We investigated the genotype diversity and dynamics of Campylobacter in a commercial broiler flock during rearing and slaughter. In total, 220 Campylobacter jejuni isolates collected on four sampling occasions during rearing and from routine sampling during slaughter were subtyped by SmaI macrorestriction and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, PFGE. Eight different SmaI types were found.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined 84 Campylobacter jejuni isolates from Swedish patients using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) to identify genetic patterns and track infection sources.
  • Researchers found 52 distinct PFGE types, with the largest two clusters accounting for 71% of the samples and showing significant seasonal variations in outbreaks.
  • Notably, isolates from children exhibited less genetic similarity to those from adults, suggesting diverse infection sources or dynamics among different age groups.

The major part of the gene inlB was sequenced in 24 strains of Listeria monocytogenes belonging to serovars 1/2a, 1/2b, 1/2c, 3b and 4b. A phylogenetic analysis based on the inlB nucleotide sequences showed that strains of serovars 1/2a and 1/2c were closely related, as well as those of serovars 1/2b and 3b. Strains sharing serovar 4b could be divided into two distinct groups.
