New bis(phenolate)amine-supported neodymium borohydride complexes and their previously reported samarium analogues were tested as catalysts for the polymerisation of styrene and isoprene. Reaction of Na2O2N(L) (L = py, OMe, NMe2) with Nd(BH4)3(THF)3 afforded the borohydride complexes Nd(O2N(L))(BH4)(THF) (L = py (1-Nd), OMe (2-Nd), NMe2 (3-Nd)). Complex 1-Nd has shown a propensity to form phenolate-O-bridged dimer [Nd(μ-O2N(py))(BH4)]2 (1′-Nd) as previously observed with the samarium analogues Sm(O2N(L))(BH4)(THF) (L = py or Pr).

This work describes the synthesis of three key intermediates of Noyori-type catalytic systems that are active precatalysts for the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone. Isolation of the cationic chloro(dihydrogen) complex [RuCl(H(2))(H(2)NNPP)(PCy(3))][BArf(4)] provides a facile synthetic route to the corresponding cationic and neutral hydrido complexes, and the series highlights the links between hydride/dihydrogen and amine/amido ligands in neutral and cationic species.

Dicationic, zwitterionic and "conventional" yttrium compounds act as catalysts for the primary or secondary amine-initiated immortal ROP of rac-lactide; amine-terminated, highly heterotactic poly(rac-lactides) with narrow polydispersities and well-controlled molecular weights are prepared in this manner.

The reaction of Sm{N(SiMe3)2}3 with the bis(phenol)amines H2O2N(R) (H2O2N(R) = RCH2CH2N(2-HO-3,5-C6H2(t)Bu2)2; R = OMe, NMe2 or Me) gave exclusively zwitterions Sm(O2N(R))(HO2N(R)). For R = OMe or NMe2 these were efficient catalysts for the ring-opening polymerisation of epsilon-caprolactone and D,L-lactide with a tendency to form cyclic esters; in contrast, no polymerisation was observed for R = Me.
