflammatory responses. While n-3 PUFAs are generally considered beneficial for cardiovascular disease and obesity, the effects on asthma, the most common inflammatory lung disease are unclear. While prenatal dietary n-3 PUFAs decrease the risk for childhood wheezing, postnatal dietary n-3 PUFAs can worsen allergic airway inflammation.

Dietary fibres can exert beneficial anti-inflammatory effects through microbially fermented short-chain fatty acid metabolites<sup>1,2</sup>, although the immunoregulatory roles of most fibre diets and their microbiota-derived metabolites remain poorly defined. Here, using microbial sequencing and untargeted metabolomics, we show that a diet of inulin fibre alters the composition of the mouse microbiota and the levels of microbiota-derived metabolites, notably bile acids. This metabolomic shift is associated with type 2 inflammation in the intestine and lungs, characterized by IL-33 production, activation of group 2 innate lymphoid cells and eosinophilia.

Background: Breathing disorders (BD) (apnoeas/hypopneas, periodic breathing) are highly prevalent in chronic heart failure (CHF) and are associated with altered central respiratory control. Ample evidence identifies the retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) as an important chemosensitivity region for ventilatory control and generation of BD in CHF, however little is known about the cellular mechanisms underlying the RTN/BD relationship. Within the RTN, astrocyte-mediated purinergic signalling modulates respiration, but the potential contribution of RTN astrocytes to BD in CHF has not been explored.
