Caring for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) creates competing priorities of interventions for nurses and other health care providers. Oral care might be prioritized lower; however, its neglect may lead to sequelae such as extended time in the ICU, nosocomial diseases most notably ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), or oral problems.
