Background: Concepts such as patient-centred care, patient empowerment and patient participation have challenged our understanding of what it means to be a patient and what role patients play in care pathways. Consequently, patientology as the medical sociological and anthropological study of patients is currently being reconceptualized through perspectives of health as individualized and privatized capital.

Aims: This article explores the potential of such a patientological perspective to enhance our understanding of and tailor care pathways.

Several studies indicate that a biochemically reduced response to aspirin increases the risk of cardiovascular events. This study was designed to investigate the performance of Multiplate whole blood aggregometry as regards assessment of platelet function prior to and after aspirin treatment, and to compare it with light transmission aggregometry (LTA). We included 21 healthy individuals and 43 patients with documented coronary artery disease (CAD).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the reliability of the PFA-100 platelet function test compared to optical platelet aggregometry (OPA) for assessing aspirin response in healthy individuals and coronary artery disease (CAD) patients.
  • It finds that aspirin treatment increases variability in test results for both methods, making them less consistent.
  • The research concludes that neither method effectively identifies the same low-responders to aspirin, suggesting caution when using these tests for monitoring treatment.

Introduction: Patients with inadequate platelet inhibition by aspirin, referred to as aspirin resistance, might have an increased risk of suffering cardiovascular events. Therefore, identification of these patients by measuring platelet function is of great interest. Our objectives were to evaluate performance parameters of VerifyNow and to determine the agreement between VerifyNow and light transmission aggregometry (LTA) ad modum Born.
