People living with cancer should have access to clear and comprehensible treatment information to empower informed decision-making. With the increasing adoption of open access publishing and plain-language summaries, clinical trial findings in journals are becoming more accessible. However, this will only help patients if they are equipped with the relevant knowledge and understanding to make sense of these findings.

Astrocyte TrkB promotes brain injury and edema formation in ischemic stroke.

Following ischemic stroke astrocytes undergo rapid molecular and functional changes that may accentuate tissue damage. In this study we identified the neurotrophin receptor TrkB in astrocytes as a key promoter of acute CNS injury in ischemic stroke. In fact, TrkB protein was strongly upregulated in astrocytes after human and experimental stroke, and transgenic mice lacking astrocyte TrkB displayed significantly smaller lesion volume, lower brain atrophy and better motor performance than control animals after transient middle cerebral artery occlusion.

Background: The European Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (ESPRAS) comprises 40 national societies across Europe. In addition to ESPRAS, there are 8 different European Plastic Surgery societies representing Plastic Surgeons in Europe. The 4 European Leadership Forum (ELF) of ESPRAS, held under the motto "Stronger together in Europe" in Munich in 2023, aimed to collect and disseminate information regarding the national member societies of ESPRAS and European societies for Plastic Surgeons.

Garcinolic Acid Distinguishes Between GACKIX Domains and Modulates Interaction Networks.

Natural products are often uniquely suited to modulate protein-protein interactions (PPIs) due to their architectural and functional group complexity relative to synthetic molecules. Here we demonstrate that the natural product garcinolic acid allosterically blocks the CBP/p300 KIX PPI network and displays excellent selectivity over related GACKIX motifs. It does so via a strong interaction (K 1 μM) with a non-canonical binding site containing a structurally dynamic loop in CBP/p300 KIX.

Variation in herbivore space use: comparing two savanna ecosystems with different anthrax outbreak patterns in southern Africa.

Background: The distribution of resources can affect animal range sizes, which in turn may alter infectious disease dynamics in heterogenous environments. The risk of pathogen exposure or the spatial extent of outbreaks may vary with host range size. This study examined the range sizes of herbivorous anthrax host species in two ecosystems and relationships between spatial movement behavior and patterns of disease outbreaks for a multi-host environmentally transmitted pathogen.

Preparation, Characterization, and Mechanistic Considerations for 1,1,1-Tri(thioacetyl)ethane and 1,1-Di(thioacetyl)ethene.

Two new compounds, 1,1,1-tri(thioacetyl)ethane and 1,1-di(thioacetyl)ethene, arose during reactions of acetyl methoxy(thiocarbonyl) sulfide with potassium methyl xanthate. Relevant mechanisms were elucidated, which in turn suggested novel streamlined routes to these same compounds. The concept of environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and good governance (ESG) is now well established in the corporate world and in for-profit organizations. However, it is not a concept that has reached medical and surgical association boardrooms in a meaningful way. It is important to define the concept of physician and corporate author expertise and objectives of ESG, provide a rationale for using ESG within orthopaedic organizations, and identify specific areas (primarily the "S" and the "G") where the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and other groups can align with this strategy.

Prospective, multi-site study of patient outcomes after implementation of the TREWS machine learning-based early warning system for sepsis.

Early recognition and treatment of sepsis are linked to improved patient outcomes. Machine learning-based early warning systems may reduce the time to recognition, but few systems have undergone clinical evaluation. In this prospective, multi-site cohort study, we examined the association between patient outcomes and provider interaction with a deployed sepsis alert system called the Targeted Real-time Early Warning System (TREWS).

Factors driving provider adoption of the TREWS machine learning-based early warning system and its effects on sepsis treatment timing.

Machine learning-based clinical decision support tools for sepsis create opportunities to identify at-risk patients and initiate treatments at early time points, which is critical for improving sepsis outcomes. In this article, two dance educators offer a definition of rhythm from both educational and performance perspectives and discuss pedagogical practices that waken students' awareness to rhythm as a lived-experience over which they have creative control. For the dancer, in the midst of the dance, rhythms are, in the words of Margaret H'Doubler, recurring patterns of measured energy. These patterns are nested in scales from the moment-to-moment shifts in muscular contraction and release to the rise and fall of dramatic tension in a performed dance.

Developing welfare parameters for African elephants (Loxodonta africana) in fenced reserves in South Africa.

South Africa has many fenced reserves harbouring small to medium sized populations of African elephant (Loxodonta africana), most of which have been translocated. Elephants on fenced reserves may be exposed to various management interventions and practices (translocation, hunting, darting, high tourism impact, contraception programs, disruption due to infrastructure maintenance, etc.).

This paper evaluated analytical methods used to generate time-series data from elephant tail hairs, which can be used to reflect changing exposure to environmental geochemistry.
