Care refusal behaviors by institutionalized older adults with dementia pose significant challenges for professional caregivers in residential care settings. This scoping review mapped the determinants and effects of care refusal in this population. A systematic search of five databases identified 19 studies published between 2013 and 2023.

HOTSPOT: An ad hoc teamwork platform for mixed human-robot teams.

Ad hoc teamwork is a research topic in multi-agent systems whereby an agent (the "ad hoc agent") must successfully collaborate with a set of unknown agents (the "teammates") without any prior coordination or communication protocol. However, research in ad hoc teamwork is predominantly focused on agent-only teams, but not on agent-human teams, which we believe is an exciting research avenue and has enormous application potential in human-robot teams. This paper will tap into this potential by proposing HOTSPOT, the first framework for ad hoc teamwork in human-robot teams.

Validation of a computerized version of the MNREAD chart for children.

Purpose: We aimed the develop and validate a computerized version of the MNREAD for the assessment of reading speed for children.

Methods: A computerized version of the MNREAD was built in Psykinematix software using the same parameters as the physical chart. We measured the reading velocity of 104 children (n = 44 of the 3rd grade; n = 60 of the 5th grade).

Molecular biomarkers in prostate cancer tumorigenesis and clinical relevance.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most frequent type of cancer in men and assessing circulating tumor cells (CTCs) by liquid biopsy is a promising tool to help in cancer early detection, staging, risk of recurrence evaluation, treatment prediction and monitoring. Blood-based liquid biopsy approaches enable the enrichment, detection and characterization of CTCs by biomarker analysis. Hence, comprehending the molecular markers, their role on each stage of cancer development and progression is essential to provide information that can help in future implementation of these biomarkers in clinical assistance.

Affective responses to stretching exercises: Exploring the timing of assessments.

Affective responses during exercise have been identified as a predictor of exercise adherence. However, research has been mostly limited to aerobic and resistance exercise. Considering that stretching activities are also an important component of physical fitness, this quasi-experimental study was designed to: 1) compare affective responses during and immediately after stretching exercises in apparently healthy adults, and 2) assess the consistency and repeatability of affect ratings obtained one week apart.

Chromatic discrimination in fixed saturation levels from tufted capuchin monkeys with different color vision genotypes.

Recent research has proposed new approaches to investigate color vision in Old World Monkeys by measuring suprathreshold chromatic discrimination. In this study, we aimed to extend this approach to New World Monkeys with different color vision genotypes by examining their performance in chromatic discrimination tasks along different fixed chromatic saturation axes. Four tufted capuchin monkeys were included in the study, and their color vision genotypes were one classical protanope, one classical deuteranope, one non-classical protanope, and a normal trichromat.

Purpose: Aging causes substantial changes in the intraocular lens, which leads to a reduction in chromatic perception. We aimed to measure the ocular light dispersion component in relation to the reduction in color vision by aging.

Methods: Intraocular straylight was quantified psychophysically by C-Quant for light dispersion [Log(s)], reliability of the results (ESD), and psychometric sampling quality (Q).

Assessing Affective Valence and Activation in Stretching Activities with the Feeling Scale and the Felt Arousal Scale: A Systematic Review.

Affective responses have been considered key determinants for exercise adherence, but research on affective responses to stretching activities is scarce. Given the role of these responses in exercise adherence, our aim in this review was to explore (a) the utility and feasibility of core affect in stretching-related activities as measured by the Feeling Scale (FS) and/or the Felt Arousal Scale (FAS); (b) the timing of administering these scales; and (c) the scales' applicability and interpretability in this context. Inclusion criteria for studies in this review were experimental and non-experimental studies written in English that based affect assessment on the FS and/or FAS and that applied these scales to participants engaged in physical activity, individually or in groups.

Method: This is a qualitative study, supported by reflections on the Humanitude Care Methodology, carried out with workers from different areas in a nursing home for elderly people in Portugal. Data collection took place between September and October 2020, from individual and online interviews.

Here, we investigate avian extinctions resulting from the Tucuruí Hydroelectric Reservoir (THR), the oldest Amazonian mega dam, which impounded the Tocantins River in 1984.

Along with a common cone opsin gene for short wavelengths (sws1), Neotropical primates (Platyrrhini) have only one cone opsin gene for medium-long wavelengths (mws/lws) per X chromosome while Paleotropical primates (Catarrhini), including humans, have two active genes. Therefore, while female platyrrhines may be trichromats, males are always dichromats.

Zoonotic vaccinia virus strains belonging to different genetic clades exhibit immunomodulation abilities that are proportional to their virulence.

Background: The vaccinia virus (VACV) isolates, Guarani P1 virus (GP1V) and Passatempo virus (PSTV), were isolated during zoonotic outbreaks in Brazil. Each one of them belongs to two different VACV clades, defined by biological aspects that include virulence in mice and phylogenetic analysis. Considering that information about how vaccinia viruses from different groups elicit immune responses in animals is scarce, we investigated such responses in mice infected either by GP1V (group 2) or PSTV (group 1), using VACV Western Reserve strain (VACV-WR) as control.

Changes in plantar load distribution in legally blind subjects.

We investigated the impact of visual impairment on balance control. We measured the center of pressure (COP) between the two feet and plantar surface pressures on each foot in 18 normal-sighted participants and compared their data with measures from 18 legally blind participants, either acquired or congenital. Pressures were measured in open- and closed-eye conditions using a baropodometric resistive plate.

Metabolic status of lactating cows given a hepatoprotectant and different feed energy sources.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of hepatoprotective agents added to diets containing different energy sources on the metabolic status of lactating dairy cows in confinement. Sixteen Holstein × Gir crossbred midlactation cows with a body weight of 553 ± 85 kg were included in this feeding trial. These animals were arranged in a 4 × 4 Latin square experimental design.

Towards an effective sensing technology to monitor micro-scale interface loosening of bioelectronic implants.

Instrumented implants are being developed with a radically innovative design to significantly reduce revision surgeries. Although bone replacements are among the most prevalent surgeries performed worldwide, implant failure rate usually surpasses 10%. High sophisticated multifunctional bioelectronic implants are being researched to incorporate cosurface capacitive architectures with ability to deliver personalized electric stimuli to peri-implant target tissues.

Nursing students have difficulties interacting with cognitively impaired elders. This study aimed to identify students' difficulties in interacting with elders, the causes of the difficulties in interacting with elders, the strategies used to reduce these difficulties, and the importance attributed to the Structured Sequence of Humanitude Care Procedures (SSHCP). It also aimed to assess the contribution of the Humanitude Care Methodology (HCM) to the development of interaction skills in nursing students.

The present study aimed to evaluate the degradation dynamics of high-quality tropical forage according to the levels of nitrogen supplementation. In this study, 4 rumen-fistulated cows with a body weight of 653 ± 47 kg were used. These animals were distributed in a 4 × 4 Latin square experimental design.
