Article Synopsis
  • * A study replicated this by testing participants with both phonemic and semantic word evaluation tasks and found that while semantic processing led to better recognition, it did not confirm the advantage of MH over cRH.
  • * The results indicated no significant difference between the MH and cRH groups in their ability to learn verbally incidental material, challenging previous research findings and suggesting the need for further investigation into the reasons behind these discrepancies.

Article Synopsis
  • The TTM2 trial found no significant difference in mortality or poor functional outcomes between targeted hypothermia and targeted normothermia 6 months after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA).
  • A detailed analysis aimed to assess brain dysfunction and cognitive function in survivors, focusing on societal participation after OHCA.
  • This study involved 1861 comatose adults across 61 hospitals in 14 countries, with follow-up conducted by masked assessors showing no differences in functional outcomes between the two temperature control methods.

Background And Purpose: There are currently no biomarkers to select cryptogenic stroke (CS) patients for monitoring with insertable cardiac monitors (ICMs), the most effective tool for diagnosing atrial fibrillation (AF) in CS. The purpose of this study was to assess clinically available biomarkers as predictors of AF.

Methods: Eligible CS and cryptogenic transient ischaemic attack patients underwent 12-month monitoring with ICMs, clinical follow-up and biomarker sampling.

Mechanical thrombectomy is now the standard treatment for acute ischaemic stroke with occlusion of a carotid or intercranial artery. With occlusions of this type, thrombolytic treatment often has limited effect. The therapeutic outcome with the use of thrombectomy is time-dependent, and a personalised approach to indication is always necessary.

Purpose: Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation is often suspected as a probable cause of cryptogenic stroke. Continuous long-term ECG monitoring using insertable cardiac monitors is a clinically effective technique to screen for atrial fibrillation and superior to conventional follow-up in cryptogenic stroke. However, more studies are needed to identify factors which can help selecting patients with the highest possibility of detecting atrial fibrillation with prolonged rhythm monitoring.

The use of new, direct anticoagulants is increasing. Data from both controlled trials and clinical practice have shown that these drugs are as efficacious and safe as warfarin for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and as stroke prophylaxis for patients with atrial fibrillation. But what if platelet inhibition is also indicated? In the following, the combination of antiplatelets and the new anticoagulants is discussed for various indications.
