Article Synopsis
  • * This study explores integrating molecular data into genetic evaluation models using molecular pedigree reconstruction and Bayesian clustering to analyze lactation traits in 14 dairy goat herds with incomplete data.
  • * Results show a 37.3% increase in genetic relationships by using molecular information, leading to better estimates of genetic variance and heritability, thereby suggesting that simple molecular markers can enhance genetic improvement strategies in under-researched populations.

The κ-casein (CSN-3) and β-lactoglobulin (BLG) genes are extensively polymorphic in ruminants. Several association studies have estimated the effects of polymorphisms in these genes on milk yield, milk composition, and cheese-manufacturing properties. Usually, these results are based on production integrated over the lactation curve or on cross-sectional studies at specific days in milk (DIM).
