In the present in vitro study, we evaluated the adhesion of an injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) to laser-textured zirconia surfaces and their resultant friction behavior against bone tissue. Three types of zirconia surfaces were compared regarding the i-PRF coating effects: 1) grit blasted with 250-μm spherical alumina particles and acid etched with 20% hydrofluoric acid (ZLA), 2) laser textured with a random (RD) surface pattern, or 3) laser textured with a designed pattern based on 16 lines and 8 passages (L16N8). The coefficient of friction (COF) of the specimens was assessed on a reciprocating sliding pin-on-plate tribometer at 1-N normal load, 1 Hz, and a 2-mm stroke length.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) nature, persistence and the considerable amount of toxic elements cause significant environmental damage. Traditional passive treatment systems typically focus on neutralizing AMD using limestone and removing common toxic metal(loid)s, and often overlook the recovery of economic and strategic elements (e.g.

The crucial role of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in the development of hi-tech in addition to their limited availability have urged countries to develop sustainable alternatives to their conventional primary sources (ore mining). Sorption technologies using magnetic materials such as spinel ferrite nanoparticles provide efficient removal of REEs from contaminated solutions and ease of separation through application of an external magnetic field. However, there is still limited knowledge available regarding the optimal operational conditions in which to use these materials, especially in complex aqueous mixtures with different REEs.

Given the significant industrial applications of rare earth elements (REEs), supply chain constraints, and negative environmental impacts associated with their extraction, finding alternative sources has become a critical challenge. Previously, we highlighted the potential of living sp. in the removal and pre-concentration of Y from a solution obtained by sequential acid leaching of spent fluorescent lamps (SFLs).

Article Synopsis
  • Rare earth elements (REEs), like neodymium (Nd), are important for many technologies but also pose environmental risks, particularly through their accumulation in ecosystems.
  • The study found that mercury (Hg) is more toxic to the mussel species Mytilus galloprovincialis than Nd, but the macroalgae Ulva lactuca can mitigate some harmful effects of Hg exposure.
  • The research highlights the role of U. lactuca in protecting marine organisms, showing its potential to reduce cellular toxicity and maintain balance in aquatic systems affected by these contaminants.

This study investigates the impact of three key variables on the performance of nanoporous AM-3 and layered AM-4 titanosilicates in removing nine REEs (Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, and Dy) from natural mineral water and identifies optimal operational conditions using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The experimental conditions were determined by a Box-Behnken Design of 3 factors-3 levels (pH 4, 6, and 8; sorbent dose 20, 100, and 180 mg/L; and element concentration 1, 3, and 5 μmol/L). Three-dimensional response surfaces were used to assess the linear, quadratic, and interaction influences of each factor on the REEs' removal percentage.

Objective: The main aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological aspects and distribution of granules composed of deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) and human dentin-derived bone graft (HDBG) into a putty consistency mixture.

Materials And Methods: DBBM or HDBG were mixed with an alginate-based hydrogel at two different granule/hydrogel ratio (1:1 and 1:3) and divided into four test groups while two control groups were composed of DBBM or HDBG free of hydrogel. Groups of specimens were cross-sectioned for morphological evaluation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at backscattered electrons mode.

Mercury's extreme toxicity and persistence in the environment justifies a thorough evaluation of its dynamics in ecosystems. Aveiro Lagoon (Portugal) was for decades subject to mercury effluent discharges. A Nature-based Solution (NbS) involving Zostera noltei re-colonization is being tested as an active ecosystem restoration measure.

In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was applied with a Box-Behnken design to optimize the biosorption (removal and bioconcentration) of rare earth elements (REEs) (Y, La, Ce Eu, Gd, Tb) by living Ulva sp. from diluted industrial wastewaters (also containing Pt and the classic contaminants Hg, Pb, Zn, Cu, Co, and Cd). Element concentration (A: 10-190 μg/L), wastewater salinity (B: 15-35), and Ulva sp.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the sandblasting treatment on the microstructure, optical and mechanical properties of multi-layered translucent zirconia.

Methods: Samples of yttria-stabilized zirconia were prepared by stratifying four layers (L1, L2, L3 and L4) of ML-type KATANA multi-layered monolithic discs, whose surfaces were then sandblasted with alumina particles (110 µm and 0.2 MPa) in order to evaluate its effect on the presence of different crystalline phases as well as on the optical and mechanical properties of each of the four layers.

Lithium (Li) is present in many modern technologies, most notably in rechargeable batteries. Inefficient recycling strategies for electronic waste containing this element may result in its release into aquatic systems, which may induce harmful effects on wildlife. The present study evaluated the effect of Li contamination on the gastropod Tritia reticulata exposed to different concentrations of Li (100, 200, 500 and 1000 µg L) for 21 days.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of seagrass recolonization as a nature-based solution for the recovery of a coastal area historically contaminated by mercury (Laranjo Bay, Ria de Aveiro, Portugal). A mesocosm approach was employed to assess the resistance of Zostera noltei to transplantation into contaminated sediments collected in-situ (0.5-20 mg kg Hg).

Anthropogenic impacts have affected the coastal environment and contributed to its contamination. Mercury (Hg) is widespread in nature and has been shown to be toxic in even the smallest amounts, negatively affecting not only the marine ecosystem but also the entire trophic chain due to its biomagnification. Mercury ranks third on the Agency for Toxic Substances and Diseases Registry (ATSDR) priority list and it is therefore imperative to develop more effective methods than those currently available to avoid the persistence of this contaminant in aquatic ecosystems.

Surface modification of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) using lasers for adhesion enhancement with resin-matrix cement has been increasingly explored. However, Y-TZP is chemically inert and non-reactive, demanding surface modification using alternative approaches to enhance its bond strength to resin-matrix cements. The main aim of this study was to conduct an integrative review on the influence of ultrashort pulse laser patterning of zirconia (3Y-TZP) for enhanced bonding to resin-matrix cements.

Efficient and sustainable secondary sourcing of Rare-Earth Elements (REE) is essential to counter supply bottlenecks and the impacts associated with primary mining. Recycled electronic waste (E-waste) is considered a promising REE source and hydrometallurgical methods followed by chemical separation techniques (usually solvent extraction) have been successfully applied to these wastes with high REE yields. However, the generation of acidic and organic waste streams is considered unsustainable and has led to the search for "greener" approaches.
