The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term benefits of sharp scalpel debridement of painful forefoot plantar callosities in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The null hypothesis: sharp scalpel debridement would offer no additional long-term advantage in terms of pain and function. The Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA) established the GRAPPA Composite Exercise (GRACE) to compare existing and emerging composite disease activity and responder measures. At the GRAPPA 2010 annual meeting, initial results from this project were presented, and voting on available measures took place. At the GRAPPA 2011 meeting, further comparisons of new and existing measures were made, along with an outline plan for further work.

Topical protoporphyrin (PpIX)-induced photodynamic therapy (PDT) relies on the penetration of the prodrug into the skin lesion and subsequent accumulation of the photosensitizer. Methyl aminolevulinate (MAL)-PDT is an established treatment for thinner and superficial non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) but for the treatment of the thicker nodular basal cell carcinoma (nBCC) enhanced penetration of the prodrug is required. This study employed a new higher pressure, oxygen pressure injection (OPI) device, at the time of Metvix® application with a view to enhancing the penetration of MAL into the tumors.

Objective: Our exploratory study of painful lesser metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) primarily aimed to compare the clinical, biomechanical, and plain radiography findings with magnetic resonance (MR) arthrography findings. Our secondary aim was to compare standard unenhanced MR with MR arthrography in imaging the lesser MTP joints in RA.

The MRI signal from the Achilles tendon has been used to quantify mechanical tendinopathy; however, conventional MRI is limited by the short T(2) of normal tendon. Background: Foot problems associated with Systemic Sclerosis (SSc)/Scleroderma have been reported to be both common and disabling. There are only limited data describing specifically, the mechanical changes occurring in the foot in SSc. A pilot project conducted in preparation for this trial confirmed the previous reports of foot related impairment and reduced foot function in people with SSc and demonstrated a link to mechanical etiologies.

Composite disease outcome measures have been used in rheumatology for some time, but a disease-specific composite measure for psoriatic arthritis (PsA) has not yet been validated. Currently, instruments developed for use in rheumatoid arthritis are employed in PsA and include the American College of Rheumatology response criteria (ACR20, 50, and 70) and the Disease Activity Score for 28 and 44 joints (DAS28 and DAS44); however, these instruments do not cover the full spectrum of psoriatic disease. A composite measure is one way of incorporating an assessment of all relevant clinical outcomes into one single measure.

We have explored two divinylbenzene cross-linked polystyrene supports for use in a solid-supported N-terminal peptide tagging strategy. Resin-bound tags designed to be cleaved in a single step at the N-terminus of peptides have been devised and explored as peptide N-terminal tagging reagents (constructs) for subsequent mass spectrometric analysis. While the brominated tagging approach shows promise, the use of these specific solid supports has drawbacks, in terms of tagging reaction scale, for real applications in proteomics.

Previous cadaveric studies have suggested that forefoot deformities at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) might result from the failure of the ligamentous system and displacement of the plantar plates.
