Harm reduction programs provide tools that enable people who use drugs to do so more safely in a nonstigmatizing environment without the goal of them necessarily seeking treatment or abstinence. Most harm reduction programs in the United States distribute sterile syringes and naloxone and safely dispose of used syringes and other drug use supplies. Many also provide drug checking services, and other safer use supplies.

The professional identity of scientists has historically been cultivated to value research over teaching, which can undermine initiatives that aim to reform science education. Course-Based Research Experiences (CRE) and the inclusive Research and Education Communities (iREC) are two successful and impactful reform efforts that integrate research and teaching. The genome sequences of thousands of bacteriophages have been determined and functions for many of the encoded genes have been assigned based on homology to characterized sequences. However, functions have not been assigned to more than two-thirds of the identified phage genes as they have no recognizable sequence features. Recent genome-wide overexpression screens have begun to identify bacteriophage genes that encode proteins that reduce or inhibit bacterial growth.

Introduction: Spontaneous splenic rupture is an extremely rare complication of infective endocarditis.

Case Report: We present a case of a 56-year-old immunocompetent female with porcine bioprosthetic mitral valve replacement, automated implanted cardioverter-defibrillator, and atrial fibrillation on apixaban who was found to have in-hospital atraumatic splenic rupture complicating infective endocarditis with The rupture was treated successfully by endovascular embolization. Usual treatment with six weeks of antibiotics provided durable cure without further complication, and no surgical intervention was needed for either the valve or spleen.

Direct coupling of benzotriazole to unsaturated substrates such as allenes represents an atom-efficient method for the construction of biologically and pharmaceutically interesting functional structures. In this work, the mechanism of the -selective Rh complex-catalyzed coupling of benzotriazoles to allenes was investigated in depth using a combination of experimental and theoretical techniques. Substrate coordination, inhibition, and catalyst deactivation was probed in reactions of the neutral and cationic catalyst precursors [Rh(μ-Cl)(DPEPhos)] and [Rh(DPEPhos)(MeOH)] with benzotriazole and allene, giving coordination, or coupling of the substrates.

Objectives: The prevalences of hypertension and depression in sub-Saharan Africa are substantial and rising, despite limited data on their sociodemographic and behavioral risk factors and their interactions. We undertook a cross-sectional study in 4 communities in the Upper East Region of Ghana to identify persons with hypertension and depression in the setting of a pilot intervention training local nurses and health volunteers to manage these conditions.

Methods: We quantified hypertension and depression prevalence across key sociodemographic factors (age, sex, occupation, education, religion, ethnicity, and community) and behavioral factors (tobacco use, alcohol use, and physical activity) and tested for association by multivariable logistic regression.

Study Question: How does ovarian stimulation (OS), which is used to mature multiple oocytes for ART procedures, impact the principal cellular compartments and transcriptome of the human endometrium in the periovulatory and mid-secretory phases?

Summary Answer: During the mid-secretory window of implantation, OS alters the abundance of endometrial immune cells, whereas during the periovulatory period, OS substantially changes the endometrial transcriptome and impacts both endometrial glandular and immune cells.

What Is Known Already: Pregnancies conceived in an OS cycle are at risk of complications reflective of abnormal placentation and placental function. OS can alter endometrial gene expression and immune cell populations.

Over the past decade, thousands of bacteriophage genomes have been sequenced and annotated. A striking observation from this work is that known structural features and functions cannot be assigned for >65% of the encoded proteins.
