The Main Determinants of Serum Resistin Level in Type 2 Diabetic Patients are Renal Function and Inflammation not Presence of Microvascular Complication, Obesity and Insulin Resistance.

Aim: The association of increased resistin levels in chronic kidney disease with diabetic nephropathy has not yet been clarified. Our aim was to analyze the relationship between serum resistin levels and various diabetic microvascular complications in patients.

Methods: A total of 83 patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study.

A cross-sectional study to evaluate metabolic and demographic factors affecting cognitive function among low educated internal medicine outpatients.

Objective: To evaluate factors affecting cognitive function in internal medicine outpatients.

Methods: A total of 130 consecutive outpatients aged 50-80 years old were included in this cross-sectional study conducted at Okmeydani Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey between March and May 2013. Cognitive function was evaluated via Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination (SMMSE) scores.

Bone Mineral Density and 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels in Patients With Ocular Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome: A Case-Control Study.

The objective of this study was to evaluate bone mineral density (BMD) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels in patients with ocular pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome. Subjects with ocular PEX syndrome were included in the PEX group and subjects without PEX syndrome were defined as the control group. 25(OH)D levels were measured by chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay method.

A mucormycosis case treated with a combination of caspofungin and amphotericin B.

Mucormycosis is a rare, invasive and fatal disease that occurs mainly in diabetes mellitus patients with uncontrolled blood glucose levels or in immunocompromised patients. The mortality rate of this disease is as high as 25 to 80%, despite aggressive surgical treatment and antifungal therapy. This high mortality requires alternative treatment approaches.

Re-emergence of tularemia in Turkey.

Four tularemia epidemics were reported from three different regions of Turkey between 1936 and 1953. After a long interval, a new tularemia epidemic was reported from the area around Bursa in the northwestern part of Turkey in 1988. Following this first epidemic in Bursa, small epidemics occurred in areas around Bursa between 1988 and 2002.

[Retrospective evaluation of patients who were diagnosed as infectious mononucleosis between 1984-2005].

In this study, the clinical and laboratory features of 26 infectious mononucleosis (IMN) cases who have been diagnosed between the years of 1984-2005 were evaluated retrospectively. The mean age of the patients was 26+/-11 years, the rate of being hospitalized was 65%, and mean hospitalization period was 9.2+/-6 days.

[The epidemiology of malaria in Bursa.].

Malaria is still one of the important public health problems in Anatolia. Since Bursa is a well-developed industrial and agricultural province in the Marmara region, migration rate to this region from eastern and southeastern regions of Turkey is quite high. In this retrospective study, malaria cases detected by the Malaria Control Unit Division of the Bursa Health Directorship from 1986-2002 have been evaluated.

Brucellar spondylitis: review of 25 cases.

Objective: : Brucellar spondylitis is one of the most serious complications of brucellosis. It should be considered in patients who have back pain and neurologic disorders as well as systemic symptoms and findings in or from endemic areas such as Turkey. This report describes important features of the disease.

Evaluation of serum C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interleukin-10 levels as diagnostic and prognostic parameters in patients with community-acquired sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock.

The diagnostic value of procalcitonin, C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-10 levels in differentiating sepsis from severe sepsis and the prognostic value of these levels in predicting outcome were evaluated and compared in patients with community-acquired sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock in the first 72 h of admission to the hospital. Thirty-nine patients were included in the study. The severe sepsis and septic shock cases were combined in a single "severe sepsis" group, and all comparisons were made between the sepsis (n=21 patients) and the severe sepsis (n=18 patients) groups.

[Short communication: retrospective analysis of 21 HIV/AIDS cases].

In this study, 21 HIV/AIDS cases (18 male, 3 female; age range 17-64 years), followed up in the Department of Infectious Diseases of Uludag University Medical Faculty between 1997-2003 have been analyzed retrospectively, by means of epidemiological, clinical and laboratory aspects. Nineteen (90%) of them were heterosexual, and in 9 cases the diagnosis was coincidental during the blood donations or routine testing. The non-compliance rate of patients to antiretroviral treatment was found as 76%, and the most important factor for non-compliance was the difficulty in providing antiretroviral drugs.

Tularemia in Bursa, Turkey: 205 cases in ten years.

Tularemia is a zoonotic disease caused by the coccobacillus F. tularensis. Small epidemics and sporadic cases were seen around Bursa since November 1988.

Influences of alternate therapy protocol and continuous infectious disease consultation on antibiotic susceptibility in ICU.

In this study, the effects of alternate use of imipenem and cefoperazone/sulbactam(CFP/Sul) on antibiotic resistance in the intensive care unit (ICU) were investigated. Between 1 April 1993 and 1 April 1994, the infectious diseases consultant saw patients when required and there was no alternative therapy for antibiotics. For the following 2 years, the same consultant followed up each patient from admission to discharge by daily visits to the ICU and an alternative therapy protocol was initiated.

Detection of Brucella melitensis by BACTEC NR 730 and BACTEC 9120 systems.
