Decreased kidney function is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events and mortality, and heart failure (HF) is a wellknown risk factor for renal dysfunction. Acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with HF often is attributed to prerenal factors, such as renal hypoperfusion and ischemia as a result of decreased cardiac output. Another such factor is reduction of absolute or relative circulating blood volume, with the decrease in renal blood flow leading to renal hypoxia followed by a decrease in the glomerular filtration rate.

Pathogen-associated molecular patterns, including cytoplasmic DNA and double-strand (ds)RNA trigger the induction of interferon (IFN) and antiviral states protecting cells and organisms from pathogens. Here we discovered that the transfection of human airway cell lines or non-transformed fibroblasts with 24mer dsRNA mimicking the cellular micro-RNA (miR)29b-1* gives strong anti-viral effects against human adenovirus type 5 (AdV-C5), influenza A virus X31 (H3N2), and SARS-CoV-2. These anti-viral effects required blunt-end complementary RNA strands and were not elicited by corresponding single-strand RNAs.

Mammalian adenoviruses (AdVs) comprise more than ~350 types including over 100 human (HAdVs) and just three mouse AdVs (MAdVs). While most HAdVs initiate infection by high affinity/avidity binding of their fiber knob (FK) protein to either coxsackievirus AdV receptor (CAR), CD46 or desmoglein (DSG)-2, MAdV-1 (M1) infection requires arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD) binding integrins. To identify the receptors mediating MAdV infection we generated five novel reporter viruses for MAdV-1/-2/-3 (M1, M2, M3) transducing permissive murine (m) CMT-93 cells, but not B16 mouse melanoma cells expressing mCAR, human (h) CD46 or hDSG-2.

Persistent viruses cause chronic disease, and threaten the lives of immunosuppressed individuals. Here, we elucidate a mechanism supporting the persistence of human adenovirus (AdV), a virus that can kill immunosuppressed patients. Cell biological analyses, genetics and chemical interference demonstrate that one of five AdV membrane proteins, the E3-19K glycoprotein specifically triggers the unfolded protein response (UPR) sensor IRE1α in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), but not other UPR sensors, such as protein kinase R-like ER kinase (PERK) and activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6).

Familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) is an autosomal dominant hereditary systemic amyloidosis caused by mutation of the transthyretin (TTR) gene, and usually shows sensory-dominant polyneuropathy and autonomic neuropathy at the initial stage. The pathogenesis of this neuropathy remains unknown, although several mechanisms, including mechanical compression, vessel occlusion, TTR toxicity and Schwann cell dysfunction have been proposed. We describe a patient with late-onset FAP caused by a TTR E61K mutation.
