Quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) as a biochemical tool to study the diet composition of predators is frequently used in marine ecology to infer trophic links in vertebrate consumers. However, the potential and challenges of this method in other ecosystems have only recently been studied. The application in soil ecosystems leads to hurdles not encountered in the marine, such as the low similarity of fatty acid signatures between resource and consumer.

Objectives To estimate remission rates of chronic headache (CH), focusing on potential predictors of headache remission and medication. Methods We used data from the longitudinal population-based German Headache Consortium (GHC) Study (n = 9,944, 18-65 years). Validated questionnaires were used at baseline (t, 2003-2007, response rate: 55.

Aim: To determine the effect of internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling on anatomical and functional success rates in stage 2 and 3 idiopathic macular hole surgery (MHS).

Methods: Randomised clinical trial of stage 2 and 3 idiopathic macular hole without visible epiretinal fibrosis and with less than 1 year's duration of symptoms. Eyes were randomised to (1) vitrectomy alone without retinal surface manipulation, (2) vitrectomy plus 0.

Purpose: To determine the longterm risk of pseudophakic retinal detachment (PRD) in a defined population undergoing standardized phacoemulsification surgery at a single centre.

Design: We carried out a register-based, retrospective, consecutive, uncontrolled study. All 6352 eyes that underwent cataract surgery at our institution during the years 1996-1998 were included in the study.

Purpose: To estimate the incidence of retinal detachment (RD) after phacoemulsification cataract extraction in an unselected group of patients.

Setting: Herlev University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Methods: This retrospective review comprised 6521 cataract patients who had phacoemulsification over a 3-year period.

Purpose: This study presents an evaluation of cataract surgery on diabetic patients. One experienced surgeon carried out phaco emulsification on all subjects and the same surface-coated one-piece PMMA-lens-type was implanted. The lens fluorescence and the blood-aqueous barrier (BAB) were then evaluated as experimental preoperative risk indicators.

We analyzed postoperative corneal astigmatism in 32 eyes followed for three years after small incision phacoemulsification with a 4 mm scleral tunnel incision and a single-stitch, horizontal suture technique. Sutures were left intact postoperatively. Mean surgically induced cylinder was 0.

A prospective Danish multicentre study was conducted to evaluate the incidence of retinal detachment after cataract extraction in myopic eyes (axial length, > or = 25.5 mm). Two hundred and forty-seven cataract extractions in myopic eyes were reported during a period of 13 months.

The miscibility of human semisynthetic regular and lente insulins (Actrapid human/Monotard human) and human biosynthetic regular and NPH insulins (Humulin regular/Humulin NPH) was studied in vitro and in 16 insulin-dependent diabetic patients. In vitro a decrease of regular insulin was found immediately after mixture with semisynthetic lente insulin in proportions 1:4, 1:3, 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1. This was not found after mixture with human biosynthetic regular and NPH insulins.

A preliminary report on laser treatment of senile macular degeneration is presented. Over a one year period 234 patients with symptoms and signs of macular degeneration were examined with fluorescein angiography. 32 patients (14%) showed neovascular membranes accessible to treatment with blue/green argon laser.

Out-patient cataract surgery was recently introduced as a routine procedure in our department. Background population, selection criteria and practical-administrative procedures for the first 33 patients are described. 19 females and 14 males, age range 45 to 90 years, were offered ambulatory surgery; 19 had extracapsular surgery and 27 intraocular lenses.

The effects of locally applied Indomethacin were studied. Ten healthy subjects received 1 drop of a 1% watery solution 4 times a day in their left eye during 2 weeks, the right eye serving as control. Neither changes in visual acuity and refraction nor in the appearance and function of the external and anterior segment of the eye were found during this period.
