The purpose of the current study was to determine regional spatiotemporal differences and to gain insight on the mechanisms responsible for lipid accumulation during apoptotic cell death using in vivo MR spectroscopic imaging in combination with histology and biochemical membrane lipid analyses. Rats bearing BT4C gliomas were treated with ganciclovir (GCV) for 14 days, and combined in vivo quantitative MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) of gliomas with histology and a biochemical analysis of major cell membrane constituents. By using 1H MRSI in vivo in combination with histology, we were able to demonstrate previously unattainable regional lipid concentration differences in tumors during GCV-induced apoptosis, with 5-microL tissue volume resolution.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of differences in cholesterol absorption efficiency on the postprandial lipemia and lipoprotein composition.

Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects were divided into low and high cholesterol absorbers on the basis of serum cholestanol to cholesterol ratio. A high-performance liquid chromatographic method with evaporative light scattering detection was developed for quantitation of free and esterified cholesterol, triglycerides and major phospholipids from the same lipid extract in two runs utilizing the same internal standard.

Background: Both the amount and quality of dietary fat can modify glucose and insulin metabolism.

Objective: The objective was to examine the relation between serum lipid fatty acids and glucose metabolism before and after the consumption of a diet enriched in either monounsaturated (Mono diet) or polyunsaturated (Poly diet) fatty acids.

Design: After consuming a high-saturated-fat run-in diet for 3 wk, 31 subjects with impaired glucose tolerance were randomly counseled to consume the Mono [40% fat; 11%, 19%, and 8% of energy as saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (S:M:P), respectively] or the Poly (34% fat; S:M:P of 11%:10%:10%) diet for 8 wk.
