A direct regulation of adaptive immunity by the coagulation protease activated protein C (aPC) has recently been established. Preincubation of T cells with aPC for 1 hour before transplantation increases FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) and reduces acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) in mice, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. SARS-CoV-2-specific IgM antibodies wane during the first three months after infection and IgG antibody levels decline. This may limit the ability of antibody tests to identify previous SARS-CoV-2 infection at later time points. To examine if the diagnostic sensitivity of antibody tests falls off, we compared the sensitivity of two nucleoprotein-based antibody tests, the Roche Elecsis II Anti-SARS-CoV-2 and the Abbott SARS-CoV-2 IgG assay and three glycoprotein-based tests, the Abbott SARS-CoV-2 IgG II Quant, Siemens Atellica IM COV2T and Euroimmun SARS-CoV-2 assay with 53 sera obtained 6 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The transmigration capacity of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) is characteristically associated with their ability to home to sites of hematopoiesis in the transplanted host, to proliferate, to differentiate, and to successfully repopulate the hematopoietic system of a transplanted host. Stimulating agents shown to induce the transmigration of HSPC were often later identified to play significant roles in mobilization of HSPC or their interaction with niche cells in the hematopoietic microenvironment. A large body of observations indicate that there is an inconsistent knowledge of Transfusion Medicine among health care professionals as well as inconsistent knowledge in all aspects of the transfusion process, from blood donation to transfusion on the ward. It is obvious to consider that appropriate education in Transfusion Medicine should be achieved in the education of specialists who will prescribe transfusion on a regular basis (hematologists, critical care specialists, anaethesiologists and others.) However,we also believe that education in Transfusion Medicine should also be delivered to almost all other medical specialists who may prescribe blood components.

In addition to being a peptidase, the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) can be phosphorylated and involved in signal transduction. We evaluated the role of ACE in granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-induced hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) mobilization and detected a significant increase in mice-lacking ACE. Transplantation experiments revealed that the loss of ACE in the HPC microenvironment rather than in the HPCs increased mobilization.

The clinical application of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) has evolved from a highly experimental stage in the 1980s to a currently clinically established treatment for more than 20,000 patients annually who suffer from hematological malignancies and other severe diseases. Studies in numerous murine models have demonstrated that HSPCs reside in distinct niches within the bone marrow environment. Whereas transplanted HSPCs travel through the bloodstream and home to sites of hematopoiesis, HSPCs can be mobilized from these niches into the blood either physiologically or induced by pharmaceutical drugs.
