Uterine contractions during delivery increase the resistance to flow in the blood vessels of the placenta and decreases placental blood circulation, possibly subjecting the fetus to hypoxia. Several methods have been developed for monitoring the condition of the fetus during delivery. Cardiotocography is used to monitor the fetus's heart rate and variability in relation to the mother's contractions.
