Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence and risk factors in cats in Rio de Janeiro.

Seroprevalence studies on cats are essential for monitoring the occurrence of Toxoplasma gondii infection. The present research investigated anti-T. gondii antibodies, risk factors, clinical signs, hematology and serum biochemistry in cats from different regions of Rio de Janeiro.

Feline congenital hypothyroidism: a case report.

We report a two-month-old male cat weighing 630 grams with congenital hypothyroidism. The main complaints were difficulty defecating for more than three days and prostration. Physical examination revealed a broad, flat face, a short neck, enlarged submandibular lymph nodes, chemosis, mild bilateral mucopurulent ocular discharge, seborrheic coat, with gingival thickening around the upper and lower deciduous incisor teeth with partial eruption.

Undetectable proviral DNA and viral RNA levels after raltegravir administration in two cats with natural feline leukemia virus infection.

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infection was discovered over 50 years ago; however, the serious clinical changes associated with FeLV infection still have great importance in the diagnosis, prevention, and clinical management of symptomatic patients. Progressive infection with FeLV leads to a reduction in the patient's life expectancy and quality of life. This report describes the use of an antiretroviral integrase inhibitor, raltegravir, in two cats with natural FeLV infection.

Intranasal clotrimazole spray 1% associated with oral itraconazole for nasal feline sporotrichosis: a case series.

Feline sporotrichosis is a major clinical problem among cats in Brazil and is also a neglected, but important, public health issue, due to its zoonotic potential. The nasal clinical form of the disease is particularly challenging, having treatment refractoriness and clinical signs relapse as common features. This case series study aimed to preliminarily describe the effects of the azolic antifungal drug, clotrimazole, as a topical 1% solution spray, together with itraconazole on inducing disease remission, as well as treatment tolerability and safety.

Urinary capillariosis in a cat from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Clinical, morphological and phylogenetic characterization.

Capillaria spp. infections of the urinary tract of domestic carnivores are uncommon worldwide. Infections are rarely diagnosed and are typically asymptomatic.

Adjuvant chemotherapy with mitoxantrone for cats with mammary carcinomas treated with radical mastectomy.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the disease-free interval, survival time and adverse events of a combined treatment approach in cats with mammary malignant tumors using radical mastectomy and adjuvant mitoxantrone.

Methods: All cats underwent surgery to remove the mammary chain containing the tumors. A 3 cm margin was obtained around removed tumors.

Recurrent pulmonary edema secondary to elongated soft palate in a cat.

A 9-month-old intact female Persian cat presented with recurrent pulmonary edema secondary to an elongated soft palate. Endoscopic evaluation of the pharynx and larynx showed that the elongated soft palate was overlying the epiglottis. Partial resection of the soft palate was performed and the cat showed no further respiratory signs.

Duodenal perforation caused by Rhizomucor species in a cat.

Unlabelled: CLINICAL SUMMARY: A 7-month-old female Persian cat presented with gastrointestinal (GI) necrosis and perforation caused by Rhizomucor species. Unfortunately, the cat died of bacterial peritonitis and sepsis before a definitive diagnosis, based on histopathology and fungal culture, was achieved.

Practical Relevance: This appears to be the first reported case of GI disease caused by Rhizomucor species in a cat.

Silicone elastomer sling for rectal prolapse in cats.

This study reports 2 cases of recurrent rectal prolapse secondary to anal abnormality in cats. In both cases the anus was wide, leading to a rectal mucosal prolapse during defecation. A silicone elastomer sling was introduced around the anus, and the rectal prolapse was definitively resolved.

Radiation therapy for feline cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma using a hypofractionated protocol.

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the efficacy of a hypofractionated radiation protocol for feline facial squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Twenty-five histologically confirmed SCCs in 15 cats were treated with four fractions of 7.6-10Gy each, with 1 week intervals.

Catheter-induced urethral trauma in cats with urethral obstruction.

Fifteen cats were evaluated with urethral obstruction. Penile trauma by catheterization was the major indication for perineal urethrostomy. Ten cats had developed a urethral stricture and five had rupture of the urethra following medical management.

Clinical, cytological and histopathological evaluation of mammary masses in cats from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The vast majority of mammary tumors in cats are malignant with high metastatic and mortality rates. This study evaluated clinical, cytological and histopathological aspects of 20 cases of cat mammary masses deriving from the city of Rio de Janeiro. Data on history, macroscopic description, evidence of regional lymph node and distant metastases, clinical examination and treatment were collected.

Management of the traumatic oronasal fistula in the cat with a conical silastic prosthetic device.

Management of a traumatic oronasal fistula with a prosthetic device in an 8-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat is described. The animal had fallen from a height of three stories at the age of 1 year. The fall had resulted in a fracture of the hard palate and a split in the palatal mucosa.
