Article Synopsis
  • Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a frequent issue in end-stage kidney disease patients, and hungry bone syndrome (HBS) can develop after parathyroid surgery in dialysis patients, but there's limited research on predicting HBS outcomes.
  • A study of 66 peritoneal dialysis patients showed that those with HBS had lower postoperative calcium and higher levels of alkaline phosphatase and potassium compared to those without HBS, indicating potential risk factors for developing HBS after surgery.
  • The study found that while HBS was common (71.2%) in patients post-surgery, there were no significant differences in the recurrence of hyperparathyroidism or mortality rates between those with and without HBS after an average follow

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 241 patients, the oral cavity was the most common bleeding site, and a significant portion had advanced cancer or local recurrence; the nonsurvivor group had a higher rate of active bleeding.
  • * Key risk factors identified for 30-day mortality included a heart rate over 100 beats per minute and the need for inotropic support, providing important insights for doctors evaluating patient survival chances.

: The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the in-hospital and long-term outcomes of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) bleeding and to analyze the risk factors for mortality. : We included patients who presented to the emergency department (ED) with HNC bleeding. Variables of patients who survived and died were compared and associated factors were investigated by logistic regression and Cox's proportional hazard model.

Article Synopsis
  • A 57-year-old female patient with a long history of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) developed complications including Crohn's disease and a rectovaginal fistula after undergoing treatment with adalimumab.
  • After failing to improve with adalimumab and experiencing cryptococcal pneumonia, her treatment was switched to vedolizumab, and she underwent surgical interventions including colostomy and proctectomy.
  • The patient achieved clinical remission without active inflammation, demonstrating the effectiveness of combining biologics with surgical approaches for treating complex cases of Crohn's disease alongside SLE.

Wound necrosis and secondary infection are common complications after bites. Clinical tools to evaluate the infection risk after Taiwan cobra bites are lacking. In this Cobra BITE study, we investigated the prevalence of wound infection, bacteriology, and corresponding antibiotic usage in patients presenting with Taiwan cobra snakebites.

Background: Fistula and intraabdominal fistula are common complications of Crohn's disease (CD), but complex rectal fistula with abscess formation is rare. Tumor necrosis factor antagonists combined with percutaneous drainage or surgical intervention is optimal treatment for fistulizing CD with intraabdominal abscess. There is no study show the efficacy of vedolizumab in such complicated condition.

In this study, four kinds of lignocellulosic fibers (LFs), namely, those from Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata), Taiwan red pine (Pinus taiwanensis), India-charcoal trema (Trema orientalis) and makino bamboo (Phyllostachys makinoi), were selected as reinforcements and incorporated into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) to manufacture wood-plastic composites (WPCs) by a flat platen pressing process. In addition to comparing the differences in the physico-mechanical properties of these composites, their chemical compositions were evaluated and their thermal decomposition kinetics were analyzed to investigate the effects of the lignocellulosic species on the properties of the WPCs. The results showed that the WPC made with Chinese fir displayed a typical M-shaped vertical density profile due to the high aspect ratio of its LFs, while a flat vertical density profile was observed for the WPCs made with other LFs.
