Does the anchorage form and depth influence the pull-out strength of screws from bone cement? An experimental study.

The pull-out strengths of cortical screws inserted into soft, unpolymerised Refobacin Palacos bone cement (procedure S) and into hardened polymerised cement into which a hole had been drilled and tapped (procedure P) were compared. Cortical screws 58 mm in length, outer diameter 4.5 mm and inner diameter 2.

Postextrasystolic U wave augmentation, a new marker of increased arrhythmic risk in patients without the long QT syndrome.

Objectives: We attempted to determine the correlation between the presence of postextrasystolic changes in the STU segment and a history of sustained ventricular arrhythmias.

Background: Postextrasystolic U wave augmentation (a marked increment in U wave amplitude after premature ventricular complexes [PVCs]) is an adverse prognostic sign in the "pause-dependent long QT syndrome." However, the prevalence of postextrasystolic changes in patients without the long QT syndrome is unknown.

Coming of age of prevention science. Comments on the 1994 National Institute of Mental Health-Institute of Medicine Prevention reports.

The impressive results of prevention research in the last decade should be seen as only an initial demonstration phase of a research agenda that will require sustained support at national, state, and local levels. Future research will need to address problems of long-term follow-up, attention to mediators of program effectiveness, resources to adequately administer programs, and current neglect of state and local prevention infrastructures. Research on factors to facilitate program adoption and dissemination should receive greater emphasis and should appear earlier in the prevention intervention research cycle.

Mode of onset of torsade de pointes in congenital long QT syndrome.

Objectives: We sought to describe the mode of onset of spontaneous torsade de pointes in the congenital long QT syndrome.

Background: Contemporary classifications of the long QT syndrome (LQTS) refer to the congenital LQTS as "adrenergic dependent" and to the acquired LQTS as "pause dependent." Overlap between these two categories has been recognized, and a subgroup of patients with "idiopathic pause-dependent torsade" has been described.

Telomerase activity in plant extracts.

Telomeres of most eucaryotes terminate in long stretches of short, guanine-rich repeats. Telomerase, a specialized enzyme with reverse transcriptase-like activity, has been shown to synthesize these repeats in many lower eucaryotes and several animal species. Although a sequence (TTTAGGG)n that matches the eucaryotic consensus sequence Tx(A)Gy is present in several plant species, the activity and expression patterns of plant telomerase have not been reported.

Current therapy for Crigler-Najjar syndrome type 1: report of a world registry.

This study represents a multicenter survey on the management of patients with Crigler-Najjar syndrome (CNS) type 1. The aim of the survey was to find guiding principles for physicians in the care of these patients. Fifty-seven patients were included.

Distribution of marker-Y chromosome containing cells in different tissues of a Turner mosaic patient with mixed gonadal dysgenesis.

We here describe a 12-year-old girl with numerous Turner stigmata and virilized external genitalia. Chromosome analysis of PHA stimulated lymphocytes using different banding techniques revealed a 45,X/46,X,+mar Turner mosaicism with the prominent marker present in about 90% of the blood cells. A PCR-based analysis using a set of 9 STS from different regions of the human Y chromosome indicated the presence of Y chromosomal material with a deletion breakpoint most likely within deletion interval 6.

Initiating requests during community-based vocational training by students with mental retardation and sensory impairments.

Students with mental retardation and deafness or deaf-blindness often need some type of communication system to communicate effectively with communication partners during community-based vocational training. However, students may need specific training to learn how to initiate requests for items or assistance, a skill identified as critical for job success. Students were taught to initiate requests using dual communication boards and gestures.

Identification of the receptor-binding regions of pb5 proteins of bacteriophages T5 and BF23.

The receptor-binding protein pb5(T5) of bacteriophage T5, when expressed from the oad gene cloned in pVK88 under the control of the phage T7 promoter/polymerase system, has been shown to bind to its FhuA receptor on the surface of E. coli, where it blocks FhuA for subsequent adsorption of T5 (Mondigler et al., FEMS Microbiol.

Intermittent stress in pigs: effects on behavior, pituitary-adrenocortical axis, growth, and gastric ulceration.

Ninety-six pigs, half females and half castrated males from 12 litters, were housed in 24 groups of four litter mates. From an age of 115 days half of the groups were subjected to chronic stress for 33 days consisting of a schedule of unpredictable, inescapable electroshocks, and half served as controls. Behavior and performance were measured on all animals in the group, hormone data on one female in each group, and data on ulceration on the castrates.

Unusual abdomino-alary, defensive stridulatory mechanism in the bushcricket Pantecphylus cerambycinus (Orthoptera, Tettigonioidea, Pseudophyllidae).

The bushcricket Pantecphylus cerambycinus has two types of stridulatory mechanisms and acoustical signals. The elytro-elytral mechanism typical for tettigonioid bushcrickets is used to produce a narrow-band calling song (peak frequency 15 kHz). An abdomino-alary mechanism is used for disturbance stridulation.

[Ovarian tumors in childhood].

Over 16 years 60 girls underwent surgery for ovarian disease. A total of 23 girls suffered from ovarian tumors, as was confirmed by surgery and histological examination in 18 cases. In five girls ultrasound, CT, and MRT examinations showed tumors, which later turned out to be ovarian cysts; in two cases a tumor was found despite the preoperative diagnosis of an ovarian cyst.

Compound osteosynthesis of pathological fractures of the proximal femoral shaft. Experimental studies on the biomechanical effects of additional intramedullary splinting.

The biomechanical stability of two compound osteosynthesis techniques with and without intramedullary splinting were compared in 20 paired cadaver femora. Group A was stabilised using a contoured 12-hole DC plate and polymethylmethacrylate cement. In group B an additional intramedullary semi-diameter osteosynthesis plate was inserted parallel to the outer plate and transfixed with the same screws.

An experimental study of tensile strength of six different suture techniques.

Tests were carried out on the strength of six different suture techniques used to join polyester lace ends, for example, in interscapulo-scapulocostal scapulopexy. The following sutures were used: four 5-cm rows of a continuous suture, four 2.5-cm rows of a continuous suture, two 5-cm rows of a continuous suture, 4 or 8 interrupted sutures, and 4 U-sutures.

Bone cement penetration of the acetabulum in total hip replacement. An experimental study.

Cones of cement passing through, or below, the acetabulum may be seen after total hip replacement and are due either to iatrogenic perforation of the wall or to substantial bony defects. An experimental study was undertaken to establish which structures might be affected by these cones. In 20 cadaveric specimens, the acetabula were divided into 4 quadrants and, after the cement was set, the structures within the pelvis were dissected.

Anatomo-experimental study for lace fixation of winged scapula in muscular dystrophy.

Winging of the scapula is one of the major features of the rare facio-scapulo-humeral muscular dystrophy. Several methods of retention and fixation of the scapulae have been published, but most have technical disadvantages or complications. A modified method of operative fixation of the scapula to the chest using three polyester laces is described with the results of cadaveric studies on the stability of this system.

Dissemination of genetic risk information to relatives in the fragile X syndrome: guidelines for genetic counselors.

Fragile X Syndrome, which affects 1 in 1,250 males, is the most common inherited condition causing mental retardation. Although carrier detection for the fragile X syndrome utilizing DNA has now been simplified, genetic counseling and the process of informing at-risk family members remains complex. The purpose of this paper is to offer practical guidelines to health professionals providing genetic counseling to fragile X families in order to facilitate the dissemination of genetic risk information to relatives.

Long-term evaluation of patients undergoing immediate mandibular reconstruction.

Background: Immediate reconstruction following segmental mandibulectomy is an accepted surgical technique. The benefits and patient selection criteria need to be established.

Patients And Methods: Forty-seven patients who underwent immediate reconstruction of the mandible were followed for up to 14 years.

Mutual inhibition of cobalamin and siderophore uptake systems suggests their competition for TonB function.

Vitamin B12 (CN-Cbl) and iron-siderophore complexes are transported into Escherichia coli in two energy-dependent steps. The first step is mediated by substrate-specific outer membrane transport proteins and the energy-coupling TonB protein complex, and the second step uses separate periplasmic permeases for transport across the cytoplasmic membrane. Genetic and biochemical evidence suggests that the TonB-dependent outer membrane transporters contact TonB directly, and thus they might compete for limiting amounts of functional TonB.

Photoperiodic exposure and time of day modulate the expression of arginine vasopressin mRNA and vasoactive intestinal peptide mRNA in the suprachiasmatic nuclei of Siberian hamsters.

In hamsters, changes in ambient photoperiod lead to alterations in the circadian rhythm of pineal melatonin secretion and subsequent changes in reproductive function. The present study examined whether photoperiod also alters 24-h rhythms in neuropeptide mRNA levels in the SCN of Siberian hamsters. In situ hybridization and quantitative autoradiography were used to assess messenger RNA levels for vasopressin (AVP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in the SCN of hamsters sacrificed at six times of day following exposure to long (16 h light/day) or short (10 h light/day) photoperiod for 2 weeks.

Overproduced and purified receptor binding protein pb5 of bacteriophage T5 binds to the T5 receptor protein FhuA.

A promotor-less oad gene of bacteriophage T5, encoding the receptor binding protein pb5, was cloned into pT7-3 under the control of phage T7 promoter phi 10. Induction with IPTG resulted in enhanced production of pb5. Upon fractionation of the producing cells, most of the overproduced pb5 was found in the membrane fraction, which was most likely due to aggregation of the protein.

Ipsilateral peroneus brevis tendon grafting in a complicated case of traumatic rupture of tibialis anterior tendon.

Ruptures of tibialis anterior tendon can be caused by open, closed, direct, or indirect trauma, as well as spontaneously. Sixty-three cases of tibialis anterior tendon ruptures have been reported in the international literature. The treatment of choice is the surgical end-to-end or side-to-side anastomosis after previous Z-lengthening.
